Install the latest available Switch 2 update for Valheim, then retest the same location and activity. Iron Gate’s September 2026 patches added Switch 2 GPU improvements and fixed a terrain-duplication bug linked to performance loss. Those fixes are worth applying, but they do not promise a particular frame rate or eliminate every slowdown.
Update Valheim before changing settings
- On your Switch 2, check for an available update for Valheim and install it.
- Reopen the game and note where or when the slowdown occurs.
- Return to that same area and repeat the same activity. Comparing like with like makes it easier to tell whether the update changed the issue.
Iron Gate’s Patch 1.0.14 notes, dated September 17, 2026, list “Multiple GPU performance improvements on Switch 2.” Its Patch 1.0.15 notes, dated September 18, say the developer fixed an issue that could duplicate terrain and cause a loss of performance. The notes do not quantify the improvement or guarantee that every performance problem will be resolved. Read the Patch 1.0.14 notes and read the Patch 1.0.15 notes.

Retest the same situation to identify stuttering
Performance can appear different in different areas or activities, so a before-and-after comparison is most useful when you keep the situation consistent. If the stutter happens during a particular task, repeat that task after updating. If it happens in a specific place, revisit that place. Record whether the problem is occasional or repeatable, and whether it occurs in solo or online play; those observations can help distinguish a local rendering issue from a problem tied to a particular scenario.

What to know about graphics modes and “best settings”
There is not enough official Switch 2 information to name a universally best graphics mode or give a supported resolution or frame-rate target. Iron Gate’s FAQ lists Switch 2 as a platform, but the Performance, Balanced, and Quality resolution and frame-rate figures on that page are for Xbox Series X and Series S. They should not be treated as Switch 2 specifications. Check Iron Gate’s FAQ for its platform information.
Patch 1.0.14 does mention a Balanced graphics preset in connection with a specific menu and display issue, but that mention does not establish the complete Switch 2 preset list or which mode performs best. If your current game build offers graphics options, check the mode names and descriptions shown in the game itself. Change one option at a time, then repeat the same test situation so you can judge the effect rather than guessing.

Separate display and menu glitches from general slowdown
Patch 1.0.14 also fixed a narrower Switch 2 issue: during online multiplayer with the Balanced preset, TV output could switch between 120 Hz and 60 Hz while the virtual keyboard or home menu was open, causing a black screen when entering or leaving those menus. This is a documented display/menu scenario, not evidence that every stutter or frame-rate problem has the same cause. If you encountered that black-screen behavior, make sure the patch is installed and see whether it recurs in the same circumstances. Iron Gate’s notes describe the fix.

In the official material cited here, Iron Gate has not stated a Switch 2 resolution target or a measured frame rate. The game launched for Switch 2 on September 9, 2026, according to Nintendo UK’s listing; Iron Gate’s June 7, 2026 announcement also named that release date. Neither date nor the patch notes should be read as a performance specification.

For the same reason, advice that promises a specific FPS, resolution, or guaranteed improvement from a particular mode goes beyond what those official sources establish.

The official sources cited here do not establish a performance benefit from a different dock, controller, memory card, cooler, DNS setting, or MTU setting. Treat those as unverified suggestions, not proven fixes for Valheim on Switch 2. Crossplay is supported, but that feature is not itself a performance fix. Iron Gate’s release announcement describes crossplay support.
