1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe fastest way to improve a slow Xbox app download is to identify what is actually limiting it. Test whether the problem affects only Xbox or every download, compare Wi‑Fi with a wired connection, check whether the Xbox app is unpacking data to disk, and then work through Microsoft’s supported app-maintenance steps. Delivery Optimization is worth inspecting, but its documented bandwidth caps do not apply to manually started Store app downloads, so changing that limit is not a guaranteed Xbox game-download fix.
Start with the symptom, not a setting
A download that looks slow can have several different causes: the home network, a wireless connection, the content server, the Xbox app, Windows services, limited free space, or disk activity while files are being installed. The first decision is whether Xbox is the only application affected.

Compare Xbox with another download
Run a separate download under similar conditions and compare the result with the Xbox app. Use the same PC, connection, and approximate time of day where possible. This is only a directional test: different servers, protocols, congestion, and disk workloads can produce different speeds. A fast browser download does not prove that Xbox’s content server or installation process is healthy, but a slowdown across several applications points away from an Xbox-only setting.
- Only Xbox is slow: investigate the app, Gaming Services, the particular game, and the possibility that data is being unpacked rather than transferred.
- Everything is slow: investigate Wi‑Fi, the router, other users and devices, and the internet connection before changing Xbox or Windows app settings.
- The speed repeatedly falls to zero while installation continues: check disk activity and free space before assuming the network has stopped.
Check what the speed display represents
Xbox may continue to show a downloading state while it is unpacking or writing received data to the drive. A recent report described this as a possible explanation for apparent slowdowns, not as a universal explanation for every PC. Open Task Manager while the download is active and watch the Ethernet or Wi‑Fi graph alongside Disk activity. High disk activity with little network traffic suggests installation work is competing with the transfer display.

Run a low-risk network test
Pause competing traffic
Stop other game downloads, video streams, cloud synchronisation jobs, and large uploads on the PC. Check whether another device on the home network is consuming the connection. Start the Xbox download again after the competing traffic has stopped. This test does not prove that Xbox is at fault, but it prevents a busy connection from disguising the original problem.
Compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet
If the PC has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and repeat the same download test. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic purchase, not a guaranteed cure. A wired connection can reveal Wi‑Fi interference, weak signal strength, or roaming between access points, but it cannot fix a slow Xbox content server, a disk bottleneck, or an installation-service failure.
Record the Xbox app’s displayed speed before and after the change, and note whether the connection is stable or merely produces a higher short-lived peak. If Ethernet changes the result consistently, improve the Wi‑Fi environment or continue using wired networking for large installs. If both connections behave the same, move to Windows and app checks rather than buying networking hardware immediately.
Make sure the drive can finish the installation
Large games need room for the downloaded package, temporary files, and the installed files. Confirm that the destination drive has adequate free space before starting another attempt. During the download, watch disk activity in Task Manager and observe whether the Xbox app’s speed changes when the drive is busy.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Do not assume that an SSD upgrade is necessary. Storage is a likely bottleneck only when the evidence shows sustained high disk activity, long pauses during unpacking, or installation errors associated with space or write operations. A faster drive cannot increase a network transfer that is already limited by Wi‑Fi, the internet connection, or the content server.
Inspect Delivery Optimization without expecting a magic speed increase
Windows uses Delivery Optimization, a cloud-based downloader, for Windows Updates, Microsoft Store apps, and other Microsoft products. Microsoft says it identifies a download source and dynamically optimizes bandwidth use. That makes its controls relevant to inspect when Microsoft downloads behave unexpectedly, but it does not establish that Delivery Optimization is the cause of a particular Xbox app slowdown.
Open the Delivery Optimization settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Delivery Optimization.
- Review the configured download and upload options, then open Activity monitor to see Delivery Optimization activity.
Look for an unusually restrictive foreground or background limit and for other Microsoft downloads competing for bandwidth. Keep a record of the original values before changing anything so that you can reverse a test.

Understand the bandwidth-limit caveat
Microsoft’s documentation states: “Bandwidth limits only apply to Delivery Optimization for automatic updates downloads.” It also says that manually initiated downloads, including downloading an app from the Windows Store, are not subject to those limits. A game that you personally started in the Xbox app therefore should not be expected to become faster simply because you raise a Delivery Optimization cap.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Delivery Optimization also exposes a configurable monthly upload limit ranging from 1 to 500 GB. That figure controls sharing/upload behaviour; it is not a download-speed benchmark and does not tell you how quickly an Xbox game will install.
Use cache controls only for a relevant problem
Microsoft says the Delivery Optimization cache clears automatically. If disk space is needed, Disk Cleanup can remove Delivery Optimization files manually. Clearing those files is a storage-maintenance step, not a proven throughput improvement. Use it when the cache is consuming space or when Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance directs you to do so, rather than as a routine Xbox speed tweak.
Do not disable services or edit the registry as a first response
Turning off Delivery Optimization is not a guaranteed Xbox fix. Microsoft notes that disabling it makes devices download updates directly from Microsoft; it does not disable updating. Registry edits and service changes add recovery work and can obscure the original cause. Keep the default configuration unless a specific, reproducible problem justifies a controlled change.

