To improve a demanding PC game demo, change graphics settings a little at a time and compare the same scene after each change. If the hitches happen mainly on a first launch or the first time an effect appears, shader compilation may be involved. Neither pattern identifies the cause by itself: the right fix depends on the demo, your PC, and when the problem occurs.
Start with a repeatable test
Before changing settings, note what the problem looks like: consistently low frame rates, uneven frame delivery, or brief hitches at a particular moment. Replay the same scene or route after each adjustment and compare both smoothness and image quality. If the demo includes an official benchmark or support instructions, use those when available; there is no universal benchmark procedure for an unspecified demo.

Lower demanding graphics settings gradually
Open the demo’s graphics menu and adjust one setting or a small group at a time. Riot Games Support recommends lowering demanding options, testing, and then raising individual settings again to find a suitable balance. As it puts it, “There’s no single perfect setup for every PC.” Menu labels and the effect of each option vary by game. Riot Games Support’s graphics guidance offers examples, not guaranteed fixes for every demo.

- Effects and post-processing: Reduce effects, particles, or post-processing options where available.
- Scene detail: Test lower environment, detail, or material quality.
- Image enhancement: Try reducing anti-aliasing or other image-enhancement effects.
- Textures: Test texture quality separately so you can judge its effect on performance and appearance.
Test resolution as a separate trade-off
Reducing resolution can lower the amount of rendering work, but it makes the image visibly less detailed. Compare the result on the same scene and keep the lower resolution only if the smoother performance is worth the visual change.

Compare fullscreen and VSync options
Riot’s guidance notes that fullscreen can help on some systems. VSync synchronizes frame output with the display to help prevent tearing; turning it off may improve performance or reduce input delay in some cases, but can make tearing visible. Try the available options individually and judge the result on your own display rather than assuming one setting is best for every PC. Riot Games Support explains these trade-offs.
Check whether the timing points to shader compilation
A hitch during a first launch or the first use of an effect can be consistent with shader compilation, but it does not prove that shaders are the cause. Microsoft explains that games may compile shaders at launch or just in time during play, adding to load times or causing shader-compilation stutter. Its Advanced Shader Delivery overview describes precompiling shaders as a way to reduce that category of stutter on supported setups. The feature requires supported Windows, GPU, driver, and storefront integration; its availability does not establish support for every game or demo.

Vendor features have separate eligibility rules
Intel documents a separate precompiled-shader feature. Its support page says it is disabled by default on supported systems and requires eligible Intel hardware, a supported game installed through Steam, a qualifying driver, an internet connection for the initial download, and at least 1 GB of disk space. Intel also notes that game support can vary by driver and updates. Check Intel’s current feature requirements before expecting it to apply to a particular demo.

AMD’s FAQ for Adrenalin 26.9.2 says background shader compilation can reduce initial load times, while affected titles may show reduced performance until compilation finishes. For titles affected by that feature, AMD recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing performance measurements and excluding the first run of each new benchmark session. This is AMD’s guidance for affected titles, not a universal waiting period for every game. See the AMD Adrenalin 26.9.2 background shader compilation FAQ.

Reported benefits are feature- and title-specific, not promises of extra frame rate in this demo. Microsoft’s DirectX blog reported an approximately 95% reduction in shader compilation time for Gears of War: E-Day under its announced Advanced Shader Delivery setup; that is not a general FPS gain. Intel estimates 20–50% faster initial loading times for its supported feature, says results vary by game and system configuration, and lists its page as last reviewed March 16, 2026. Neither figure establishes an expected improvement for an unnamed demo. Microsoft’s announcement describes the Gears of War: E-Day result; Intel’s support page describes its estimate and caveats.

A low frame rate or a stutter does not, by itself, identify which component is limiting performance. Microsoft’s developer guidance discusses CPU and GPU limits, memory considerations, file-processing overhead, and shader compilation as possible contributors to Windows game performance. It notes that CPU performance is commonly a constraint in the systems discussed, while high resolution and pixel-shader demand can contribute to GPU limits. Those broad observations cannot diagnose your PC or this demo. Microsoft’s Windows game performance guidance is aimed at developers, not a test result for your system.

Use the repeatable comparison to determine whether a graphics adjustment changes the problem, and note whether the hitch is tied to a first-use event. If you are considering a component upgrade, first establish which limit the demo is actually reaching and check the game’s requirements alongside your PC specifications. The information in the demo title alone is not enough to recommend a GPU, CPU, memory kit, SSD, cooling part, or peripheral.
