The fastest, lowest-risk Bedrock performance improvement is to reduce the distances the server must maintain. In server.properties, keep tick-distance lower than view-distance, then restart the server and watch TPS while you adjust. View distance primarily increases chunk memory and network work; tick distance expands the area where mobs, crops, and redstone are simulated, so it is chiefly a CPU load.

What actually causes Bedrock server lag?
A Bedrock Dedicated Server has to do two different jobs for each player. It loads and sends chunks that the player can see, and it actively simulates a smaller or larger area around that player. Those jobs are controlled mainly by view-distance and tick-distance.

When either value is higher, the server has more work to perform. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server Properties reference explicitly warns that higher values have a performance impact for both settings. The practical goal is not to use the largest possible numbers; it is to provide the visual range players need while keeping the actively simulated area small enough for the available CPU.
View distance and tick distance: the settings that matter most
view-distance: visual range, memory, and network load
view-distance is the maximum view distance in chunks that the server allows. As it rises, the server may need to keep more chunks available and send more chunk data to connected players. That makes memory use and network traffic the main concerns. A high value can be especially expensive when several players are exploring different areas at the same time.

tick-distance: active simulation and CPU load
tick-distance controls how many chunks away from each player the world is ticked. Mobs, crops, and redstone machines in that active area require repeated calculations, so increasing this value primarily increases CPU work. It is the setting to reduce first when farms, villagers, redstone, or many players cause delayed actions even though players can still see distant terrain.
Official defaults and limits
| Property | Official default | Allowed values | Main pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
tick-distance |
4 chunks | Integer from 4 through 12 | CPU, because more chunks are actively simulated |
view-distance |
32 chunks | Positive integer of 5 or greater | Memory and network, because more chunks can be loaded and sent |
The defaults and limits above come from Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server Properties reference. The Minecraft Wiki lists the same default and range for these two Bedrock properties. The official documentation specifies limits, not a recommended value for every server.

Set safer distances in server.properties
Changing the properties file is the most direct way to reduce load. Make the change while the server is stopped, and keep a copy of the original file so you can undo it.
- Back up the server. Stop the Bedrock server and copy the world folder and
server.propertiesto a separate location. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if a value is mistyped or the result is worse. - Open the properties file. In the server’s installation directory, open
server.propertieswith a plain-text editor. Do not add quotation marks around values. - Find the two distance keys. Locate
view-distance=andtick-distance=. If a key appears more than once, keep one authoritative entry rather than leaving conflicting duplicates. - Choose a conservative pair. Set tick distance below view distance. For example, a normal survival server can test
tick-distance=6andview-distance=10, a pair suggested by a hosting guide. These are tuning suggestions, not official Bedrock requirements. - Save the file and start the server. A hosting source reports that a reload may not apply these properties correctly, so use a complete stop and start instead of relying on an in-game reload.
- Observe before changing again. Let players perform their usual activities, check the server’s TPS indicator or host console, and change one setting at a time. A single change makes it easier to identify what helped.
Never set a value outside the documented range. In particular, tick distance cannot be reduced below 4 through this property, while view distance must be at least 5.

How to choose starting values
Small private or lightly populated worlds
If only a few players are online and the server has spare CPU, memory, and bandwidth, you can test a larger view distance while leaving tick distance modest. The important constraint is still the relationship between the values: tick distance should remain lower than view distance so the server does not simulate every chunk it makes visible.
Ordinary survival servers
A secondary guide suggests starting around tick distance 6 and view distance 10 for a normal survival server, then adjusting according to TPS. Treat that as a starting experiment rather than a specification. Player count, exploration patterns, farms, and the host machine can all change the result.

Another 2026 hosting guide suggests view distance around 6 to 8 for general play and 4 to 6 for very large servers. That guide also calls 10 a default, which conflicts with the official Bedrock default of 32. Use the official value and range as the authoritative specification; use the lower figures only as conservative, third-party tuning examples.
Why there is no universal “best” number
Distance settings multiply the work created by connected players. Two players standing close together may share much of the loaded area, while players spread across the world can make the server maintain separate regions. A busy mob farm or redstone district can also be more expensive than quiet terrain. For that reason, a value that is smooth for one world can produce lag in another, even on similar hardware.

Use TPS to tune instead of guessing
TPS, or ticks per second, is the useful feedback signal when changing server performance settings. Use the TPS display supplied by your host or server management panel, or another monitoring method already available in your setup. Record the value during normal play, during exploration, and when the busiest farms or redstone areas are operating.
- Reduce tick distance first when actions are delayed around active farms, mobs, crops, or redstone. This directly shrinks the simulated area and therefore CPU work.
- Reduce view distance when memory pressure, chunk transmission, or bandwidth is the problem, or when players are exploring in many directions at once.
- Change one property per test. If both values change simultaneously, you cannot tell which change fixed or worsened the issue.
- Test at the busiest time. A setting that looks fine with one player may fail when the normal player count, farms, and exploration load are present.
- Keep a short tuning log. Note the date, player count, property values, and observed TPS. This prevents repeatedly returning to a setting that already failed.
There is no published benchmark in the available Bedrock documentation that converts a particular player count or hardware specification into a guaranteed TPS result. Treat measurements from your own world as more useful than a universal number from a hosting blog.

