phpMyAdmin does not set the upload ceiling itself. PHP does. To import a larger SQL dump, raise upload_max_filesize and set post_max_size to a still larger value in the PHP configuration used by the web server, then allow enough input, execution and memory time for the import. Restart the relevant PHP service or web server before testing.

What actually limits a phpMyAdmin import?
The import form is served by phpMyAdmin, but the file is received and processed by PHP. The effective ceiling therefore comes from PHP directives rather than from a separate phpMyAdmin limit documented in the versions reviewed. A stock PHP installation may reject a dump after only a few megabytes because the PHP manual lists these defaults:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Directive | PHP manual default | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
upload_max_filesize |
2M | The largest individual uploaded file PHP accepts. |
post_max_size |
8M | The maximum size of the complete HTTP POST body, including the uploaded file and form data. |
Those are version-dependent defaults, not a guarantee for every PHP release or hosting configuration. The smaller effective value wins. For a dump to reach phpMyAdmin, both limits must be above the dump size, and post_max_size must be strictly larger than upload_max_filesize.
A file can also fail after passing the byte limit. PHP’s max_input_time covers the time spent receiving request data, including an upload; its documented default is 60 seconds. max_execution_time governs time available for PHP processing, while memory_limit constrains memory available during the request. phpMyAdmin’s guidance tells administrators to check all of these settings when a large dump cannot be uploaded.

Set the limits in the right order
Decide the largest dump you need to import, then configure every relevant limit around that requirement. For example, a 100 MB file cannot be accepted when either upload limit is 64 MB, regardless of the other settings. The exact values depend on your server’s capacity and the dump you intend to process.
upload_max_filesize: larger than the biggest individual dump.post_max_size: larger thanupload_max_filesize, not equal to it. It must also exceed the dump plus the rest of the POST request.max_input_time: long enough for the slowest expected connection to transmit the file.max_execution_time: long enough for PHP and phpMyAdmin to parse and submit the dump.memory_limit: high enough for the PHP request and import workload without exhausting the server.
Raising only upload_max_filesize is a common mistake. If post_max_size remains lower, PHP still discards an oversized request before phpMyAdmin can use it.
Step-by-step: increase the phpMyAdmin upload limit
1. Identify the PHP configuration serving phpMyAdmin
PHP settings are PHP_INI_PERDIR directives. They can be defined in php.ini, an Apache configuration or .htaccess where that handler permits it, and other server configuration locations. The effective file depends on whether the site uses Apache’s PHP module, PHP-FPM, CGI or another handler.
On a server where you have shell access, run php -i and locate the line identifying the loaded configuration file. Treat this as a starting point: a command-line PHP process can use a different configuration from the web PHP process that serves phpMyAdmin. If the values you edit do not appear to take effect, verify the configuration for the web handler rather than assuming the CLI file is authoritative.
On managed hosting, the provider may expose PHP settings in a site control panel instead of giving you access to the underlying file. Use the panel’s PHP configuration for the same directives, or ask the host which configuration scope applies to the phpMyAdmin installation.

2. Edit the five relevant directives
Open the PHP configuration used by the web request and set values appropriate for the dump. This is an illustrative configuration, not a universal recommendation:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →upload_max_filesize = 128M
post_max_size = 140M
max_input_time = 600
max_execution_time = 600
memory_limit = 512M
The important relationship in this example is that 140M is greater than 128M. Replace the numbers with limits your server can safely handle and that exceed the largest dump you plan to import. PHP size values use a number with a unit such as M; retain the syntax accepted by your PHP version and hosting interface.
Do not set values merely to make the upload form accept a file. A large request can consume CPU, memory and worker time, and an import that exceeds available resources can still fail or affect other applications.
3. Save the configuration and restart the serving process
Restart the PHP service, PHP-FPM pool or web server as required by your handler. The exact command and whether a restart is needed vary by deployment, so use the service procedure for that server. A configuration edit that has not been loaded by the web process cannot change phpMyAdmin’s limit.
If a hosting panel manages PHP, applying or saving the new profile may perform this reload automatically. Do not assume that editing a file on disk changed a separate PHP-FPM pool or a container used by the web site.

4. Verify the web-facing values
Return to phpMyAdmin’s Import page and try the dump again. A common tutorial-based check is to look for a changed “Maximum size” note on that page after the PHP settings have been reloaded. That display is a practical indication, not a behavior confirmed in the official phpMyAdmin documentation reviewed here.
For a reliable check, confirm the values exposed to the web PHP handler, not only the output of command-line php -i. If the Import page still reports the old ceiling, the usual causes are an un-restarted process, an edited configuration that the web handler does not read, or a hosting policy that overrides the value.
Choosing values for a real dump
Use the largest file you will actually import as the starting point. The following table shows the relationship, using illustrative targets rather than mandatory settings:
| Requirement | Example setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Largest dump to upload | 100M | The file must fit below both upload-related directives. |
upload_max_filesize |
128M | Leaves room above a 100M file. |
post_max_size |
140M | Exceeds the upload limit and the complete POST body. |
max_input_time |
600 seconds | Allows more than the 60-second PHP default for a slow upload. |
max_execution_time |
600 seconds | Allows PHP processing time after receipt. |
memory_limit |
512M | Provides a larger PHP memory ceiling, subject to the server’s actual capacity. |
The values are not a guarantee that a 100M dump will import successfully. SQL complexity, database-side limits, available RAM, CPU, connection timeouts and phpMyAdmin’s processing path can still affect completion. The table’s purpose is to show the ordering and headroom, not to prescribe a universal profile.

