Start by facing a window or turning your desk so daylight falls on your face, not from behind you. If daylight is unavailable or unreliable, place a soft, adjustable light near the webcam and aim it toward your face. The goal is balanced light that shows your features clearly—not maximum brightness.
Set up the room before adding equipment
Open your webcam preview and notice where the brightest light is coming from: a window, overhead fixture, desk lamp or display. A bright source behind you can make your face look dark or turn you into a silhouette. If practical, turn your seat or desk so the window is in front of you or to one side. If you cannot move, close blinds or curtains and add soft light from the front. Logitech’s video meeting-space guidance warns that strong backlighting can darken the subject, while direct sunlight may create sharp contrast.

A window does not need to be centered in front of you. Light from the side can give the face shape; balance it with a shaded lamp or softer fill from the other side if one side is too dark. Cisco Webex’s lighting guide describes this kind of window-and-lamp arrangement.
Add a soft light near the camera if needed
If the window is not enough, position a lamp or video light around face level, close to the webcam’s direction. Aim it toward your face without shining it straight into your eyes. A desk lamp behind the webcam can provide fill, and a soft face-level light is a useful option when a front-facing window is unavailable. If one side of your face remains noticeably darker, add a second, dimmer light on that side or bounce light off a nearby light-colored wall. Keep the fill weaker than the main light so the image retains some natural dimension. Overhead light alone can leave shadows around the eyes; a front-facing source is usually a better starting point.
Balance brightness and color in the camera preview
Adjust the light while watching the webcam preview. If your face looks washed out or loses detail, lower the brightness, soften the source or move it slightly off-center. If your face looks dark, brighten it or reduce the brightness behind you. A bright background can overpower the face, so adding more front light is not always the only fix.

Color temperature recommendations vary by source and setting. BenQ suggests neutral white around 4000K–5000K as a typical starting point for video calls in its video-call lighting guide. Logitech describes 3000K–4500K as typical for diffused fluorescent fixtures in office settings in its meeting-space PDF. Webex discusses approximately 6000K LEDs as an option for mixing with daylight and about 2700K for warmer light. These are context-specific suggestions, not universal camera-calibration rules. Use the preview to check whether your skin looks natural and whether nearby lights create an obvious orange/blue mismatch.
Fix reflections and screen glare
If glasses show a bright ring or hotspot, move the light farther away, raise it, shift it to one side or lower its brightness. A light directly in line with the camera is more likely to reflect visibly. Check the webcam image after each small change; how the room looks to your eyes may not match what the camera captures.

Reflections can also appear on a monitor or other glossy surface. Reposition the light and inspect the preview again. A monitor light bar may be useful for illuminating your desk, but it is not necessarily designed to light your face; BenQ distinguishes workspace lighting from dedicated front lighting and notes that a bar may not replace facial lighting in a strongly backlit setup.

Try the free placement changes first. If they do not give you consistent, balanced light, compare options by face coverage, softness, brightness and color control, reflection risk, camera position, mounting and desk footprint. These trade-offs matter more than the label on the light.

If you need to buy a light, an adjustable LED key light or soft panel is a reasonable category to consider. A dimmable ring light is another option, with the reflection and harshness trade-offs above. Before joining, open the meeting app’s camera preview and check these points:
- Your face is clearly visible and not washed out.
- The background is not much brighter than your face.
- Glasses and screens do not show distracting reflections.
- A window, lamp or overhead fixture is not casting an unwanted one-sided shadow.
- The room lights do not make your face look conspicuously too warm or too cool.
Make small adjustments to placement or brightness, then leave the setup in place if it works for the next call. Elgato recommends checking the preview shortly before a meeting.
