Improve OCR by first preserving the best available image, then correcting skew and layout, testing contrast and thresholding on copies, and choosing recognition software suited to the script. For cursive or historical writing, ordinary OCR may be the wrong tool: use a handwriting text recognition (HTR) model whose language, period, and layout match the material. Judge every change against verified transcriptions of representative pages, not by how clean an image looks.
Start with the best image you can preserve
Keep an unchanged master image and make all enhancement tests on copies. Tesseract’s documentation says it works best with images of at least 300 dpi, but increasing the pixel dimensions of an existing image does not recover details that were never captured. If you are creating a new scan, use that guidance as an input target; it is not a guarantee that a particular scanner or enhancement will solve a difficult page. Before changing OCR settings, inspect what the recognition system is actually receiving. Tesseract can write its processed input image with tessedit_write_images set to true, or by using get.images. If faint strokes have vanished in this intermediate image, work on the image pipeline first: a different recognition model cannot reliably read marks it never sees.

Correct page geometry and layout before tuning recognition
Deskew and crop carefully
Rotate a skewed page until its text lines are horizontal. Tesseract warns that line segmentation quality can drop significantly when a page is too skewed. Crop dark borders that could be mistaken for characters, but retain a reasonable margin rather than cutting close to the writing.

Match segmentation to the region
A full-page layout is not the right assumption for every input. When working with a cropped passage, choose a page segmentation mode suited to what is actually present: for example, a text block, a single line, a word, a character, or sparse text. A page that contains several isolated annotations may need different segmentation from a continuous paragraph. Tesseract documents these options alongside its image-quality guidance at Improving the quality of the output.
Test contrast and thresholding without discarding the original
Faded ink and uneven paper are often thresholding problems, but there is no universally best conversion from gray or color to black and white. Tesseract’s default Otsu binarization can be suboptimal when the background varies in darkness. Tesseract 5.0.0 added Adaptive Otsu and Sauvola options, which are worth comparing on such pages. Keep the original grayscale or color image alongside each binary version: thresholding can separate text from paper on one region while erasing faint strokes elsewhere.

| Version to compare | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Original grayscale or color | Whether weak strokes and background differences remain visible. |
| Default Otsu | Whether the page separates cleanly, especially where the background is fairly even. |
| Adaptive Otsu or Sauvola | Whether local background variation is handled without losing fine strokes; these options are available in Tesseract 5.0.0 and later. |
Compare recognition results as well as appearance. A visually crisp page is not necessarily a more accurate OCR input.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse cleanup filters only for a diagnosed artifact
Noise can interfere with recognition, but filters also alter handwriting. Tesseract’s guidance notes that erosion can shrink over-bold glyphs when heavy ink bleed makes characters too thick. On a faded page, the same operation may break thin strokes or erase joins and diacritics. Apply morphology only when the relevant problem is present, then inspect the altered image against the untouched version. The documentation does not prescribe a universally safe filter strength.

When evaluating binarization and cleanup, check more than whether the background looks tidy. Historical-document evaluation work considers distinct failure types such as broken or missed text, false marks, background noise, character enlargement, and merged characters. A filter that removes specks but joins neighboring letters may be a net loss. Ntirogiannis, Gatos, and Pratikakis, “Performance evaluation methodology for historical document image binarization” (2013).
Choose OCR or handwriting recognition for the writing
For machine-printed text, general OCR may work once image quality and segmentation are corrected. Cursive handwriting, historical scripts, and highly individual writing call for a handwriting text recognition (HTR) model trained for a relevant language, period, and layout. Model scope matters: a strong result on one collection is not evidence that the same model will work for a different script or archive.

Use a model only within its stated domain
The Swedish National Archives’ SATRN HTR model is trained for Swedish running text from the mid-17th through late-19th centuries, chiefly book-like documents. Its model card cautions that layout and handwriting style affect performance; tables, newspapers, and other writing styles may fare worse. That is a reason to look for a domain-matched model, not a general recommendation to use this Swedish model on other material. Swedish National Archives SATRN HTR model card.
The card reports training on about one million text-line images. For the aggregated SATRN_1650_1900 model, its CER was 0.096 on the 1661 test set, 0.078 on the 1664 test set, and 0.215 on the unusual-layout 1688 test set. Those are results for named test sets and one model, not a general OCR accuracy benchmark or a prediction for your pages.

The same card describes fine-tuning experiments in which the 17th-century combined test CER changed from 0.095 to 0.084 after fine-tuning with 28 pages, while a 16th-century combined test changed from 0.124 to 0.064 using 57 pages. These findings belong to that archive’s model, data, and experiments; they do not establish a universal minimum training-set size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Measure whether a change actually helps
- Choose a representative sample. Include the range of handwriting, fading, page condition, and layouts in the collection rather than selecting only the clearest pages.
- Create verified transcriptions. Use them as ground truth for every OCR run you compare.
- Record a baseline. Measure character error rate (CER); add word error rate (WER) if word-level mistakes are important to your work.
- Change one element at a time. Compare geometry, thresholding, cleanup, segmentation, or recognition model separately so you can identify what caused a change.
- Evaluate end to end. Include region and line segmentation in the comparison, not just recognition on lines that have already been perfectly cropped.
- Review the errors. Look for missing or broken strokes, false marks, and merged characters as well as the aggregate score.
Repeat the comparison on the kinds of pages where you expect to use the pipeline. A model’s test-set score does not guarantee the same performance on another archive, script, or layout. For Arabic-script historical documents, NIST’s OpenHaRT describes an evaluation effort, not a current commercial OCR-product comparison: NIST OpenHaRT.
