Start by separating a slow Wi‑Fi connection from a slow satellite link. Stop other household activity, run a speed test beside the router, and repeat it over Ethernet if your equipment supports a wired connection. If Ethernet is fast but Wi‑Fi is slow, work on router placement, radio bands, interference, or coverage. If both tests are poor, check your data allowance, weather, obstructions, cabling, equipment alerts, and provider outages before buying anything.
Satellite performance varies by plan, equipment generation, location, weather, and network load. Use your provider’s app, account page, and support instructions for the exact hardware and service you have.

1. Measure the problem before changing anything
A single speed test cannot tell you whether the satellite service or your home network is responsible. Record enough detail to compare like with like:
Recommended Free Tools
- date and exact time;
- download speed, upload speed, and latency or ping if the test reports it;
- the device and browser or app used;
- whether the device was on Wi‑Fi or Ethernet;
- your distance from the router;
- how many other devices were online and what they were doing;
- weather conditions and any provider-app alerts.
First pause video streams, game downloads, cloud backups, security-camera uploads, and other heavy use throughout the home. Viasat specifically recommends stopping household usage before testing and notes that evening peak periods can be slower. Run two or three tests a few minutes apart, then repeat at a different time if the problem appears only in the evening. Its slow-speed guidance explains why competing use and peak-time congestion can change the result.

Test close to the router
Use the affected device in the same room as the router, with a clear path if possible. This reduces the chance that distance, walls, or interference is being mistaken for a satellite problem. Do not move the terminal or dish just to perform this test; move only the client device.
Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet
If the router or terminal provides Ethernet, connect a compatible cable directly and repeat the test. Check that any Ethernet adapter, extension, or connector is fully seated. A Cat6 cable can be used as a diagnostic accessory when its plugs and speed rating match your equipment, but a cable cannot repair an obstruction, weather loss, plan restriction, or provider congestion.
Interpret the comparison this way:
| Test result | Most useful next branch |
|---|---|
| Ethernet is substantially faster than Wi‑Fi | Investigate router location, band selection, interference, coverage, and local device load. |
| Ethernet and nearby Wi‑Fi are both slow | Check plan data, provider notices, weather, terminal view, cables, power, and the provider network. |
| Only one device is slow | Check that device’s software, background transfers, VPN, signal strength, and network settings. |
| Performance falls at predictable busy times | Compare off-peak tests and review the provider’s congestion or prioritization policy. |
| Dropouts track storms or heavy snow | Inspect weather conditions and wait for them to clear before treating the event as a hardware fault. |
Use the same speed-test service and, as much as possible, the same device and setup for each comparison. The result is most useful as a pattern, not as a promise that every test should match a particular advertised number. Record whether the connection fully disconnects or merely slows: those point to different problems and give support a clearer starting point.

2. Check your plan and account status
Satellite plans do not all handle data use in the same way. Open the provider account or app and check current usage, the high-speed allowance, any remaining priority data, and notices about service interruptions. Do not assume that an “unlimited” label means the same speed under every condition.
Viasat data and prioritization
Viasat describes Standard Data allowances and possible peak-time prioritization for certain plans. The exact allowance and terms depend on the plan and location, and details for its Unleashed service depend on local availability. Read the terms shown in your own account rather than applying another customer’s limit. Its connectivity troubleshooting page also warns that other users and busy periods can reduce a speed-test result.
Hughesnet data policy
Hughesnet says that exceeding a plan’s data allowance may result in slower speeds during high-traffic periods. Check the usage meter and the specific policy attached to your plan in the Hughesnet support FAQ. If the slowdown began soon after the allowance was consumed, changing Wi‑Fi settings will not restore the plan’s priority treatment.
Policies are not interchangeable between providers or even between plans from the same provider. Check the plan name and its current account terms, including what happens after an allowance is used and whether prioritization applies at busy times. If your tests are consistently slower only during peak periods, but improve outside them, include both sets of timestamps when contacting support rather than assuming a router fault.