Reduce entity and redstone load
Distance settings are not the only source of lag. A secondary performance guide warns that too many entities can overload a server, including mobs, dropped items, armor stands, and redstone contraptions. These loads are often concentrated in bases and farms, so a server can lag even when the global view distance is modest.
Mobs
- Remove unused animal and hostile-mob pens instead of allowing them to grow indefinitely.
- Combine or relocate farms that create large numbers of mobs in the same active area.
- Check whether several players are keeping separate high-density farms loaded at once.
Dropped items
- Collect or dispose of items left on the ground after mining, harvesting, or automated farms.
- Repair collection systems so items do not accumulate beside a full chest, blocked hopper, or broken transport line.
Armor stands and other persistent objects
- Remove decorative entities that no longer serve a purpose, especially in heavily loaded hubs.
- Audit old builds after a world has been migrated or reset; abandoned areas can retain unnecessary entities.
Redstone machines
- Turn off clocks, item sorters, and farms when they are not needed.
- Replace continuously running circuits with switches or timed operating periods where practical.
- Spread expensive machines out rather than placing many active contraptions in one player base.
These are management changes rather than new server properties. They reduce the amount of work performed inside the chunks that players are already keeping active.

Keep visual range larger than active simulation
Setting tick distance below view distance is a common compromise: players can see farther terrain while the server actively processes a smaller radius. The distinction matters because visible terrain does not need the same continuous simulation as the area where players expect crops, mobs, and redstone to operate.
Do not promise players that every farm will function at the edge of the visible horizon. A farm outside the active tick area may be visible but not receive the same ongoing simulation. Explain that behavior to players before they interpret it as a broken machine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bandwidth and entity broadcast: handle with caution
One secondary source discusses an entity-broadcast-range-percentage option as a way to influence bandwidth. The available material does not establish a Bedrock-specific default or valid range for this key. Third-party references conflict: one lists a default of 100 and a range of 10 to 1000, while another gives 0 to 500 for a general, non-Bedrock guide.
Because Microsoft’s Bedrock reference does not confirm the key’s Bedrock behavior in the available documentation, do not add it to a production configuration based on those conflicting figures. First verify the property against the exact Bedrock Dedicated Server version you run. If it is not documented for that version, leave it unchanged and use the documented distance settings and entity cleanup instead.
Best Value
Do not rely on unverified live gamerule commands
Some guides list commands such as /gamerule viewDistance or /gamerule simulationDistance for changing distance settings while the server is running. Those commands could not be confirmed in the official Bedrock documentation used for this guide. The documented method is to edit the corresponding properties, stop the server, and start it again.
Bedrock’s tick-distance is often compared with Java Edition’s simulation-distance. That correspondence comes from secondary guides and is useful when translating concepts, but the property names, defaults, and limits in this article are for Bedrock Dedicated Server.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Players see delayed block actions or redstone
- Check TPS during the delay.
- Inspect nearby farms, mob areas, dropped items, and continuously running redstone.
- Reduce
tick-distancewithin its documented range, restart fully, and test again. - If the problem is concentrated in one base, reduce its entity and machine load before lowering the setting for the entire server again.
Chunks load slowly while players explore
- Check whether several players are travelling in different directions at once.
- Lower
view-distanceand restart, because this reduces the amount of chunk data the server must maintain and send. - Keep tick distance lower than the new view distance so exploration does not also expand the active simulation area unnecessarily.
Lag appears only when many players join
- Reproduce the issue at the normal peak player count rather than with an empty server.
- Test a lower view distance first if chunk loading and network traffic are the visible symptoms.
- Test a lower tick distance first if farms, mobs, or redstone stop responding promptly.
- Audit entities in shared hubs and bases; a single overloaded location can affect everyone who enters it.
Changes appear to have no effect
- Confirm that the server was stopped before the file was edited.
- Check spelling and punctuation in both property names.
- Make sure the file was saved in the active server directory rather than a backup or local copy.
- Perform a complete stop and start. A reload is reported by one source as insufficient for applying these settings reliably.
- Verify the running values in the server console or management panel if your host exposes them.
When hardware is the bottleneck
No physical product is required to apply these fixes: the primary remedies are configuration, monitoring, and entity management. More CPU or memory can help when the server remains overloaded at the lowest practical settings, but the available specifications do not identify a particular processor, RAM amount, or upgrade threshold. Do not treat a hardware upgrade as a substitute for an uncontrolled tick distance, an excessive entity count, or permanently running redstone.
Before changing hardware, capture the conditions that cause the problem: player count, distance values, TPS, and the area or activity involved. That record tells you whether the remaining pressure is CPU-heavy simulation, memory and chunk retention, or network delivery.
Recommended tuning checklist
- Back up the world and properties file.
- Start from the official limits: tick distance 4–12 and view distance 5 or higher.
- Keep
tick-distancebelowview-distance. - For an initial survival test, consider the secondary-guide pair
tick-distance=6andview-distance=10. - Use lower view-distance suggestions for large populations only as experiments, not as official defaults.
- Stop and restart after editing; do not assume a reload applied the values.
- Measure TPS during normal and peak activity.
- Reduce mobs, dropped items, armor stands, and always-on redstone in busy areas.
- Do not use an unverified entity-broadcast range or gamerule command in production.
- Change one setting at a time and record the result.
The performance strategy in one sentence
Give players the visual range they need, simulate a smaller area than you display, remove unnecessary entities and machines, and use TPS observations after a full restart to decide whether the next change should target CPU-heavy tick distance or memory-and-network-heavy view distance.
