The reliable way to improve Starfield performance with graphics and planet mods is to establish a clean, documented baseline before changing the mod list. Check the PC and storage first, then drivers, overlays, game files, GPU selection and power settings. After that, lower display quality one setting at a time, isolate recently installed mods, and install texture replacements only after checking their profile notes and backing up the original archives. No independent test establishes a universal FPS gain for planet mods, so every change should be judged on your own hardware in the same repeatable scenario.
Identify the problem before changing anything
“Poor performance” can describe several different failures. A low average frame rate, a brief traversal hitch, slow loading, texture pop-in and a crash have different likely causes. Write down which symptom you are seeing, where it happens, and whether it began immediately after a particular mod, update or driver change.

| Symptom | What it usually tells you to investigate first | Useful first comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Low frame rate everywhere | Hardware limits, graphics quality, resolution, driver state or the wrong GPU being selected | Compare the same scene with all optional mods disabled and a lower Display quality setting |
| Short stutters while moving or landing | Asset streaming, storage speed, texture memory pressure or a mod that changes large archives | Repeat the same route after disabling the newest graphics or planet mod |
| Long loads | Installation on a hard disk, background applications, storage contention or unusually large replacements | Compare a save on an SSD with the same save on the previous installation, if possible |
| Texture pop-in or missing surfaces | Incorrect deployment path, loose-file configuration, missing dependency or a profile that is not compatible with the current game version | Check the mod’s required path and INI instructions before changing graphics quality |
| Crashes, especially after adding a mod | Mod incompatibility, damaged files, driver problems, overlays or insufficient system headroom | Disable or remove the recent Creations/mods and verify the game without them |
Keep a short log containing the game version, GPU driver version, resolution, Display settings, active mods, profile used and the location or activity used for each test. Change one variable at a time. That does not create a formal benchmark, but it prevents two simultaneous changes from hiding the cause of a problem.

Run Bethesda’s PC baseline checklist
Bethesda’s performance guidance says that most performance issues can be attributed to hardware. Its checklist is therefore the correct starting point even when the visible symptom appeared after a graphics or planet mod was installed.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
- Confirm the published system requirements. Check that the processor, graphics card, memory and operating-system version meet the requirements for your edition of Starfield. A mod cannot make hardware below the game’s baseline behave like a faster system.
- Install the game on an SSD. Bethesda specifically recommends an SSD instead of a hard disk for PC troubleshooting. An SSD can reduce loading and asset-streaming delays, but it will not automatically raise a GPU-bound frame rate or repair an inefficient mod.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver for the GPU manufacturer and restart Windows. If the issue started directly after a driver update, record that fact before attempting a rollback or clean installation; the available guidance does not prescribe a particular rollback version.
- Disable overlays temporarily. Turn off Steam Overlay and Xbox Game Bar while diagnosing the issue. Overlays add another variable to crashes and frame pacing. Re-enable them only after the unmodded or reduced-mod test is stable.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-verification function in the launcher or store client that installed Starfield. Verification can restore changed or missing official files, but it may also overwrite a direct archive replacement, so back up mod files and note your installation state first.
- Confirm the active GPU. On a laptop or a system with more than one GPU, make sure Starfield is using the primary, higher-performance adapter rather than an integrated device. Check the operating system’s graphics preference and the GPU control panel, then confirm the selected adapter while the game is running.
- Check the power profile. A laptop running on a battery-saving plan can reduce clocks and produce stutter. Test while connected to AC power with a performance-oriented power setting, while observing normal temperature and fan limits.
- Close unused applications. Bethesda recommends closing applications that are not in use when poor performance is contributing to crashes. Shut down browsers, recording tools and other programs that consume memory or GPU time for the duration of the test.
Restart the computer after completing the driver, overlay or power changes. Then launch with the smallest practical mod set and repeat the same activity you logged earlier. If the baseline is already unstable, adding another planet or texture replacement makes the result harder to interpret.
Use Display settings as a controlled test
Bethesda directs players to Settings > Display when poor performance is causing crashes and recommends lowering graphics quality. The guidance does not rank individual options or publish a guaranteed FPS gain for any one switch, so avoid claims such as “this setting always gives 20 FPS.”
- Record the current resolution, quality preset and any individual changes.
- Lower the overall graphics quality once and reproduce the same scene.
- If the symptom improves, restore the preset and lower one individual option at a time, testing after each change.
- Keep the change that solves the symptom without sacrificing more image quality than necessary.
- Repeat the test in a second location before deciding that the change is generally effective.
For a frame-rate problem, compare the same camera view, activity and approximate time in the same save. For traversal hitching, follow the same route at the same speed. For crashes, repeat the action that previously caused the crash rather than relying on a short menu session. Record whether the problem is gone, less frequent or unchanged; “feels smoother” without a repeatable scenario is not enough to identify a cause.

