Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a video call freezes or turns pixelated on a slow or unstable connection, reduce the call’s video demand first: lower the resolution or turn off your camera. Then check both upload and download, improve the connection between your device and router, and rule out device or network restrictions. If video still struggles, keep the call on audio rather than sacrificing clear conversation.
Reduce video quality before changing your network
Video calls send your camera feed upstream and receive other people’s feeds downstream. Lowering either direction’s resolution can reduce demand; disabling your own camera cuts the data you send, while audio-only receiving reduces what you download.

Google Meet
On a computer, open Settings > Video and review the send and receive resolution options. Google lists 360p as lower-data than 720p; receiving at 360p in single-feed mode also turns off other participants’ thumbnails. The receive options include Audio Only, which uses the least data. 1080p uses the most data, requires compatible hardware, and sending it is limited to certain Google Workspace and Google One editions. Available controls depend on account and current product settings. Google Meet video quality settings.
Zoom
If network or computer performance is poor, disable HD video in Zoom’s video settings. Zoom says HD uses approximately 2 Mbps more in each direction; this is its estimate for the setting, not a universal requirement for every video call. If bandwidth is congested and audio matters most, turn off your video feed. Zoom HD video guidance and Zoom low-bandwidth guidance.

Check the connection in both directions
Run a speed test and note both upload and download results. Upload matters when you send camera video; download matters when you receive the other participants’ video. Compare results with the service level you expect from your internet provider, and repeat the test or watch performance over time if it varies. A single result does not establish the cause: available call bandwidth can be affected by Wi-Fi conditions, other household activity, latency, or the other participant’s connection.

Try Ethernet as a comparison
If your computer and router have compatible Ethernet ports, connect them directly and see whether the call improves. Google recommends testing wired Ethernet to help identify whether Wi-Fi is contributing to Meet problems. If you lack an Ethernet cable, it is a practical optional purchase for this test; a computer without an Ethernet port may require a compatible adapter. Google Meet connection troubleshooting.

Choose Wi-Fi band for your location
There is no single best Wi-Fi band for every room. A 5 GHz connection can offer faster throughput and less congestion, but its shorter range and weaker wall penetration can make it unreliable farther from the router. A 2.4 GHz connection generally reaches farther and passes obstacles better, but is slower and often more congested. The best choice depends on router and device support, distance, walls, and interference. Microsoft guidance on Wi-Fi connectivity.
Improve Wi-Fi coverage before buying equipment
- Move closer to the router and reduce the walls or ceilings between it and your device.
- If possible, place the router in a central location and away from sources of interference.
- Update router firmware and your device’s network-adapter drivers.
- Consider a repeater or other coverage solution only if the problem is a weak signal in part of your home. It will not fix a slow internet service or a problem elsewhere in the connection.
Microsoft identifies repeaters as one way to improve signal strength and newer router or adapter equipment as a possible upgrade when simpler measures fail. Microsoft Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Check for device, VPN, or managed-network problems
A slow or unstable call is not always caused by the internet plan. Video processing can tax a computer’s CPU as well as its connection; closing other apps and lowering video quality can help distinguish that from a network limitation. If only one participant sees freezing or delay, ask the other person to check their connection too. Microsoft notes that either participant can be the source of a call-quality problem.

A VPN can add delay if it routes call traffic through another network location. If you use one, test a call without it only where your organization’s policy allows. Firewalls, security inspection, or other managed network settings can also affect calls. For a work account, ask IT to investigate rather than changing VPN, firewall, traffic-routing, or quality-of-service settings yourself. Google discusses VPN and firewall effects on Meet; Microsoft provides administrator guidance for Teams network configuration. Google Meet troubleshooting and Microsoft Teams network preparation.
Switch to audio if video cannot hold up
If lowering resolution and improving the connection do not stabilize video, turn off your camera and continue with audio. Depending on the platform and meeting, you may also be able to join by phone or use a mobile app for meeting audio. Google Meet recommends these alternatives when a network is poor; Zoom’s low-bandwidth guidance also recommends disabling video when needed. Zoom says its client checks available bandwidth and quality-of-service telemetry to support a stable connection while prioritizing audio and screen sharing over video.