Look for an outage banner, terminal warning, or maintenance notice before resetting equipment repeatedly. Save a screenshot or note the alert wording and time. A provider-side event can affect both Ethernet and Wi‑Fi, so local network changes will not solve it.
3. Inspect the terminal’s view, weather, and connections
Obstructions and line of sight
Trees, new construction, roof features, snow accumulation, and other objects can interrupt the terminal’s view. Starlink’s intermittent-service guidance lists installation and obstruction checks alongside weather and physical connections. Use the provider app’s obstruction or visibility view if your equipment offers one. Look for a pattern such as short, repeated drops at regular intervals; that pattern can indicate a partial obstruction rather than a general speed issue.

Do not climb onto a roof or alter a mount while troubleshooting. If the terminal needs repositioning, use the provider’s installation or support route and follow its safety instructions.
Weather at your location and at the gateway
Weather effects are real but should be described narrowly. Viasat states: “A cloudy sky, light rain, or fog shouldn’t impact your internet service.” It also says very severe thunderstorms or heavy snowstorms may cause a temporary connection loss. See its weather-impact guidance.
Hughesnet similarly says heavy thunderstorms or heavy snow or ice storms can produce intermittent connectivity or a temporary loss. Conditions at the provider’s gateway can matter even when the sky above your home is clear; its support material explains this possibility in the weather guidance. If service returns after the storm passes, record the timing rather than replacing equipment immediately.
A weather-related interruption should have a plausible timing pattern: note when the storm began, when service dropped, and whether it recovered as conditions improved. Do not dismiss persistent problems as “weather” just because a storm occurred recently. If connectivity remains unreliable after conditions clear, continue the equipment and account checks and share the timeline with support.
Cables, power, and indicators
With the system powered down only as directed by the provider, inspect visible cable runs for cuts, crushing, loose connectors, or water intrusion. Confirm that the terminal, modem, and router have power and that their status lights match the normal pattern in the equipment guide. Starlink’s troubleshooting checklist includes physical connections, power, and cables; Hughesnet advises checking modem lights and cable seating.
Avoid repeatedly unplugging or resetting equipment without checking the provider’s restart instructions. A reboot may be a useful troubleshooting step when support recommends it, but it will not remove an obstruction, change a plan’s data policy, or fix a provider-side outage. If a cable is damaged or a connector is not accessible safely, ask the provider how to arrange an inspection instead of attempting a risky repair.

4. Improve Wi‑Fi when the wired test proves it is the bottleneck
Reposition the router
Place the router centrally, in the open and elevated from the floor rather than inside a cabinet or behind a television. Viasat’s instruction is direct: “Place your router in a central location to improve Wi‑Fi coverage.” Keep it away from large metal objects, thick masonry, appliances that emit interference, and dense bundles of cables. Re-test from the room where the slowdown matters; a faster result beside the router is not proof that every room is fixed.
Choose the appropriate band
If your router supports separate bands, use 5 GHz for nearby high-bandwidth devices such as a modern laptop, television, or game console. Starlink advises band separation where supported and recommends 5 GHz for high-bandwidth devices. The 5 GHz band can deliver higher local throughput but generally reaches through walls less effectively than a lower-frequency band, so a distant device may work better on the other available band. Change one device or band at a time and test again.