Isolate graphics and planet mods safely
Creations and other mods can cause in-game issues in some cases. Bethesda recommends disabling or removing them while investigating frequent crashes. This is an isolation method, not proof that every mod harms performance.
For a crash that began after an installation
- Exit the game completely and make a copy of your saves.
- Disable the most recently added Creation or mod, or remove it if the manager cannot disable it cleanly.
- Launch with the remaining list unchanged and reproduce the failure.
- If the crash stops, re-enable one item at a time, starting with dependencies and then the affected graphics or planet mod.
- When the crash returns, record the exact combination and consult that mod’s compatibility notes rather than adding another patch at random.
For stutter or long traversal hitches
Keep gameplay settings constant and remove only the newest asset-heavy replacement first. Test the same route with the original archives, then with the replacement restored. This distinguishes a texture archive or streaming issue from a general GPU or storage limit. Do not remove several visual mods at once if you want to identify the responsible file.
For a clean comparison
Use a save and location that do not depend on a removed quest or world-space mod. A missing dependency can create a new error that looks like a performance problem. Once the unmodded or reduced list is stable, add back one mod, launch, and test before adding the next.
Choose texture profiles by memory and resolution, not by the largest number
The reviewed texture project offers five profiles: 2048 A, 2048 B, 2048 C, 4096 A and 4096 B. The page describes different image-quality and memory tradeoffs, but it does not provide a universal FPS table for the profiles. A higher nominal texture resolution can increase memory pressure and may produce more stutter on a card with limited VRAM; it is not automatically the smoothest choice.
| Profile family | Profiles listed | How to decide | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2048 | 2048 A, 2048 B, 2048 C | Use the author’s current compatibility notes, your GPU memory, target resolution and preferred image quality. Treat the three variants as separate tests rather than assuming C is universally best. | No cross-hardware FPS gain or exact VRAM requirement is stated. |
| 4096 | 4096 A, 4096 B | Consider only when your GPU has adequate memory for the rest of the game and mod list at your target resolution. Test for streaming hitches after installation. | No universal performance result, archive-size comparison or recommended GPU tier is stated. |
The project page describes a processed library of 130,610 textures and a source baseline of 88.9 GB uncompressed. Those are the author’s descriptions of that mod project, not independently audited statistics for the whole game. Treat the archive size as a storage and backup concern, not as a promise of frame-rate improvement.

