Give every SERP screenshot a clear evidence label, the query it captures, and the context needed to interpret it. Then link the original image from the audit finding and pair it with an observation and a concrete recommendation. Keep SERP captures separate from Google Search Console URL Inspection screenshots: one shows search results; the other shows Google’s rendered view of a site page during a successful live test.
What a SERP screenshot should prove
A search engine results page (SERP) screenshot documents what appeared for a particular query in a particular capture context. Use it to support findings about visible search results or features—for example, what appeared for the query, or how a result was displayed. It records what was visible at that time; it does not establish that every searcher sees the same results.

Start with one finding and one evidence purpose. Record the exact query, the relevant result or target URL, and the observation date. Describe what the image shows rather than treating the screenshot alone as proof of a broader technical or ranking claim.
What to put next to each screenshot
Include enough context for another person to understand and revisit the evidence. Google identifies language, country, and location as factors that can affect search relevance (Google’s guide to ranking systems). Record location details when they matter to the finding; do not present a local or language-specific SERP as universal.
#1 Best Overall
| Spreadsheet field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Finding ID | A stable identifier shared by the audit row, any ticket or notes, and the evidence filename. |
| Query / URL | For a SERP capture, the exact search query and relevant result or target URL. For URL Inspection, the full affected page URL. |
| Evidence type | Name the source precisely, such as “SERP capture” or “URL Inspection live screenshot.” |
| Capture context | Date and time with timezone, language, country or location when relevant, device or viewport, and browser where relevant. |
| Observation | A concise description of what the image visibly demonstrates. |
| Recommendation | The action that addresses the finding, stated separately from the observation. |
| Priority / status / owner | Your team’s fields for triage and follow-up. |
| Evidence link | A stable link or filename for the original full-resolution image and, where useful, supporting data. |
This is a practical structure, not a required standard. Search Engine Journal’s audit workbook example separates recommendations and raw data, includes Notes & Links, and describes linking recommendations to relevant data pages (Search Engine Journal’s SEO audit template).
Capture and link SERP evidence
- Define the finding. State whether you are documenting a search result, a page-rendering or access issue, or another visible behavior. Identify the query or URL and the observation date.
- Capture the actual SERP for a SERP finding. Use a full-page capture if the finding depends on the whole results layout. A viewport capture may be enough when one visible result or feature is the subject. Preserve the original image; do not crop away context that could change its interpretation.
- Save the original in a controlled location. Use a stable evidence folder or a separate spreadsheet tab for full-resolution files. Give files names that include the finding ID and enough identifying detail to connect them to the row.
- Link the image from the finding row. Keep the main sheet focused on the finding, recommendation, and evidence reference rather than embedding large images in every row. Ensure the link remains accessible to the audit team.
- Connect evidence to an action. Identify the affected query or URL, describe the observed state, state the expected state, give a recommendation, and link the evidence. For technical page findings, Google’s guidance includes checking page access, HTTP response status, and indexable content (Google Search Essentials SEO Starter Guide).
Keep SERP captures distinct from URL Inspection screenshots
These images answer different questions. A SERP screenshot shows the search results page for a query. A Google Search Console URL Inspection screenshot shows Google’s rendered view of a site page retrieved during a successful live test. Label them as different evidence types rather than placing both under a generic “Google screenshot” label.

| Evidence type | Question it helps answer | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| SERP capture | What was visible in search results for this query and capture context? | It documents one moment and context; search relevance can vary with factors such as language, country, and location. |
| URL Inspection live screenshot | What did Google retrieve and render for this page during a successful live test? | It is not a SERP image, is only available for a successful live test, and does not reproduce all indexed data or test every indexing condition. |
How to get the URL Inspection screenshot
- In Search Console, inspect the affected page URL.
- Run Test live URL.
- For a successful live test, open View tested page and select the Screenshot tab if available.
- Label and link the image as a URL Inspection live screenshot, not a SERP capture.
Google’s URL Inspection tool distinguishes indexed information from a live test of the current page. The indexed view reflects Google’s systems as of its most recent recrawl and indexing; the live test fetches and evaluates the current page and is less comprehensive in some respects. Google also states: “The live test does not check for the presence of the URL in any sitemaps or any referring pages.” Screenshots are unavailable for indexed URL views and unsuccessful live fetches (Google Search Console Help: URL Inspection tool). A positive inspection status does not guarantee that a URL appears in search results.

Choose capture scope and preserve context
Use a viewport capture when
- The finding concerns one visible result or feature.
- The relevant evidence fits in the captured viewport and the omitted page content is not material.
Use a full-page capture when
- The finding depends on the overall results layout or content outside the initial viewport.
- You need to show how visible features relate to the rest of the page.
Whichever scope you choose, retain the original and record the capture context. Cropping may help present a detail separately, but keep the unaltered original linked as the evidence source and do not remove context material to the finding.

Or skip the browser setup
For an API-based screenshot of a public page, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request capture. This captures a website page, not a query-specific SERP; use a method that can produce the actual search results page for SERP evidence. The ScreenshotNeo API accepts URLs and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and fixes
- The screenshot is labeled only “Google screenshot.” Replace the vague label with “SERP capture” or “URL Inspection live screenshot” so readers know what it shows.
- A later reviewer cannot reproduce or interpret the SERP. Add the exact query and the relevant capture time, language, country or location, device or viewport, and browser details.
- The image link breaks or the sheet becomes unwieldy. Store original full-resolution files in a controlled evidence location or separate tab, use stable filenames, and link from the finding row.
- The URL Inspection screenshot is missing. Confirm that you ran a live test and that it succeeded; indexed views and unsuccessful live fetches do not provide the screenshot.
- A screenshot is used to claim more than it shows. Limit the observation to what is visible in that capture. For URL Inspection, distinguish the current live test from indexed information and from search-result appearance.
Frequently asked questions
Should I embed screenshots directly in the spreadsheet?
You can, but linking to originals in a controlled evidence folder or separate tab usually keeps the finding sheet easier to scan while preserving full-resolution files.

Is a Search Console screenshot the same as a SERP screenshot?
No. A URL Inspection screenshot is Google’s rendering of a site page during a successful live test. A SERP screenshot shows search results for a query.