Reduce local competition
Pause large downloads, video uploads, cloud synchronization, and camera backups while testing. Schedule them outside the period when you need low latency. If your router has device-priority or quality-of-service controls, use them cautiously: prioritizing one stream cannot create more satellite capacity, and an incorrect rule can make other devices appear broken.
Consider replacement Wi‑Fi hardware only after isolation
A replacement router or mesh system is reasonable only when Ethernet is consistently good but Wi‑Fi remains poor, coverage is inadequate, or the existing router cannot provide the needed bands or ports. Choose hardware compatible with the provider’s modem or terminal and with your subscription’s maximum service rate. A new router cannot correct plan throttling, an obstructed terminal, bad weather, or upstream congestion.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before spending money, confirm that the provider permits or supports the router setup you plan to use, and check that the equipment has the ports and bands your devices need. There is no universally recommended router or cable for every satellite installation: compatibility varies by equipment and service. An Ethernet cable is useful here as a test, not as a guaranteed speed upgrade; verify its connector and compatibility with your terminal, router, or adapter before buying one.
5. Account for VPNs, devices, and household traffic
VPN overhead
Test once with the VPN disconnected, if your security policy permits, and once with it enabled under the same conditions. Hughesnet states that VPN use “will reduce the speed of your internet service by up to 70%.” That is the provider’s stated maximum, not a guaranteed reduction for every VPN, server, protocol, or device. A VPN can also add latency when its server is geographically distant or overloaded.
Device-level causes
Check the slow device for operating-system updates, game downloads, cloud-drive synchronization, malware scans, browser extensions, and applications uploading in the background. Compare a second device on the same Wi‑Fi network. If only one device is affected, reset its network connection or update its network driver according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than changing the satellite installation.
Interference and concurrent connections
Starlink identifies personal devices, interference, power, cables, field of view, weather, and concurrent connections as factors that can affect performance. This is why a speed test should state how many devices were active and whether the result came from Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. Remove unnecessary variables before concluding that the terminal itself is failing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen you test, do not mistake a household-use pause for a lasting service improvement. If performance improves only while other devices are idle, identify which activity is competing for capacity and consider moving or scheduling it. If one device is the outlier, compare it with another device under the same conditions before changing the router’s settings.
6. Understand latency and what “fast” can mean
Download speed and responsiveness are different measurements. A connection can download a large file quickly yet feel laggy when many devices are competing for capacity, when a VPN adds distance, or when the satellite path is experiencing interruptions.

Starlink’s published specifications state that latency ranges between 25 and 60 ms on land, with 100+ ms in certain remote locations. Those are published specifications, not a guarantee for every user or moment; the same page says performance depends on conditions. See the Starlink specifications for the stated ranges and qualifications.
When diagnosing gaming or video calls, record latency, jitter if available, and packet loss in addition to download speed. A brief dropout can be more disruptive than a modest reduction in throughput. If the problem is visible only in one application, compare that application with a browser test and check its own server status.
There is no single speed-test number that describes every experience. For a video call or game, repeated interruptions and responsiveness may matter more than a large download’s peak rate. For a download, throughput may be the more relevant measure. Include the activity that is failing when you describe the problem, and note whether it fails at the same time as other devices.
7. Use a controlled troubleshooting cycle
Make one change, repeat the same test, and write down the result. This prevents a router move, reboot, weather change, and household pause from being credited with the same improvement.
- Record a baseline. Test at the affected time with other household use noted. Capture download, upload, latency, device, connection type, and weather.
- Pause competing use. Stop streams, backups, uploads, and downloads, then run the test again.
- Test beside the router. Keep the device close to the router and repeat the test to reduce distance and wall effects.
- Test over Ethernet. Use a compatible cable and check adapters or extensions. Compare the wired and wireless results.
- Check the account. Review data use, high-speed or priority terms, provider alerts, and outage notices.
- Inspect the environment. Check the terminal’s obstruction or visibility view, weather, cables, power, and status lights. Follow the provider’s restart procedure if instructed.
- Change local Wi‑Fi settings only when indicated. Put the router centrally and in the open, separate bands if supported, and try 5 GHz for nearby high-bandwidth devices.
- Re-test at the same conditions. Keep timestamps and note exactly which change preceded any improvement.
- Escalate with evidence. Give support the test history, wired-versus-Wi‑Fi comparison, app alerts, weather and time pattern, data status, and checks already completed.
If you are comparing results over several days, label each run with the same details rather than relying on memory. A simple note such as “wired, household idle, 8:15 p.m., storming, alert present” makes it easier to see whether the problem follows the local Wi‑Fi, a busy period, weather, or a service warning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. When to contact the provider
Contact support when both wired and nearby Wi‑Fi tests remain poor after household traffic is paused, when dropouts continue after severe weather clears, when the app reports an obstruction or equipment fault, or when cables, power, and account status look normal but the service still fails. Include the exact times of each outage and whether all devices lost connectivity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ask support to distinguish an account or congestion condition from a terminal, modem, or network fault. Tell them whether the issue is continuous, limited to peak hours, tied to a particular device, or triggered by rain or snow. This pattern is more actionable than saying only that the internet is “slow.”
Have your account and plan details available, along with the test results and any alert text. Mention whether a wired test was possible, what happened after pausing household use, and whether service recovered after weather passed. If you have already restarted equipment, say when and whether it changed the symptom. This helps avoid repeating steps that have already failed and gives support a clearer basis for deciding what to check next.

