Start by lowering the game’s resolution and graphics quality, then reduce or cap its frame rate if that option is available. Test one change at a time in the same game scene over a sustained session: a brief burst of speed can hide heat-related performance decline. Keep the phone ventilated, out of direct sun, and, if heat is a problem, avoid demanding play while charging. The right settings depend on the phone, game, compatibility app, drivers, and environment.
Why PC games can run hot on Android
“PC games on Android” generally means a Windows game is running through a compatibility layer rather than as a native Android game. Winlator, for example, describes itself as an Android app for Windows x86_64 applications and games, using Wine and Box86/Box64. The game’s own graphics settings and the compatibility app’s configuration can both affect how much work the phone must do. Winlator’s project README describes the app and its configuration options.

Heat-related slowdowns are not necessarily a sign that a setting is broken. Android explains that devices can sustain high performance only for a limited time before thermal throttling reduces performance. How quickly that happens varies with the phone’s thermal design and the conditions around it. A short test may therefore look fine while a longer session develops stutter or lower frame rates. Tune performance one change at a time
- Establish a baseline. Choose a repeatable scene and play long enough to see whether performance changes over time. Note visible stutter, frame pacing or FPS if the game exposes it, heat warnings, and whether performance deteriorates during the session.
- Lower resolution. Reduce the game’s rendering resolution and compare the same scene. This can reduce graphics workload, though the improvement depends on the game and device.
- Reduce graphics quality. Lower the graphics preset or demanding individual effects if the game offers those controls. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped without making the image worse than necessary.
- Try a lower frame-rate cap. If the game or compatibility app provides an FPS limiter, try a cap the phone can maintain rather than aiming for the highest possible peak. Lowering frame rate or visual fidelity is among the workload-reduction approaches described in Android’s thermal guidance.
- Recheck over a sustained session. Compare smoothness, crashes, visual quality, heat behavior, and battery drain—not just the highest FPS you see at the start. If a change makes the game unstable, revert it and test another variable.
Android’s Dynamic Performance Framework includes developer-facing APIs for thermal state, game mode, and game state. Adjust Winlator settings for the individual game
In Winlator, the project README advises users experiencing performance issues to try the Box64 preset Performance (Gaming Mode) at Container Settings -> Advanced Tab. Winlator also supports configuring individual games through home-screen shortcuts, so a change for one title does not have to become a setting for every game. Make one adjustment at a time and retest; a performance-oriented preset is not automatically the coolest or most stable choice for every title.
For a game built with Unity, Winlator lists Stability (Unity Games) as a stability-oriented preset. Consider it when crashes or compatibility matter more than peak speed, and judge the result by whether the game remains stable as well as by its frame rate. Preset names and options may vary by Winlator build or fork; use the settings available in your installed version. The Winlator README also lists project-stated minimum requirements for its WineBox64 build: Android 9 or later, Snapdragon 460 or higher, Adreno 610 or higher, Vulkan 1.1 or higher, at least 2 GB of free storage, and at least 1 GB of free RAM, with memory needs depending on the game. These are not a guarantee that a particular game will run well, and they do not necessarily apply to other builds or forks.

Reduce heat from the phone and its surroundings
- Give the phone airflow. Avoid playing in direct sunlight or in an enclosed, poorly ventilated spot. Do not cover a powered device while it is charging.
- Lower screen brightness. Use a comfortable lower brightness during long sessions.
- Choose Wi-Fi when practical. Google lists mobile-data use among the conditions that can contribute to warmth, so Wi-Fi may be worth trying if it is available and reliable.
- Avoid demanding play while charging if the phone is getting hot. Gaming and charging during demanding use can both contribute to warmth. If heat becomes a problem, disconnect the charger rather than continuing to play plugged in.
These are general heat-management steps, not a promise that a particular temperature or performance level will result. Google’s Pixel phone heat guidance discusses gaming, charging, sunlight, and ventilation; the underlying thermal behavior and available warnings vary by model.

- Stop the game and disconnect the phone from power if it is plugged in.
- Move it to a cooler place with airflow, away from direct sunlight.
- Wait until it has cooled before using it again. Do not try to cool it with ice or by putting it in a freezer.
- If overheating keeps happening during ordinary use, the phone displays warnings, shuts down, or has charging problems, consult support for your exact phone model.
Google’s instructions for a Pixel phone that feels too warm or hot recommend disconnecting power, moving it somewhere cooler, and not using it until it cools. Its temperature-check instructions apply to Pixel 6 and later; do not assume those menus or readings exist on other Android phones. Likewise, the ambient-temperature figures in Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro safety guide are Pixel-specific, not universal Android thresholds.

When changing settings is not enough
If a game remains incompatible or unstable after reasonable tuning, prioritise whether it runs reliably over chasing a higher peak frame rate. Compatibility, sustained frame pacing, visual quality, battery drain, and heat behavior are all useful comparison points. Phone designs and compatibility layers differ, so a setting that works on one device is not evidence that it will work the same way on another.
If you already own a gaming PC and have a reliable network, streaming a game rendered on that PC to the phone is another general option. The host PC does most of the game rendering, while the phone still handles the display and network activity. This is a different setup, not a guaranteed way to eliminate phone heat.

A clip-on phone cooler fan is another optional consideration for long sessions, but the cited Google guidance does not test external coolers or establish a performance benefit or universal fit. Check compatibility with your phone and the manufacturer’s guidance before buying or using one.
