Capture and keep an unchanged master before deinterlacing, denoising, or compressing a viewing copy. Noise reduction can smooth away real detail, so there is no single filter setting that suits every tape.
Start with the tape, VCR, and video standard
The playback signal sets the ceiling for the transfer. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) advises using the best available player because the signal fed to the digitizer strongly affects the result. A clean, reliable consumer VCR can work; a professional, prosumer, or S-VHS deck may offer better playback. Choose a deck compatible with the tape’s video standard and recording mode, and do not play a visibly damaged cassette in an erratic or dirty machine.

Check LP compatibility rather than assuming every deck can play every VHS recording correctly. CCI notes that some S-VHS VCRs do not support LP playback; an incompatible tape may run at the wrong speed or show horizontal noise bands. Recommendations also need to account for whether the recording is NTSC, PAL, or SECAM.

Connect the VCR using its best supported output
Use the connection supported by both the deck and the rest of the capture chain. CCI’s workflow uses S-Video from an S-VHS VCR when available, with audio carried separately over composite audio leads; it describes this as producing a better picture than composite video in that arrangement. A standard VHS VCR may provide only composite video, which is then the appropriate option.
- S-VHS deck with compatible S-Video inputs: connect video over S-Video and audio separately.
- Standard VHS deck or incompatible capture chain: use composite video and the appropriate separate audio connections.
Check the actual outputs and inputs on the VCR, any TBC, and the capture interface before buying a cable or adapter. A cable cannot provide an S-Video signal from a deck that has no S-Video output.

Use a TBC to address timing problems—not as a universal cleanup filter
A time-base corrector adjusts variations in synchronization timing that can distort the picture, including skew. Some professional or prosumer decks include correction; other setups use a separate TBC. It is most relevant when playback timing is unstable, not as a guarantee that every tape defect or kind of video noise will disappear.
CCI warns that TBCs can introduce visible artifacts, including ghost-like over-enhancement and alternating light and dark horizontal bars. Test a short section and inspect the output before transferring a whole tape. If correction creates defects, reassess the device and signal chain rather than assuming more correction is better.

The University of British Columbia Digitization Centre’s guide to digitizing NTSC recordings includes a TBC in a preservation-oriented system. It also distinguishes that setup from basic consumer conversion systems that may be sufficient for access copies where preservation is not the goal.
Capture and keep an unchanged master
Where equipment and storage allow, preserve a direct, unchanged capture before making viewing or sharing versions. Keep the original VHS interlaced during capture, as CCI recommends. Interlaced footage can look combed on a progressive display; that is a playback issue to address in a derived copy, not a reason to alter the preservation master at capture.

Choose capture format with the intended use and storage capacity in mind. CCI says uncompressed capture retains the analog signal information but creates very large files. Lossy formats use less storage by discarding some signal information. Avoid repeatedly recompressing already compressed copies.

The VHS-Decode project documentation describes an archival output using interlaced 10-bit 4:2:2 FFV1 video with FLAC audio. That is a project-specific workflow example, not a requirement for every VHS transfer.

Choose a setup that fits your goal and tapes

For services, CCI specifically recommends asking providers what equipment they use and whether they use a TBC or noise reduction. The same questions help clarify what processing, if any, will be applied before you receive a file.
Make denoising and deinterlacing separate, reversible choices
Work on a derived copy, leaving the unchanged master intact. Depending on the intended use, that copy may be deinterlaced, corrected for color or levels, denoised, sharpened, or compressed for delivery. Compare it with the master and keep the changes reversible where possible.
No universal VHS denoising filter or setting is established by the cited sources, and they do not provide a controlled percentage for how much a particular filter improves a general transfer. Use conservative filtering and inspect faces, fine textures, and motion for smearing or lost detail. For progressive-only viewing, deinterlace the copy with a suitable video workflow. VHS-Decode documentation names bwdif and QTGMC as post-processing options; suitability and software versions can vary.
CCI lists a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 50 dB among example characteristics of a “decent and reasonably priced” TBC. That figure describes a device property cited in the 2020 bulletin, not a measured reduction in noise on a VHS tape.
Monitor the transfer and check the complete file
- Monitor both picture and sound during capture.
- Check dropped-frame indicators in the capture software, if available.
- Confirm the file contains the expected tape segments.
- Play the resulting file from beginning to end. CCI cautions that brief spot checks can miss transfer problems.
These checks help catch capture faults that software cleanup cannot fix, such as missing sections, dropped frames, or audio problems.
