How to Improve Weak Wi-Fi Reception on a Laptop

Compare another device in the same spot, improve the signal path, and check laptop settings before spending money on Wi-Fi hardware.

First find out whether the weak connection follows the laptop or the place: compare it with another device on the same Wi-Fi, in the same spot. If both struggle, focus on router placement, obstacles, interference, or coverage. If only the laptop struggles, check its Wi-Fi adapter, settings, and driver before buying hardware.

Diagnose whether the problem is the laptop or the location

Compare the laptop and another device on the same network in two places: the weak spot and near the router. Note whether the signal or connection improves in each place. Microsoft recommends testing in multiple home locations before and after changing the setup: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

  • If several devices lose reception in the same place, suspect coverage, obstacles, interference, or router settings.
  • If the laptop is the only device affected, investigate its adapter, driver, and power settings.
  • If the laptop works near the router but not in one room, the issue is more likely the signal path or local coverage than a complete adapter failure.

Intel’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies drivers, adapter settings, router configuration, and interference as areas to check: Intel Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting.

Improve the signal path before changing settings

Test closer to the router

Take the laptop closer to the router and check whether the connection becomes reliable. This is a diagnostic test as well as a temporary workaround: a strong connection nearby but a weak one in the usual workspace points toward distance, obstacles, or coverage.

Reposition the router and laptop

When practical, place the router in a central, elevated location rather than on the floor, inside a cabinet, or at the far edge of the home. Keep it away from walls, metal objects, and other obstructions. The laptop’s position and orientation can also affect the path between its antenna and the router.

Microsoft’s setup guidance is to “Put your wireless router somewhere where it will receive the strongest signal with the least amount of interference.” See Microsoft’s wireless-network setup guide. Change one thing at a time, then repeat your comparison in the weak spot and near the router so you can tell whether the change helped.

Choose the Wi-Fi band that fits the room

If your router lists separate network names for its bands, try each available option from the laptop. The best choice depends on distance, walls, congestion, and what the laptop and router support.

Band Typical advantage Trade-off When to try it
2.4 GHz Generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better. Can be more congested and may offer less throughput than 5 GHz. Try it when the laptop is farther away or separated from the router by walls.
5 GHz Generally offers faster throughput and may be less crowded. Usually has shorter range and weaker wall penetration than 2.4 GHz. Try it closer to the router or when throughput and local congestion favor it.
6 GHz Provides an additional Wi-Fi band on compatible equipment. Requires Wi-Fi 6E support from both the router and laptop adapter, and has shorter range. Use it only if both devices support Wi-Fi 6E and the laptop is within useful range.

These are general band trade-offs; actual results depend on the equipment and conditions in your home. Microsoft provides a band overview at its Wi-Fi connection guidance.

Check interference, congestion, and router settings

Other nearby Wi-Fi networks and devices sharing radio frequencies can affect reliability. If several devices have trouble in one area, check the router’s instructions for choosing a less congested channel or band. The best setting depends on the router, laptop adapter, and local radio conditions; channel availability and rules also vary by region.

Microsoft calls out one narrow setting worth checking only in a specific situation: if the signal is strong and the channel is clear but the connection remains unreliable, a 2.4 GHz channel width of 40 MHz can cause problems with some older adapters. Its guidance suggests trying 20 MHz in that case. This is a targeted troubleshooting change, not a universal recommendation to alter channel width. Refer to Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps and your router’s own instructions.

If only one Windows laptop has weak reception

Windows menu names can differ by version and laptop maker. Start with the basic checks, then use the laptop manufacturer’s support instructions for model-specific drivers and adapter controls.

  1. Confirm Wi-Fi is on. Open Settings > Network & internet and check that Wi-Fi is enabled. Also confirm that Airplane mode is off.
  2. Check that Windows detects the adapter. Open Device Manager > Network adapters. If the wireless adapter is missing or shows an error, consult the laptop maker’s guidance for that model.
  3. Check the driver. Install the Wi-Fi driver recommended for your laptop model and Windows version. Avoid assuming that a generic driver is the right choice for every device.
  4. Review power management if the connection drops or behaves inconsistently. In Device Manager > Network adapters, open the Wi-Fi adapter’s Properties and, if a Power Management tab is available, check whether Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power is enabled. Microsoft describes turning this option off as a troubleshooting step; the tab or setting may not appear on every device.

Microsoft’s guide covers Windows Wi-Fi checks, while Intel’s article lists adapter settings and drivers among possible causes: Microsoft Support and Intel Support.

When an extender or USB Wi-Fi adapter makes sense

Use an extender for a genuine coverage gap

An extender may help when one area has poor coverage and you cannot move the router or laptop. Put it where it can still receive a usable signal from the router, rather than in the dead zone itself. Setup and compatibility vary, and a repeater can be difficult to configure or reduce performance. Microsoft lists an extender as one option for extending a wireless network: Microsoft’s setup guide.

Consider a USB adapter when the built-in adapter appears to be the limitation

If the network performs well for other devices in the same place but the laptop continues to struggle after its settings and driver are checked, a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter with an external antenna is one possible workaround. It is not a guaranteed fix: confirm that it supports the laptop’s operating system and the bands and Wi-Fi standards used by your router. Microsoft identifies an external-antenna USB adapter as a possible option in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Choose based on the cause, not the product category

  • For a weak signal throughout one part of the home, prioritize router relocation; consider an extender if relocation is impractical and a usable signal reaches its intended position.
  • For a problem isolated to one laptop, first check the adapter and driver; consider a USB adapter only if the built-in hardware appears to be the constraint.

For Mac laptops, menu paths and adapter controls differ. Apple also notes that wireless interference and placement of USB or Thunderbolt devices can matter; see Apple’s guidance on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference.
