Start with SteamOS updates and a restart
For system-wide instability or a sudden performance dip, install available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck. Valve recommends this as an early software troubleshooting step in its Steam Deck software guide. SteamOS menus can change over time, so look for the current system update controls in the Settings interface.

If applications remain unstable, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart, and test again. This helps determine whether a background application is contributing to the problem before you change deeper system settings.

If issues continue after updating and restarting, Valve lists opting into the Steam Deck Beta as a possible way to try changes not yet in the stable release. A beta is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix. You can also consult SteamOS discussions or contact Steam Support.

Work out whether one game or the whole Deck is affected
Test more than one game if you can. If only one title crashes or runs poorly, focus on that game’s compatibility, settings, and installed files. If multiple games or applications show problems, keep working through system-level checks instead.
Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating
On the game’s Steam Store page, review its Steam Deck compatibility rating and any requirements or limitations Valve lists. The categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Playable can mean that manual configuration is needed; Unknown means Valve has not tested the title, not that it is confirmed incompatible. Valve explains the ratings in its software guide.

Try a different Proton compatibility tool when appropriate
If the title’s compatibility setup may be causing trouble, open its Library properties, select Compatibility, and try forcing a Steam Play compatibility tool. Valve suggests trying the latest Proton version. The result can vary by game and version, so retest the title after changing the setting.
Before switching, note that Steam may download the Windows build of a game if you had installed only its Linux version. That download can take time and use storage or bandwidth.

Reduce demanding graphics settings
Lower the graphics preset or reduce demanding individual settings, then test the game. Resolution, settings, available memory, background applications, and the game’s requirements can all affect performance; Valve discusses these factors in its general PC performance guidance. That guidance is not a Steam Deck-specific diagnosis, and no particular frame-rate gain is guaranteed.

- Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Open its Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
Valve says verification may take several minutes. A file can fail verification without indicating a serious problem if it is a local configuration file that should not be replaced. See Valve’s file verification instructions.
Set refresh rate within your display’s limits
Valve lists the Steam Deck LCD display at a maximum of 60 Hz and the OLED display at a maximum of 90 Hz. Setting an application above the limit for your model will not improve performance and may drain the battery faster, according to Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

Frame-rate and refresh-rate choices are per-game trade-offs: try settings your model supports and judge the result in the game you are playing. No single refresh-rate setting is established as a universal way to prevent crashes.
Check the dock only when the problem involves an external display
If the issue appears only when the Deck is docked, check Steam’s display settings, the monitor’s selected input, the cable, dock or hub compatibility, and the game’s own display settings. High-resolution or high-refresh-rate external setups can be sensitive to what the display and cable support; Valve’s docking guide also notes that in-game adjustments may be needed for graphics or image-quality issues.
A compatible USB-C dock or cable is relevant to this external-display troubleshooting branch. Valve’s guidance does not establish that buying a dock improves handheld frame rates or prevents crashes when you are not using an external display.

Use recovery options only after simpler checks
If updates, restarts, app isolation, game-specific checks, and file verification have not resolved the issue, Valve documents rollback, repair, factory reset, erase-user-data, and re-imaging options in its SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guide. Their effects differ: Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content, while a full re-image replaces user information, installed games, applications, or operating systems with stock SteamOS. Erasing user data is explicitly destructive.
Read the description of the exact recovery operation before selecting it, and protect any local data you need. If the problem remains unresolved, contact Steam Support.
