How to Improve User Retention in a Crypto App Without Token Rewards

Crypto app retention is built on useful first tasks, clear transaction states, trust, and reasons to return—not rewards alone. Find drop-offs by cohort and investigate them with users.

Improve retention by helping people complete a useful task quickly, making transaction status and security understandable, and giving them a practical reason to return. Then use cohort data to find where people stop and user research to learn why. No design tactic guarantees a retention lift across crypto apps: the evidence here is a set of design recommendations, a small onboarding study, and an industry report—not a controlled evaluation of every intervention.

Start with a useful first task

Retention begins with whether the app helps someone get something done. Identify the first task that delivers a meaningful outcome—such as making a payment, checking a balance, or completing another core job—and make that path easy to understand. Remove steps that add friction without protecting the user or improving the result.

Bitcoin Design’s Usage life cycle guide recommends letting people solve a problem while they learn the product. It warns, “If the first use is frustrating, users are less likely to use your product again—or to recommend it.” That is useful design guidance, not a measured retention benchmark.

Teach only what the task requires

Introduce crypto concepts when they matter to the action at hand. A long tutorial before a user sees any value can delay their first success; skipping explanations that affect a consequential decision can leave them unable to judge what they are approving. Pair task-focused onboarding with clear information about what a transaction does and what risks or fees apply.

A 2021 peer-reviewed study by Fröhlich, Kobiella, Schmidt, and Alt examined onboarding for two cryptocurrency wallets. It used two separate samples of 16 participants each: one for interviews and one for user testing. The authors suggest well-designed onboarding can improve perceived usability for first-time users. The samples were relatively young and well educated, and perceived usability is not the same as long-term retention; the study does not establish a general retention effect.

Make actions and transaction status easy to understand

People should be able to tell what the app is doing, what they are being asked to approve, and what happens next. Ethereum.org’s Web3 interface design guidance recommends timely feedback, clear terminology, visible network context, short common actions, and control from within the app. It also advises: “If there are multiple steps to a process, show each step.”

  • Show the active network. Make the relevant network visible where a user chooses or confirms an action; do not make them infer it from technical labels.
  • Explain pending states. Say which action is waiting, what confirmation is needed, and what the user can do while it is pending. If a wait is expected, communicate that rather than leaving the screen apparently frozen.
  • Keep the path focused. Group related actions and shorten common flows, while retaining steps that help prevent mistakes or support informed consent.
  • Make errors actionable. Explain what failed in plain language and offer a safe next step, rather than presenting only a generic error.

These are interface practices, not proof that a specific redesign will increase retention. Their value is that they reduce avoidable uncertainty during tasks users may need to repeat.

Earn trust with concrete security and risk explanations

Trust is part of the product experience, not just a claim on a marketing page. Explain the app’s custody model, relevant security features, recovery options, and what a user could lose in terms they can understand. If a user cannot recover access or reverse an action, say so plainly. Surface audits and their scope where relevant, but do not imply that an audit removes risk.

Bitcoin Design’s guide reflects questions users may have: “Can I trust this product and its creators?”, “Can I get out if something goes wrong?”, and “What can I lose?” Ethereum.org likewise recommends making security and trust information, including possible risks, visible. Put answers close to the decision they inform, not only in documentation users are unlikely to find during a transaction.

Give people a practical reason to return

A recurring job, real-world benefit, or enjoyable experience can make an app useful beyond its first session. Think about what people will want to do again and whether the product makes that repeat task genuinely easier. Loyalty benefits or discounts may support practical value; they are different from paying users to stay through a token whose appeal depends mainly on a changing market price.

Onchain’s 2025 report argues that apps relying solely on speculative token incentives saw users drop off when token values declined, and points to intrinsic utility and enjoyable experiences as stronger foundations. Treat this as the report’s analysis, not a universal rule or a controlled comparison of every incentive model. Any benefit offered to users also needs a sustainable business model; a reward that cannot be maintained may create an expectation the product cannot meet.

What the industry figures do—and do not—show

Onchain reports that 25.91% of 1,005 surveyed Web3 users regularly used crypto payment apps. That is a result from Onchain’s 2025 global survey, not an estimate that should be applied to all crypto users or markets.

The same report associates retention rates as high as 70% with practical restaurant discounts in blockchain loyalty programs, including the Blackbird example. The reported material does not establish the exact denominator, measurement window, or causal identification, so the figure should not be treated as an independently verified outcome or a forecast for another app.

Find the point of departure, then test a change

Map the journey from first exposure through onboarding, the first successful task, and regular use. Use event and cohort analysis to identify where people stop progressing; then interview users or observe them completing the task. A dashboard can show when a cohort drops away, but it cannot by itself explain whether the cause was confusing language, a trust concern, an unreliable transaction, or a mismatch between the app and the user’s goal.

  1. Define the outcome. Choose a meaningful behavior that represents successful use, not merely an app open or wallet connection.
  2. Map the path. Record the steps from acquisition to that outcome and the events that indicate completion or abandonment.
  3. Segment cohorts. Compare groups by acquisition source and, where relevant, exposure to incentives. Avoid treating people with different entry paths as one uniform audience.
  4. Investigate the drop-off. Ask affected users about the task, or watch them attempt it. Use the observed friction to form a specific change rather than guessing from a chart.
  5. Compare before and after. Define the cohort and time window before evaluating a change. Set a baseline from your own product data; the sources here do not establish a universal target retention rate.

When comparing possible interventions, ask whether each improves a real user task, reduces unnecessary effort to first success, clarifies transactions, protects security and recovery, supports repeat use, depends on speculative payouts, and can be sustained by the business. Onchain says its own analysis considers onboarding and UX, incentive design, real-world utility, compliance factors, and revenue models; those dimensions are useful prompts, not a substitute for evidence from your users.

What the evidence supports

The guidance supports a practical approach: deliver first-use value, make state and network context legible, explain security and risk, and build repeat utility. It does not establish a guaranteed retention lift for any individual tactic. Ethereum.org’s recommendations are design guidance, Bitcoin Design’s lifecycle material is guidance rather than a dated trial, the 2021 wallet study is small, and Onchain’s 2025 report combines surveys, analytics, case studies, and comparative research in a fast-changing market. Use those sources to shape hypotheses, then judge results against your own cohorts and user research.
