More traffic alone is not a sales strategy if those visitors are unlikely to buy or the store makes purchasing difficult.
Use the 20 strategies below as a menu, not a checklist. Choose actions that fit your products, customers, budget, and business stage; measure them against your own baseline; and keep, revise, or stop them based on what happens.

Attract visitors who are likely to buy
Start with audience fit. A channel can bring visitors without bringing customers, so prioritize the places and questions relevant to people who might actually need your product.

2. Make product and category pages easy to discover
Use language shoppers would naturally use in page titles, descriptions, and useful on-page content. Organize the site so people and search engines can understand how categories and products relate. Shopify’s marketing-plan guidance recommends choosing tactics around customers and business goals; its SEO overview and Google’s ecommerce search guidance cover discoverability and site structure.
3. Give search engines accurate product information
Review Google’s ecommerce documentation for product data and structured data options. Add markup only when it accurately describes information visible on the page, such as the product and its attributes. Structured data can help search engines interpret a page; it does not guarantee a particular search display or ranking.
4. Publish content that answers shopping questions
Create useful written or visual explanations of product use, differences between options, and problems the product addresses. Link the content to the relevant product or category page so readers can take the next step. Prioritize questions customers actually ask instead of producing content solely to fill a publishing calendar.
5. Choose social channels for audience fit
Find out where likely customers spend time and which formats suit your product. Choose a publishing rhythm you can sustain, and respond to relevant comments and messages. A smaller, engaged audience may be more valuable than reach that does not lead to qualified visits.
6. Work with creators, influencers, or affiliates selectively
Look for a clear fit between the collaborator’s audience, your product, and your brand. Set expectations about the content, timing, and how results will be assessed. Evaluate qualified traffic and sales rather than relying on follower counts or views alone.

7. Test paid search or social campaigns with a defined budget
Before spending, specify the audience, campaign goal, and amount you can afford to test. Compare resulting sales and customer acquisition cost with other ways of reaching customers. Avoid treating ad spend as proof of demand: a campaign is useful only if its outcomes make sense for your business.
Make it easier for visitors to buy
When people reach the store but hesitate, look for uncertainty or friction in the shopping journey. Test the full path from landing page through checkout, not just the home page.
8. Simplify navigation and check the mobile journey
Use clear menus and consistent page layouts. On a phone as well as a larger screen, check that shoppers can find a product, understand its options, add it to the cart, and complete checkout. Fix confusing labels, hard-to-use controls, and steps that interrupt that path.
9. Use product images to answer practical questions
Choose clear images that show the product and details customers need to evaluate it. Depending on the item, that may mean showing scale, materials, features, or how it is used. Images should clarify the offer rather than merely decorate the page.
10. Write scannable, specific product descriptions
Explain what the item is, how it is used, and which attributes matter to a buyer. Put decision-relevant details where readers can find them quickly, and avoid vague claims that could describe any product in the category.

11. Collect and display useful customer reviews
Reviews and user-generated content can help prospective buyers assess an item. Present them accurately and transparently; do not alter their meaning or imply that a review represents every customer’s experience. Make it easy to find feedback relevant to the product being considered.

12. Show shipping costs and return terms before checkout
Make delivery costs, timing information where available, and return terms visible before a shopper commits to an order. Late surprises can create uncertainty at the point of purchase. Shopify’s marketing-plan guidance specifically recommends cost transparency and a clear return policy as ways to reduce checkout uncertainty.
13. Make business and support information easy to find
Maintain an About page, clear contact details, and a practical route to support. Live chat may suit some stores, but a reliable contact method matters more than adding a feature customers cannot use effectively. Answer common questions where shoppers encounter them.
14. Review site speed and web performance
Use performance reports to identify slow pages or interactions, then prioritize changes that help shoppers without removing useful functionality. Shopify’s web-performance guidance notes that store features can affect performance and that performance has implications for the shopping experience, conversion, and discoverability. Recheck the experience after adding apps, media, or other features.
15. Improve on-site search and recommendations
Review what visitors search for and whether the results help them find relevant products. Consider complementary product recommendations when they assist a decision, such as showing a compatible accessory. Recommendations that distract or surface irrelevant items can make shopping harder.

16. Test bundles, cross-sells, and upsells for relevance
Offer complementary items, quantities, or upgrades only when they plausibly help the customer. Compare average order value alongside conversion rate: a larger basket is not necessarily an improvement if fewer visitors complete a purchase or the offer erodes margin.
17. Use promotions for a specific purpose
Set a goal for a discount or sale, such as moving a particular product or encouraging a first purchase, and decide how you will assess it. Consider the effect on margin and later buying behavior, not just the number of orders during the promotion. Frequent, unplanned discounts can make full-price value harder to establish.
18. Try live selling or product demonstrations if the audience uses them
A live event or demonstration can let shoppers see a product in context and ask questions. Treat the format as a channel experiment: assess attendance, qualified visits, and resulting sales against the time and operational effort required. Amazon’s seller guidance includes live selling among its suggested ecommerce tactics; that does not make it suitable for every audience.

How to prioritize the 20 strategies
Shopify’s 2026 ecommerce marketing guide describes traffic, conversion, and retention as connected parts of ecommerce marketing and recommends matching key performance indicators to business stage. Use your own store data to find the most consequential bottleneck before selecting tactics.
- Set a baseline. Record available measures such as traffic sources, conversion rate, average order value, acquisition cost, cart abandonment, and repeat-customer activity. A new store may first need dependable baselines; a store that is scaling may need to understand channel economics.
- Identify the bottleneck. Decide whether the main issue is too few qualified visitors, uncertainty on product pages, checkout abandonment, or weak repeat purchasing. Use observed behavior rather than assuming the most visible problem is the biggest one.
- Choose a small number of relevant changes. State what each change is intended to improve and what observable result would support keeping it. Compare options by audience fit, business goal, cost and capacity, measurement quality, and likely effect on customer experience.
- Change one major variable at a time where practical. Allow enough data to accumulate to make a meaningful comparison with the baseline. There is no universal test duration or sample-size rule established for every store and tactic.
- Keep, revise, or stop the tactic. Assess results alongside business constraints, including margin, operating effort, and ability to fulfill demand. Revisit the plan when products, customers, or the business change.
Use the metric closest to the problem being addressed. For example, evaluate a discovery effort by qualified traffic and resulting purchases, a checkout change by completion behavior, and a retention effort by returning-customer activity. A single metric rarely tells the whole story: pair sales measures with relevant costs and customer experience.
The 20 strategies are hypotheses to test, not guaranteed sales lifts. The reviewed merchant guidance does not establish a universal increase attributable to any one tactic; performance depends on the store, audience, offer, and execution.