1. Close and reopen the Xbox app
Exit the Xbox app completely, wait a moment, and launch it again. Resume the download and check whether it progresses normally. A temporary sign-in, queue, or app-state problem can clear without changing Windows networking.
2. Install Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Recheck the download only after the restart has completed.
3. Update Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and use Get updates to update Store components. The Xbox app and Gaming Services depend on Microsoft’s app platform, so keeping Store components current is a sensible compatibility check.
4. Use Windows game-installation troubleshooting
If the symptom is an install that stalls, fails, or repeatedly resumes from the same point, follow the current Windows game-installation troubleshooting guidance from Xbox Support. Use the instructions on that page as written because the available tool steps can change with Windows and Gaming Services versions.

5. Repair, then reset the Xbox app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair first and test the download.
- If the problem remains, return to the same page and select Reset, then sign in again if prompted.
Repair attempts to fix the app without removing its data. Reset can remove local app data and may require sign-in or queue setup again. Neither action is a network-speed upgrade; use them when the app is failing, the queue is corrupt, or installation state is broken.
6. Reinstall only after the lower-risk steps
Reinstalling the Xbox app can clear persistent corruption, but it also costs time and may require you to configure the app again. Reserve it for continuing app or installation symptoms after updates, repair, reset, and the relevant Xbox Support guidance have been tried.

If the download is merely slower than expected but is still transferring and installing, run the network, disk, and Delivery Optimization checks first. Use the repair tool when the symptom points to a service failure, not simply because the displayed megabytes per second are lower than a speed-test result.
Choose the next step from the evidence
| What you observe | Most useful next check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox and other downloads are slow | Pause household traffic and compare Wi‑Fi with wired Ethernet | A consistent improvement on Ethernet implicates the wireless path; no improvement points toward the connection, server, or broader congestion. |
| Only Xbox is slow, while another download is normal | Restart Xbox, update Windows and Store, then inspect the queue and installation state | The issue is more likely app-, service-, game-, or server-specific than a general Windows bandwidth cap. |
| Network usage drops while disk usage rises | Check free space and allow unpacking to finish | The displayed slowdown may reflect installation work rather than a loss of internet throughput. |
| Download stops and an installation error appears | Use Xbox game-installation troubleshooting, then Repair/Reset and Gaming Services guidance | This is an app or service reliability problem; changing Delivery Optimization limits is unlikely to address it. |
| Delivery Optimization shows activity during an update | Review limits and Activity monitor, preserving the original settings | The controls may explain automatic-update traffic, but Microsoft’s documented caps do not govern manually initiated Store app downloads. |
Run a repeatable test instead of relying on one speed reading
- Write down the game, drive, connection type, free space, and the Xbox speed display.
- Pause other downloads and large uploads on the PC and home network.
- Observe both network and disk activity for several minutes, including any period when the speed falls sharply.
- If practical, repeat the test over wired Ethernet without changing anything else.
- Restart the Xbox app, then repeat after Windows and Microsoft Store updates are installed.
- Compare the pattern, not just the highest displayed peak: a stable lower rate may complete sooner than a bursty connection that repeatedly pauses for disk work.
This process separates a connection change from an app-state change and helps you avoid repeating repairs that cannot affect the limiting factor.
What the recent “smart download client” report does—and does not—tell PC users
A July 2026 Windows Central report described Microsoft testing a “smart download client” with Xbox Alpha Skip-Ahead Insiders. The report described the rollout as console-targeted, while the author observed better consistency on Xbox PC devices. That observation is not a controlled benchmark for every Windows PC and does not establish a generally available PC feature. Do not change troubleshooting decisions based on the assumption that this client is enabled for your account; verify rollout status through current Xbox release information if the feature is specifically mentioned.
Avoid common dead ends
- Raising a Delivery Optimization cap: Microsoft says the cap applies to automatic Delivery Optimization update downloads, not manually initiated Store app downloads.
- Disabling Delivery Optimization: this changes how updates are sourced but does not disable updating and is not a proven Xbox speed fix.
- Editing the registry: unsupported tweaks can create new update or app problems without addressing a server or disk bottleneck.
- Buying storage or networking hardware immediately: first verify high disk activity or a repeatable Wi‑Fi-versus-Ethernet difference.
- Resetting or reinstalling repeatedly: repair and reset are useful for app-state failures, not for increasing the capacity of an internet connection.
When to stop troubleshooting
If other downloads are normal, Ethernet does not change the result, the drive has free space, and the Xbox app is updated and functioning, the remaining limitation may be the game’s content server or the Xbox service path. There is no reliable setting in the documented Windows controls that guarantees a faster manually started Xbox game download. Keep the app open, avoid competing traffic, and distinguish a genuine transfer stall from the unpacking pauses shown by disk activity. Escalate with the current Xbox Support instructions when the queue fails or produces an installation error.
