For a still scene, start with your phone’s Night or low-light mode, brace the phone on a solid surface, and keep it steady until the capture finishes. If your subject is moving, add light and favor a quicker capture where the camera app allows it. “13MP” alone does not tell you how well a phone will handle darkness: the sensor, lens, stabilization, software, and available modes also matter.
Why 13MP does not tell you how a camera performs at night
Megapixels describe image resolution, not how much light a camera can capture or how effectively its software processes a dim scene. Two phones with 13MP cameras can produce very different low-light photos. The phone model and camera app determine which features and controls are available, so there is no single setting that applies to every 13MP phone.

Use night mode for a still scene
Look in the camera app for a mode called Night, Night Sight, Night Vision, or something similar. It may switch on automatically in dim conditions, appear in the mode carousel, or be listed under “More.” Availability and behavior vary by phone and app.

Night modes may take longer than a regular photo or combine multiple frames. That can help with a stationary scene, but it does not guarantee a sharp image if a person, pet, or other subject moves during capture. Keep the phone still and wait for the camera to finish before lowering it.

- Google’s Pixel guidance recommends holding still while using Night Sight; its astrophotography guidance also recommends a steady surface or tripod. Google Pixel Camera Help.
- Apple says Night mode is available on supported iPhone models, activates when low light is detected, and can take several seconds depending on darkness. Apple recommends holding the phone steady; a solid surface or tripod can help. Apple Support.
- Camera from Google says Night mode is limited to selected compatible devices. In that app, HDR being on prevents Night mode from working; that app-specific interaction should not be assumed for other camera apps. Camera from Google Help.
Keep the phone steady through the whole capture
For a still subject, rest the phone on a secure ledge or table, or use a smartphone tripod if there is no suitable surface. Avoid touching or moving the phone while the shutter is active. A tripod is optional: bracing the phone costs nothing and can provide a steadier position than holding it at arm’s length. It reduces camera movement, but it cannot stop the subject from moving.
NASA’s tripod guidance is for smartphone astrophotography, where long night-sky exposures make a stable mount useful; it is not a requirement for an ordinary indoor snapshot. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide.

Handle moving subjects differently
A night mode that gathers light over time may blur a moving person, pet, or vehicle even when the phone itself is steady. If possible, move the subject nearer to a lamp or other available light, or brighten the scene. When the camera app offers Pro or manual controls, a faster shutter can reduce motion blur, but it may also make the image darker or noisier. The right balance depends on the phone and the light; there is no universal shutter speed or ISO value for an unspecified 13MP camera.

Samsung documents shutter-speed and ISO controls on supported Galaxy phones. Its UK support guide, updated July 26, 2023, describes Galaxy Night mode as combining 30 images and lists compatible models. A quick low-light workflow
- Check the lens and frame the shot. Wipe the camera lens and choose a composition that avoids unnecessary movement.
- Choose the available low-light mode. Check the camera app’s mode carousel or “More” menu, or see whether a night mode activates automatically. Follow the controls shown on your phone; the labels differ by model.
- Stabilize the phone for a still scene. Use a secure surface or tripod, then avoid touching the phone during capture.
- Wait for the capture to complete. Night photos can take several seconds; do not move the phone as soon as you tap the shutter.
- For a moving subject, add light if you can. If manual controls are available, try a faster shutter and check whether the result is sharp enough without becoming too dark or noisy.
- Review the photo at full size. If it is blurred, consider whether the camera moved or the subject moved before changing modes or controls.
Match the approach to the scene

These techniques improve your chances of getting a usable photo, but they cannot guarantee a particular result. For exact mode names and controls, identify the phone model and camera app.
