You can often improve game smoothness without buying hardware by identifying the actual problem, reducing competing work, correcting a graphics setting, or lowering a demanding in-game option. The right fix depends on whether you have low frame rates, stutter, input delay, or slow loading—and none of these changes can overcome every hardware limit.

Identify what is slowing the game down

Before changing settings, note the game, resolution, graphics settings, and whether the PC is a laptop or desktop. Then distinguish the symptom: a consistently low frame rate, dips in busy scenes, brief hitches, delay between input and on-screen response, or slow loading. These can have different causes. Online lag is also different from local rendering performance: a network problem can make a game feel unresponsive even when the PC is rendering smoothly.

Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that does not meet current requirements among possible causes of slow Windows performance. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.

Reduce competing work and keep software current

  • Close apps you do not need while gaming, especially those consuming substantial CPU, memory, or disk activity.
  • Review startup apps and disable items you do not need launching with Windows. Avoid disabling software you rely on or do not recognize without checking what it does.
  • Check that the system drive has usable free space. Limited storage can contribute to broader Windows performance problems, although freeing space does not guarantee a higher frame rate.
  • Install relevant Windows updates and graphics-driver updates through Windows Update or the PC or GPU manufacturer’s official tools.

These steps can remove avoidable background load or correct software issues; they are not a guaranteed FPS boost. You do not need a third-party “optimizer” utility to try them.

Make sure the game is using the intended GPU

This check is relevant on Windows 11 systems with both integrated and discrete graphics. If a game is assigned to the integrated processor when you want it to use the discrete GPU, set its preference in Windows:

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Select the game. If it is not listed, add it using the available app-selection option.
  3. Open Options, choose High performance if that corresponds to the intended GPU, and save.
  4. Restart the game so it uses the changed preference.

The preference only matters when more than one GPU is available, and choosing a high-performance GPU can increase power use on a laptop. Microsoft documents the setting in its Windows 11 windowed-game optimization guidance.

Use Windows windowed-game optimization only for compatible games

Windows 11 provides an optional graphics setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it transitions compatible games from the legacy blt presentation model to flip model, reducing frame latency and enabling supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR). Microsoft describes it as an improvement to gaming performance for those specific games and modes—not a universal frame-rate increase.

To test it, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, open Options, and change the windowed-game optimization setting if it is available. Test the same scene afterward. If the game behaves worse, turn the option off for that game. The feature does not apply to every game, graphics API, or display mode.

Lower demanding in-game settings in small steps

Use the game’s own graphics menu and change one setting at a time. Try a lower resolution or render scale, or reduce options such as ray tracing, shadows, or anti-aliasing. The effect depends on the game and what is limiting performance, so there is no reliable universal ranking or promised FPS gain.

  1. Choose a repeatable scene, such as the same save point or built-in benchmark.
  2. Change one setting by a modest amount and play or run the scene again.
  3. Compare smoothness and image quality. Keep the change only if the improvement is worthwhile.
  4. Restore the original setting if the change makes little difference or the visual tradeoff is too large.

AMD’s Radeon Boost is another option for supported games: it adjusts resolution in response to user input. Its availability and controls vary by system and configuration, and changing resolution can affect image clarity. Check the per-game options in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition; AMD describes these features in its graphics settings documentation.

Check GPU-vendor features only when they fit your system

Option When it may apply Tradeoff or limit
NVIDIA “Prefer maximum performance” NVIDIA says this may help in certain applications when incorrect clock throttling is causing low FPS. Test it for the affected game and revert if there is no observable benefit; the mode can increase power use and heat. See NVIDIA’s power-management guidance.
AMD Radeon Boost For supported games on systems where the feature is available; it adjusts resolution based on user input. Image clarity may change, and availability depends on configuration. See AMD’s Adrenalin graphics settings documentation.
AMD Radeon Chill For users who want to regulate frame rate to conserve power and reduce heat. It is not a general FPS-maximizing switch; limiting frame rate can reduce performance when the goal is the highest possible frame rate. Availability varies by system. See AMD’s Adrenalin graphics settings documentation.
Intel Application Optimization For selected supported games on eligible Intel processors and platforms. It changes thread scheduling, and results vary with configuration and graphics capability. Check Intel’s current title list and system requirements before enabling it. See Intel’s Application Optimization overview.

Measure changes consistently—and know when to stop

Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene under the same conditions. Note frame-rate consistency and stutter, not just a single peak number; for latency, judge whether input response feels better in the same situation. This makes it easier to identify which change helped and to undo one that did not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game still struggles with demanding settings already lowered and repeatable tests show the same limit, configuration changes may have reached their ceiling. Software adjustments can remove avoidable overhead or fix a misconfiguration, but they cannot make every underpowered CPU or GPU meet a demanding game’s requirements.