9. What not to assume
- A higher Wi‑Fi signal bar does not prove that the satellite link is healthy.
- A new Ethernet cable does not remove an obstruction or provider-side congestion.
- Rebooting cannot restore data priority after an allowance has been exceeded.
- Clouds or light rain alone should not automatically be blamed for every dropout; the published provider guidance distinguishes ordinary conditions from severe storms and heavy snow or ice.
- A speed improvement on one device does not prove that the whole home is fixed.
- Provider instructions can differ by plan, region, equipment generation, and service technology, so use the instructions attached to your account.
Nor should you assume that one provider’s plan or equipment rules apply to another service. The useful comparisons are practical ones: the terms on your own plan, the alerts and troubleshooting tools for your hardware, your local obstruction and weather conditions, and whether Ethernet performs differently from Wi‑Fi. These checks can identify the right branch without pretending that unlike plans or service setups have a single apples-to-apples ranking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my satellite internet slow down in the evening?
Household activity and provider congestion can both affect peak-time results. Pause streaming, downloads, backups, and uploads, test again, then compare with an off-peak test. Check your plan’s data and prioritization terms in your provider account; policies differ by plan.
Will rain or clouds make satellite internet disconnect?
Ordinary cloud cover, light rain, or fog should not automatically be blamed for a dropout. Viasat says those conditions should not affect service, while very severe thunderstorms or heavy snowstorms may cause temporary loss. Hughesnet also notes possible interruptions in heavy thunderstorms or heavy snow and ice storms. Weather at a provider gateway can matter even if local skies are clear.
Does using a VPN make satellite internet slower?
It can. Hughesnet says VPN use may reduce speed by up to 70%, which is its stated maximum, not a guaranteed result for every VPN or setup. If permitted by your security requirements, compare tests with the VPN on and off under otherwise similar conditions.
Should I buy a new router to improve satellite internet speed?
Only consider replacement Wi‑Fi equipment after a wired-versus-Wi‑Fi test points to local coverage or router capability. Confirm compatibility with your provider’s modem or terminal and your service setup. A new router will not fix data-policy limits, terminal obstructions, severe weather, or provider congestion.
What does it mean if Ethernet is faster than Wi‑Fi?
It suggests that the local Wi‑Fi path may be the bottleneck. Try placing the router centrally and in the open, reducing nearby interference, and using a supported band suited to the device’s distance. If Ethernet and nearby Wi‑Fi are both slow, continue checking the plan, provider notices, weather, terminal, and connections.
When should I contact satellite internet support?
Contact the provider if both wired and nearby Wi‑Fi tests remain poor with household use paused, if dropouts continue after severe weather clears, or if the app reports an obstruction or equipment fault. Share timestamps, test results, whether all devices lost service, account status, weather, alerts, and the checks you have already tried.
What latency should I expect from Starlink?
Starlink’s published specifications state latency of 25–60 ms on land and 100+ ms in certain remote locations. These are published figures rather than a guarantee for each user or moment; performance depends on conditions.
The Bottom Line
Measure first, then follow the evidence: compare nearby Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, check plan data and provider alerts, and inspect weather, visibility, cables, and power. Improve router placement or bands only when the local Wi‑Fi is the problem. If both wired and wireless results remain poor, share your test history and timing with provider support before buying replacement equipment.
