If your portable internet radio has weak Wi-Fi, first check reception where the radio sits, then reduce distance and obstacles between it and the router. Try the free placement and setup checks before considering an extender: it can help only if it receives a usable signal from the router where you place it.
Check whether the problem is Wi-Fi coverage
Look at the radio’s Wi-Fi indicator, if it has one, and test another Wi-Fi device in the same spot. If both struggle there, the issue is more likely to be coverage or interference. If other devices connect normally, check the radio’s network settings and model-specific instructions instead. Temporarily move the radio closer to the router. If the connection improves, distance or obstacles are likely contributing. If it does not, weak reception may not be the cause: confirm that the router and internet service are working, and check the Wi-Fi password and the radio’s network configuration. Improve the radio and router’s placement
Move the radio to a clearer spot
Where practical, place the radio closer to the router and away from large metal objects, dense barriers, and appliances that may interfere with reception. A small move to a more open position can be worth trying before you change the network or buy equipment.

Reposition the router
If several devices have weak reception in the same area, put the router in a more open location and closer to the devices that need coverage, if your home layout allows it. ASUS recommends reducing barriers and avoiding interference sources; its examples include microwaves and refrigerators. ASUS router and extender troubleshooting.
Adjust antennas only when the equipment allows it
Some radios have a user-adjustable Wi-Fi antenna; others do not. Follow the manual for your specific radio rather than assuming an adjustment applies to every model. When a Wi-Fi extender may help
Consider an extender if the router’s coverage remains weak where you need to use the radio. Place it between the router and the weak-signal area, at a point where it still receives a strong, usable signal from the router. An extender placed in the dead zone may have too little signal to relay reliably. TP-Link emphasizes that placement is a key factor in extender performance; Verizon gives similar between-router-and-weak-area guidance for its own extender. An extender can improve coverage, but it cannot fix a failed internet connection or incorrect radio settings. The available guidance does not establish compatibility with every portable radio or promise a particular improvement. Confirm that the extender and radio can work with your network before relying on this solution.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Check the radio’s signal indicator, if available, and test another Wi-Fi device where the radio is used.
- Move the radio closer to the router temporarily. If reception improves, try a more practical position with fewer obstacles.
- If multiple devices struggle, reposition the router in a more open location and reduce nearby barriers or sources of interference.
- Check the Wi-Fi password and the radio’s network settings; follow its manufacturer’s instructions to reconnect if needed.
- Adjust a radio or router antenna only if it is present and the applicable manual recommends doing so.
- If coverage is still weak, try an extender between the router and radio where the extender itself can receive a usable router signal.
Why a radio may still disconnect
Weak Wi-Fi is only one possible cause of messages such as “Cannot connect to the Wi-Fi Network” or interruptions and dropouts. A wrong password, a radio configuration issue, or an internet or router problem can produce similar symptoms. If moving closer does not help and other devices work normally, use the radio maker’s setup and troubleshooting instructions rather than assuming an extender is the answer.
