Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start by identifying what sounds wrong: your voice to the other person, their voice to you, or the call connection itself. A muffled voice often points to a blocked microphone; faint or distorted incoming sound may involve the receiver, speaker or network; dropped calls more often call for location and carrier checks. Work through the matching steps below before assuming the iPhone needs repair.
First, identify what is going wrong
Notice whether people say your voice is muffled or noisy, whether you hear the other caller faintly or with crackling, or whether calls fail or drop. If the problem changes when you move to another location, cellular reception or the network may be involved. Apple recommends trying another location when troubleshooting call problems.

If possible, compare a regular call with a speakerphone call and test with another person. These comparisons can help distinguish microphone pickup from incoming audio or connection trouble.
If people can’t hear you clearly
Check for an obstruction, then test the microphones
- Temporarily remove the case, screen protector or film. Check that the microphone openings are not blocked by debris or an accessory.
- Open Voice Memos, speak toward the bottom of the iPhone, and play back the recording. If the recording is unclear, the issue may be with microphone pickup rather than the cellular connection.
- If the issue happens only on speakerphone, record a video while speaking near the top of the iPhone. Use the camera chooser to switch cameras and record another video, then compare the recordings. Apple provides these checks for microphone problems in its iPhone microphone troubleshooting guide.
- If only one app has the problem, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure that app is allowed to use the microphone.
Reduce background noise with Voice Isolation
On supported calls and devices, Voice Isolation can prioritize your voice and reduce ambient noise picked up by the microphone. During a call, open Control Center, tap the app’s call controls, tap Mic Mode, then choose Voice Isolation. The selection applies to the app in use and stays in effect for that app until you change it.

If you can’t hear the other caller clearly
Inspect the receiver and speaker openings
Remove the case or film and check that the receiver and speaker openings are not blocked or dirty. If an opening needs cleaning, Apple specifies using a clean, dry, small, soft-bristled brush. Avoid inserting sharp objects or using liquid cleaners. Apple’s speaker troubleshooting steps cover faint or distorted iPhone audio.

If calls are weak or unreliable in one place
Try Wi-Fi Calling where cellular coverage is poor
Wi-Fi Calling lets a supported iPhone make or receive calls through Wi-Fi when cellular signal is low or absent. Availability depends on your carrier and region, and not every Wi-Fi network supports it. To turn it on:
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- If your iPhone has multiple SIMs, select the line you want to use.
- Tap Wi-Fi Calling and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- Enter or confirm an emergency-services address if prompted.
When Wi-Fi Calling is active, the status bar may show Wi-Fi alongside your carrier name. Apple explains the feature in its Wi-Fi Calling support article and iPhone user guide.

Emergency-call handling depends on circumstances and local service: when cellular is available, emergency calls use it; if cellular is unavailable, they may use Wi-Fi. Location information or the registered address may be used to help route emergency services. Check your carrier’s guidance for how emergency calls work where you live.

If Wi-Fi Calling will not connect
- Confirm that your carrier and region support Wi-Fi Calling, and check that iOS is up to date.
- Restart the iPhone, try a different Wi-Fi network, or turn Wi-Fi Calling off and on again.
- As a later step, consider Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and preferred networks, as well as VPN and APN settings, so use it only if you are prepared to set those up again.
If calls fail, drop, or show No Service
Try basic connection checks
- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Check for an iOS update and a carrier settings update.
- Try another location to see whether service improves.
Apple’s guidance for failed or unreceived calls and SOS, No Service or Searching includes these connection checks.

Ask your carrier to check account and network issues
Contact your carrier to check local coverage or outages, account status and setup, billing blocks, device or network provisioning, and any call errors. Only the carrier can resolve account-specific restrictions or confirm service on its network. For call-failure issues, Apple says its Support app can run additional diagnostics on iPhone models running iOS 18 and later.
Quick Recap
When to seek help
- Contact your carrier when calls fail or service is absent, especially if the problem is tied to an area or account status.
- Arrange Apple service if microphone recordings remain unclear or incoming sound stays faulty after removing obstructions and trying the recommended checks.
- Use the symptom to guide the next step: unclear outgoing voice points first to microphone checks; poor incoming audio points to receiver, speaker and location checks; dropped calls point first to connection and carrier checks.
