If that is not enough, adjust sensitivity and battery-saving controls gradually, then test with a normal visitor. The goal is fewer unnecessary recordings—not fewer useful arrivals.
Why a video doorbell battery drains quickly
Battery life depends on how much motion the doorbell records, its settings, and the surrounding temperature. Google says the battery estimate in its app adapts as the device learns the activity conditions, so treat it as an estimate rather than a fixed promise. eufy also identifies trigger count, recording duration, and environmental temperature as discharge factors.

Frequent traffic or movement in the camera’s view can prompt repeated recordings. Cold weather can also affect charging: Google Home and Nest Help says Nest camera and doorbell batteries will not charge below 32°F (0°C), including when a Nest Doorbell (battery) is connected to doorbell wiring. That threshold applies to the named Nest devices, not necessarily to other brands. Check your exact model’s operating and charging guidance.
How to tune settings without losing visitor coverage

Review what is triggering recordings
Look through recent alerts and clips for repeat triggers such as passing traffic or moving branches. This helps identify what to exclude without guessing.

Narrow the motion or activity zone
Set the zone around the approach and doorstep, excluding irrelevant parts of the view where your model allows it. A smaller zone can cut recordings caused by nearby activity, but it still needs to include where visitors first appear. Google Nest and Ring document zone controls; names and locations vary by model and app.

Lower sensitivity only if needed
If irrelevant alerts continue, reduce motion sensitivity a little at a time where supported. eufy documents sensitivity adjustment for supported battery doorbells. A setting that is too low can miss a visitor, so test it rather than assuming fewer alerts mean better battery life.

Consider recording and retrigger trade-offs
If the doorbell still records too often, look for a battery-saving mode, lower video quality, shorter clips, or a longer interval before another recording. Google and eufy describe some of these controls, but their availability and names depend on the model. Change one setting at a time and check whether a typical visitor still produces a timely alert and a useful clip.

Test for missed motion and adjust back if necessary
Have someone approach as a visitor normally would, then confirm that the alert arrives and the clip shows the arrival. If events are missing, revisit the zone and sensitivity first. Ring says increasing Motion Frequency can help when motion events are missed, though more frequent detection can use more battery.

What each battery-saving change can cost

These are practical trade-offs, not a measured ranking of which setting saves the most power. Preserve the part of the camera view that shows a visitor approaching, and evaluate each change by checking real alerts and clips.
Brand-specific settings and cold-weather limits
Google Nest Doorbell (battery)
Google documents Activity Zones, video-quality optimization, shorter event recordings, longer gaps between recordings, and a lower-battery-use setting. It also documents doorbell wiring or an indoor power adapter as power options for Nest Doorbell (battery). Tethered charging is limited to 80% after the initial installation guidance, and the battery will not charge below 32°F (0°C), even when wired. Its rapid-discharge guidance also points to trigger count, recording duration, and temperature. Follow only the app instructions that match your specific doorbell model: eufy battery-life settings and eufy rapid-discharge guidance.

Ring’s motion settings include zones and detection controls. Its guidance says Motion Frequency can be increased when a device misses motion events; more frequent detection can reduce battery life. See Ring’s motion-detection instructions.

When settings are not enough
If the weather is cold, check the manufacturer’s charging and operating limits for the exact model, and consider a more sheltered location where appropriate. Do not assume that a power adapter or wiring option made for one brand works with another. Use only power options that the manufacturer documents for your doorbell.
If you still need to reduce unnecessary recordings, return to the zone and sensitivity rather than disabling motion events altogether. After any adjustment, verify a typical arrival; battery savings are not useful if the doorbell no longer alerts you to visitors.
