Improve website performance by measuring what visitors actually experience, locating the slow step, changing that step, and checking the result again. Start with field data for Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS); use PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, and Chrome DevTools to investigate. A single lab score is not proof that real visitors are getting a faster, more responsive, more stable page.
What website performance means
Website performance is more than how quickly the first pixels appear. Core Web Vitals describe three parts of the experience: loading, responsiveness to interaction, and visual stability. Their current metrics are LCP, INP, and CLS.

- LCP measures when the largest image or text block in the viewport is rendered. Google’s guidance is to aim for an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of visits.
- INP reflects responsiveness across a visitor’s interactions during a page visit.
- CLS represents unexpected movement of page content while it is being viewed.
Google evaluates Core Web Vitals around the 75th-percentile visit experience. Use the three metrics as outcomes, rather than treating one synthetic score as the definition of performance.

How to measure the experience visitors get
Check field data first
Enter the page in PageSpeed Insights and inspect its Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data when enough observations are available. Compare URL-level data with origin-level data, and mobile with desktop. Origin aggregates can hide a problem on one page; URL-level results may not appear when that URL has too little traffic.
#1 Best Overall
Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report groups similar URLs and summarizes their field performance. Use it to identify groups that need attention, then inspect individual pages where possible. If public field data is missing or too coarse to diagnose a problem, collect real-user measurements (RUM) on your own site. Google’s web-vitals JavaScript library is a wrapper for measuring the metrics with browser APIs and sending the results to an analytics endpoint.
Use lab tests to reproduce and investigate
Run Lighthouse or inspect the page in Chrome DevTools to investigate a suspected bottleneck in a controlled browser session. Lighthouse is useful for repeatable diagnostics, but a simulated run without user input cannot measure INP. Total Blocking Time (TBT) is a lab indicator of possible interactivity trouble, not a substitute for field INP.

In DevTools, use the Network panel to inspect requested resources and their load times. Record activity in the Performance panel to examine browser and main-thread work during loading and interaction. Lab conditions differ from real visits, which use different devices, networks, and interaction patterns; interpret a lab run as diagnostic evidence, not as a forecast for every visitor.

Find the LCP element and examine its timing breakdown before changing code. The question is not simply whether an image is large; it is when the browser discovers the important resource, how quickly it loads, and how soon it can render it.

- Check when the resource becomes discoverable. If the main image or other LCP resource is only discovered after JavaScript runs, it may start loading late. Make the resource discoverable early and start its load promptly.
- Check whether rendering is delayed. If the resource has arrived but the LCP element appears much later, inspect browser work that could be holding up rendering. Large JavaScript files can occupy the main thread and delay rendering even after an image download finishes.
- Check the resource transfer. Reduce the time needed to load the LCP resource without sacrificing the quality visitors need.
- Check the initial document response. A slow time to first byte (TTFB) makes a fast LCP difficult because the browser cannot begin useful page work before it receives the response. Use TTFB and first contentful paint (FCP) as supporting clues.
Slow TTFB can result from redirects, distance to the server, network conditions, or a cache bypass or miss. Use the evidence from the affected page and visits to choose a fix; a delivery or caching change is relevant only when the response path is the bottleneck.
How to investigate INP and CLS
For poor INP
Use real-user interaction data to find which interactions are slow. A lab run with no user input cannot produce an INP measurement, so a good Lighthouse result alone does not establish that visitors’ interactions are responsive. DevTools recordings can help reproduce and inspect activity around an interaction, while field data shows whether the issue occurs for users.

- Used Book in Good Condition
For unexpected layout shifts
Use CLS observations to establish whether unexpected movement is occurring, then use the page in a browser and inspect when the movement happens. Compare the affected page and visit context rather than assuming every shift has the same cause. The available official guidance establishes how CLS is measured, but does not support a universal step-by-step fix for every layout-shift problem.

A practical improvement and verification loop
- Record a baseline. Note field LCP, INP, and CLS where available, including whether the data is for the URL or whole origin and whether it is mobile or desktop.
- Reproduce the issue. Use PageSpeed Insights and a Lighthouse or DevTools lab investigation to narrow down the likely page, resource, response, or interaction bottleneck.
- Change the diagnosed step. For LCP, work through resource discovery, rendering delay, transfer time, and initial HTML response. For INP and CLS, use observed field problems and page interaction evidence to guide investigation rather than applying generic fixes.
- Repeat the lab check. Look for regressions and confirm that the change affected the suspected step.
- Watch field results as they accumulate. Confirm whether real visitors’ experience improves; keep monitoring after release instead of treating one run as proof.
For a useful before-and-after comparison, keep the context aligned: same URL versus origin, same device category, and field compared with field or lab compared with lab. Differences in user devices, networks, concurrent activity, and interactions can make lab results diverge from field experience.
