How to Improve Your Typing Speed and Accuracy in 2026

Improve typing speed by fixing accuracy first, practicing touch typing with eyes on the text, tracking errors alongside words per minute, and raising pace only when accuracy holds.

To type faster without making more mistakes, learn touch typing, make your accuracy stable at a comfortable pace, and only then push speed in small steps. Measure words per minute and errors together every time so that a faster score cannot hide a drop in accuracy. A standard QWERTY keyboard is enough to start, and no special keyboard has been shown to make typists faster.

Do you need to learn touch typing?

You do not strictly need it, but touch typing is the skill that structured keyboarding courses teach, and it is the approach this plan builds on. Touch typing means placing your fingers on the home row and reaching for other keys without looking down. Hunt-and-peck typists can be quick, but their speed usually plateaus because every key requires a visual search.

A beginning keyboarding syllabus at Panola College (course POFT 1329) lists touch-typing objectives that cover letters, numbers, symbols, and common words, with timed writing and speed goals built in. If you type for several hours a day, or your job depends on accurate input, that structure is worth following. Expect your pace to dip while you learn new finger reaches; the plan below keeps your pace controlled so that dip does not turn into a habit of errors.

Does a special keyboard make you faster?

Not on the evidence available. The University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences educational resource on typing states: “No special equipment is needed: just your standard work-issued QWERTY keyboard.” That guidance is written for a pharmacy audience, so apply it to your own situation with that context in mind.

Where key size matters is on touchscreens. A 2014 study by Aulck, Bartha, Johnson, Kim, and Thamsuwan in Human Factors tested 21 participants on four virtual-key sizes: 13, 16, 19, and 22 mm. Typing was 15% slower in the 13 mm condition. The authors concluded that keys below 16 mm may be too small for touch typing. That result applies to touchscreen keys, not to physical keyboards you buy for a desk.

On physical keyboards, OSHA’s general guidance gives key-center spacing of 18–19 mm horizontally and 18–21 mm vertically. That is a design reference for ergonomics, not a promise of higher speed. OSHA also states that alternative keyboards may promote a neutral wrist posture, but the evidence does not conclusively show that they prevent discomfort or injury.

Why accuracy comes before speed

Speed built on errors locks those errors into muscle habits, and they become harder to remove later. The UConn resource describes deliberate practice, reviewing mistakes, and short practice sessions, and it treats accuracy before speed as the practical priority. Your first goal is a pace where you can type a passage with few errors and fix the ones you make. Speed follows from that control.

Set a baseline and measure both numbers

Every measurement you take must use the same conditions. Otherwise you are comparing different tests, and the comparison tells you nothing. The Panola College syllabus uses timed writings of two, three, and five minutes, which gives you a ready set of durations to choose from.

Timed writing length What it tells you Best used for
2 minutes Short burst accuracy and pace Quick checks after a drill
3 minutes Pace with some sustained effort Weekly comparisons
5 minutes Endurance and error build-up over a longer run Baseline and retests

Pick one length, one passage, and one keyboard layout, and keep them fixed. For accuracy, the sources here do not establish a single universal definition, so choose one method and use it consistently. A simple option is to count errors in the passage and calculate the percentage of characters typed correctly. Record words per minute with the same method each time.

A practice plan you can follow

  1. Take a baseline. Type your chosen passage for the full duration. Record words per minute and error count. Repeat once more to see how much your score varies on a normal day.
  2. Drill touch-typing technique. Keep your eyes on the source text, not the keys. Start with the home row, then add the other letters, then numbers and symbols if your real tasks need them.
  3. Set a controlled pace. Choose a rate at which you can type the passage with few errors and fix each one as it happens rather than finishing and ignoring them.
  4. Log recurring errors. After each session, note the keys, punctuation, and words you missed. Practice those patterns in isolation before returning to full passages (see the next section).
  5. Retest under the same conditions. Use the same passage length, layout, and environment. Track words per minute and accuracy side by side.
  6. Raise pace only when accuracy holds. If your accuracy stays stable across several sessions, increase your target speed modestly and retest. If it drops, return to the previous stable pace.

This schedule is a practical synthesis of the instructional material cited above. It is not a tested universal program, and the sources do not establish an optimal daily practice duration or a guaranteed rate of improvement for adults.

Isolate the errors that repeat

Most typing errors come from a small set of patterns. Look for these in your log:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Transposed letters such as “teh” for “the,” which usually signal rushing through common words.
  • Doubled or skipped letters in words with repeated consonants, which often point to a rhythm problem rather than a finger reach problem.
  • Shift-symbol pairs such as parentheses, quotation marks, and the number-row symbols, where the wrong hand or the wrong modifier is used.
  • Punctuation and spacing at the ends of sentences, which are easy to skip when pace rises.
  • Specific words that appear in your own work, such as product names or technical terms you type every day.

To work on a pattern, type it slowly on its own, then in a short phrase, then in the full passage. Do not add speed until the pattern is clean in all three.

Set up the workstation for comfort

Comfortable practice matters because tension and awkward wrist angles make it harder to keep accuracy steady. OSHA’s keyboard guidance offers these points:

  • “Put the keyboard directly in front of you.”
  • “Your shoulders should be relaxed and your elbows close to your body.”
  • “Your wrists should be straight and in-line with your forearms.”
  • “Do not use keyboard feet if they increase bending of the wrist.”

If your wrists bend to reach the keys, adjust the chair, the desk height, or the keyboard position rather than forcing your hands into an angle.

Wrist and palm supports

If you use a wrist or palm support, keep your fingers moving above it while you type. Rest the heel of your hand or palm on the support only between bursts of typing, and do not press your wrist down into it. The support should fit both the keyboard and the workstation. OSHA’s guidance on wrist and palm supports also recommends taking regular rest breaks, so do not rely on a support to replace them.

When something goes wrong

  • Accuracy drops as you speed up. Return to your last pace where accuracy was stable, and repeat the drills for the patterns in your error log.
  • You keep looking at the keys. Cover the keyboard with a sheet of paper or use a blank screen, and return to home-row drills until your reaches feel automatic.
  • Your speed plateaus. Check whether your passages have become too easy to challenge you, and whether a specific group of keys or symbols is still costing you time.
  • Your wrists, hands, or shoulders hurt. Stop, check your posture and workstation setup against the points above, and take breaks. If discomfort continues, see a health professional rather than pushing through practice.

What the evidence does and does not establish

The sources cited here support a structured, accuracy-first approach, and they describe the instructional content typical of keyboarding courses. They do not establish a universal target for words per minute or accuracy. Those targets depend on your own baseline and the tasks you need to complete. A report that must be error-free needs a different accuracy threshold than a casual message.

The link between typing and writing quality is also less direct than many people assume. A UK Department for Education review, Making Sense of Mode Effects, describes mixed evidence on typed versus handwritten assessment performance. Its results depend on the task, time limits, the student’s familiarity with typing, and other conditions. Typing faster does not automatically improve writing quality or grades.

In short, the most reliable path is a steady, measured one: learn touch typing, keep accuracy ahead of speed, track both, and let your own results set the pace.
