Resolution, upscaling, frame generation, and ray tracing can affect performance differently—and available options depend on your hardware.
First, confirm which version and settings you have
This guide focuses on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a free upgrade for existing owners on supported platforms, with enhanced visuals and performance and PC path tracing. Older guides may refer to different menus or feature support, so confirm your installed build before following menu-specific advice. The official Remastered announcement and news are the place to check current release details.

The PC notes list native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading, Path Tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4, and Intel XeSS 2.0. Set a baseline before changing anything
Choose a repeatable scene you can revisit, such as the same location and camera view, and record what the game is doing before you tune it. A single frame-rate reading in a crowded or changing scene is not a reliable comparison: CD PROJEKT RED says performance varies with scene, system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution.

- Record your output resolution and graphics preset.
- Note whether ray tracing or path tracing is enabled.
- Record the upscaler, its quality mode, and whether frame generation is on.
- Observe frame rate in the same scene after allowing the view to settle.
- Look for uneven frame delivery as well as the displayed frame rate.
- Pay attention to image stability and fine detail, not just speed.
Change one major setting at a time, return to the same scene, and compare. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped your target without needlessly reducing image quality. It does not guarantee a particular frame-rate gain.
Check the official requirements for your target resolution and mode
Use CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC system requirements to assess your hardware. The developer notes that higher output resolutions significantly affect FPS, and that performance changes with settings and scene. Compare the requirements relevant to your intended resolution and rendering mode rather than relying on a generic preset label or an old minimum-spec list. The live page is the authority for exact hardware tiers; verify its current table rather than copying figures from an older guide.
There is an important distinction in the developer’s expected-performance configurations: RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing use DLSS, FSR, or XeSS set to Auto. Path Tracing also uses Frame Generation. Other listed configurations use native resolution with upscaling off. These targets therefore are not directly comparable as if all were measured at native rendering with identical features enabled.

Test resolution and upscaling before lowering everything
If performance is below your target, first compare a lower output resolution or an upscaler in an appropriate quality mode. Check both frame delivery and the stability of edges, foliage, and fine detail in your repeatable scene. An upscaler can change the rendering path and image character, so the right quality mode is the one that meets your performance need without introducing visual instability you find distracting.
Choose only an upscaling option supported by your hardware and the current game build. The Remastered notes specify that FSR 4 works on AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer; unsupported GPUs use FSR 2. DLSS and XeSS support likewise depends on compatible hardware and game settings. A feature name in a patch note does not mean every GPU can use every option.
Frame generation is another hardware- and settings-dependent path listed in the current notes: FSR 4 includes Frame Generation, and XeSS 2.0 includes Frame Generation and Low Latency. Test it as a distinct change rather than assuming its result is equivalent to a higher native rendering rate; compare the same scene and judge visual stability as well as displayed FPS.

Reduce costly ray tracing only if the earlier checks are not enough
If resolution and supported upscaling do not bring performance to a usable level, test ray-tracing settings next. Path tracing is a demanding rendering mode, and the developer’s expected Path Tracing configuration includes both upscaling and Frame Generation. If you prioritize a steadier frame rate over those effects, compare a less demanding ray-tracing configuration or turn ray tracing off, then revisit the same scene and assess the image trade-off.
There is no universally best preset established for every system. A useful comparison should keep the scene and display target fixed and consider frame-time consistency, image quality, feature compatibility, and convenience together. Historical guides for the 2015 release can illustrate the kinds of graphics settings the game once exposed, but should not be treated as a current Remastered menu guide.

CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements. Its current support page also says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported: the game may continue to run, but the developer no longer develops or tests on that operating system and cannot guarantee compatibility or performance. Keep graphics hardware on official manufacturer updates as well, and verify the support page for current compatibility guidance.

Consider a hardware or streaming change only after tuning
A GPU upgrade is relevant if you specifically want demanding ray-traced modes and your hardware does not meet the live requirements. NVIDIA reports up to 245 FPS at 4K and up to 320 FPS at 1440p on an RTX 5080 in its stated path-tracing configuration using DLSS 4.5 and Multi Frame Generation. Those are NVIDIA vendor-reported figures, not independent benchmark results, and they should not be treated as a forecast for another system or configuration.
For owners without a capable local RTX system, CD PROJEKT RED says the Remastered game can be streamed through GeForce NOW. Catalog availability, membership, regional access, and network requirements can change, so check the service for your location before relying on it. Streaming is an alternative to local hardware changes, not a graphics setting that improves performance on the PC itself.