Back up archives before a direct texture replacement
If a texture page instructs you to replace BA2 archives directly, make a reversible copy first. Preserve the original filenames and folder structure in a separate location with enough free storage. Record which profile was installed and when.
- Close Starfield and the mod manager.
- Copy the original BA2 texture archives to a backup folder outside the game directory.
- Install only the profile specified by the mod’s current instructions.
- Launch and test the same save, location and route used for the baseline.
- If the game becomes unstable or the visual result is wrong, restore the original archives or use the manager’s deployment undo function before trying another profile.
Do not keep multiple profiles’ files mixed together. A partial replacement can leave a game loading assets from different versions, making both visual defects and stutter difficult to diagnose. Verify the mod’s compatibility notes after a game update because archive names, supported formats and required patches can change.
Verify the installation path and manager configuration
Starfield can use a secondary data location at Documents\My Games\Starfield\Data. Vortex documentation notes that this folder can override the regular game Data folder in some situations. A mod that appears installed but has no effect may be in the wrong location; a mod that overrides another unexpectedly may be deployed in the secondary location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck these items for every graphics or planet mod
- Read the mod-specific path instructions. Do not assume every archive, mesh, texture or plugin belongs in the same folder.
- Inspect the deployed location. Confirm whether the files are in the game’s regular
Datadirectory or the secondary Documents path and whether that location is intended for your installation. - Apply required INI entries. Some loose-file configurations require INI changes. Use the exact entries supplied by the mod author and keep a copy of the original INI files.
- Check dependencies and game-version notes. A missing framework or an outdated plugin can cause crashes or missing assets that look like performance failures.
- Use manager sorting only where supported. Vortex documentation describes drag-and-drop deployment or LOOT sorting in supported configurations, but no universal load order exists for every graphics and planet-mod combination.
- Deploy after changing the list. Re-deploy or refresh the manager, then verify that the expected files exist in the active location.
When two mods alter the same archive or world-space asset, the later or higher-priority file can determine what you see. Resolve that conflict using the individual authors’ instructions. A generic load-order recipe is not supported by the available documentation.
What one texture test does—and does not—prove
The texture page reports a specific test rig: an Intel CC150 processor, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER with 4 GB of GDDR6, 32 GB of DDR4 memory, an M.2 NVMe SSD and a 1080p target resolution. The author says that replacing the archives with the 2048 C profile completely eradicated travel-lag spikes in a described late-game and outpost scenario.
That is an author-reported result for one configuration and one activity. It is not independent validation, and it does not show that planet mods broadly improve FPS or remove stutter on another GPU, resolution, storage device or game version. Use the setup as a useful comparison point, not as a guarantee. A 4 GB graphics card may respond very differently from a card with substantially more memory, and a system with a hard disk may have a different bottleneck from the NVMe-equipped test machine.

The frame rate remains low with mods disabled
Recheck the active GPU, driver, power plan, resolution and Display quality. Confirm that the game is on an SSD and that unused applications are closed. If lowering quality helps, the system is likely limited by rendering workload or available graphics memory; keep the lowest change that meets your visual target. If it does not help, verify the installation and requirements before adding mods again.
Only traversal stutter remains
Test the storage device and the texture profile. Restore the original archives, then try one lower-memory profile if the mod author offers one. Keep resolution and other settings unchanged. If the hitch occurs only with a particular replacement, leave that profile out or use the author’s compatible alternative rather than raising every other setting.

The game crashes after adding a planet mod
Disable the new mod and its optional components, verify files if official archives may have been changed, and confirm dependencies and INI entries. Reintroduce components one by one. If the crash persists with all mods removed, return to Bethesda’s hardware, driver, overlay and power checks.
Textures are missing or unchanged
Inspect the regular and secondary Data folders, confirm deployment, check loose-file INI requirements and make sure another archive is not overriding the replacement. A performance setting change will not fix a file that is never being loaded.
Loading is slow but frame rate is acceptable
Prioritize moving the installation from a hard disk to an SSD, closing background applications and checking storage capacity and activity. Do not assume a larger texture profile will help; additional asset data can increase storage and memory pressure.
A repeatable workflow for rebuilding your mod list
Use this sequence whenever a game update, driver update or new visual mod changes performance:
- Back up saves, original BA2 archives and INI files.
- Write down the current game version, driver, resolution, Display settings and active mod list.
- Run the Bethesda baseline with overlays and unused applications closed.
- Test the unmodded or minimally modded game in a saved, repeatable scenario.
- Apply one Display change or one mod-profile change, then repeat the same scenario.
- Check deployment paths, dependencies and INI requirements before adding another mod.
- Keep the result only if it improves the target symptom without introducing crashes, missing assets or unacceptable image-quality loss.
This workflow is slower than installing several replacements at once, but it gives you a known-good recovery point. Keep the final working configuration written down so a future update can be compared with the same conditions.
What performance claims you can safely make
There is no independently verified statistic in the available material for FPS gains from planet mods, graphics mods in general or a universal load order. Bethesda’s pages are troubleshooting guidance rather than controlled tests, and the texture project’s figures and travel-lag result are authored claims from its listing. Performance depends on the specific PC, game version, resolution, graphics settings, storage and complete mod list.
Accordingly, report your own result narrowly: name the profile, GPU memory, resolution, location and symptom tested. “The 2048 C profile removed travel hitches in my late-game outpost route” is a reproducible personal observation; “planet mods improve Starfield performance” is too broad without cross-hardware testing.