When post_max_size is exceeded, PHP empties $_POST and $_FILES. The request therefore may not produce the normal upload error code that a user expects. In phpMyAdmin, this can look like an empty form, a missing file or a generic import failure rather than a clear “file too large” message.

This behavior explains why increasing only the visible upload setting often appears ineffective. The request can be removed at the POST-size boundary before phpMyAdmin receives a usable file. Set post_max_size above upload_max_filesize, reload PHP, and test again.
Troubleshoot a limit that still has not changed
The Import page still shows the old maximum
- Check that the edited file belongs to the PHP web handler serving phpMyAdmin.
- Reload or restart PHP-FPM, the PHP module or the web server as appropriate.
- Check whether a site, virtual-host or hosting-panel setting overrides the global value.
- Confirm that the values are valid for the PHP version and configuration interface.
The file is accepted but the import times out
A size increase does not extend the time available to receive or process a request. Raise max_input_time when transmission itself is slow, and review max_execution_time when PHP receives the file but cannot finish processing it. The 60-second max_input_time default is particularly easy to hit on a large file or slow connection.
The upload starts but PHP runs out of memory
Review memory_limit and the server’s available RAM. Increasing the directive consumes a larger possible share of memory; do not raise it without considering other sites and PHP workers on the same host. A dump that fits the byte limits can still exceed the memory available to the request.

The settings look correct from the shell but not in phpMyAdmin
Compare the command-line configuration with the web handler’s configuration. PHP can load different settings for different handlers, pools or sites. A successful php -i check alone does not prove that the browser request uses those same values.
Use a server-side upload directory when browser upload is impractical
phpMyAdmin’s import documentation describes an upload directory configured with $cfg['UploadDir']. Place the dump on the server in that directory, then select it from the Import page instead of transmitting the file through the browser request. This route is useful when the file is already on the server or when the browser connection is too slow or unreliable.
Best Value
The documented import workflow also covers compressed uploads in gzip, ZIP and bzip2 formats, as well as drag-and-drop. Compression can reduce transfer time and storage requirements, but the resulting import still needs sufficient processing time and memory.
Protect an upload directory carefully. It should be accessible to the phpMyAdmin process as required, but it should not become a general-purpose public download location. Remove temporary dumps when the import is complete and apply the permissions appropriate to your server.
Import the dump with the MySQL client instead
If the web route cannot be enlarged, move the file to the database server with a controlled transfer such as SCP or FTP, then run it through the MySQL client’s SQL source command. This bypasses the browser upload and its PHP POST limits.
source /path/to/dump.sql;
The path must be readable from the client session, and the account must have the privileges required by the statements in the dump. This method does not remove database-server constraints or client connection issues; it changes only the file-transfer path that was failing in phpMyAdmin.
Security and scope considerations
Large PHP limits increase the amount of data a request can submit and the resources a request can consume. The PHP common-pitfalls guidance warns that setting very large limits for an entire server or virtual host can increase security risk. Where possible, scope the change to the particular site, directory or PHP pool that needs the import rather than raising limits for unrelated applications.
- Raise limits only as far as the largest required dump and a reasonable margin.
- Keep
post_max_sizeaboveupload_max_filesize, but avoid indiscriminately setting both to huge values. - Restore lower production values after a one-time migration if the larger window is no longer needed.
- Protect phpMyAdmin, the upload directory and database credentials with the access controls appropriate to your environment.
- Monitor memory and worker usage when testing a large import on a shared server.
Which method should you choose?
| Situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You administer the PHP configuration and need recurring browser imports | Raise the PHP directives and reload the serving process | It addresses the root upload and processing limits for phpMyAdmin. |
| The dump is already on the server | Use $cfg['UploadDir'] |
The file can be selected locally without another browser upload. |
| The connection is slow or the hosting provider will not raise limits | Transfer the file to the server and use the MySQL client’s source command |
The database client avoids the PHP HTTP upload boundary. |
| You need a compressed transfer | Use a supported gzip, ZIP or bzip2 upload | phpMyAdmin’s documented import workflow supports these formats. |
Key points to remember
The phpMyAdmin import limit is normally a PHP configuration problem. Set upload_max_filesize above the largest dump, set post_max_size higher still, allow enough max_input_time and max_execution_time, and provide adequate memory_limit. Apply the settings to the PHP handler that serves phpMyAdmin and reload that process. If you cannot safely change them, use the server-side upload directory or import through the MySQL client instead of forcing a larger browser request.
