To improve a live stream, first identify what is going wrong: dropped frames or disconnects usually point to the connection, while stutter with a stable connection can indicate encoder or computer strain. Blurry video may need a better match between bitrate and resolution; poor sound often needs microphone, room, or routing adjustments. Test changes with a representative broadcast before going live, and use your platform’s stream-health messages to guide the next step.
1. Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
“Bad quality” can mean several different things. Separate delivery problems from picture, sound, or playback problems before you change anything.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: OBS describes these as connection problems between the broadcaster and the ingest server. Check upload stability and whether the bitrate is too high for the connection.
- Stuttering while the connection appears stable: Check encoder and system load. More bitrate will not fix an overloaded computer.
- Blurry or pixelated picture: Check whether the selected bitrate can support the chosen resolution and frame rate, and whether the platform supports those settings.
- Poor, missing, or out-of-sync audio: Check microphone selection, routing, levels, room noise, and sync.
- Only one viewer reports buffering or a poor picture: The issue may be that viewer’s connection, device, or playback settings rather than your outgoing stream. Compare with the platform’s stream-health information and another playback device before changing your broadcast setup.
Change one relevant setting at a time and retest. Several simultaneous changes make it harder to tell what fixed—or worsened—the problem.

- Include the scene changes, motion, microphone use, and other sources you expect to use live.
- Check the platform’s stream-health messages and listen to the stream playback, not just the local monitoring feed.
- If you adjust a setting, repeat the test long enough to see whether the symptom returns.
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health during the event. A speed test can help assess the connection, but it cannot replace a test of the actual stream.
3. Check upload capacity and stability
Your stream travels over your outbound connection, so download speed alone does not show whether you have enough upload capacity. Compare the intended stream bitrate with the upload speed you can sustain, and leave room for variation and other people or devices using the network.
Twitch’s general FAQ guidance is upload speed equal to the stream bitrate plus 30 percent. That is Twitch guidance, not a universal engineering guarantee for every platform, connection, or home network. Use your destination platform’s current recommendations, then verify your own setup with a representative test.
- Run more than one upload check at different times if the connection varies through the day.
- Notice whether other household or office traffic coincides with dropped frames.
- If the stream drops frames or disconnects, reduce the bitrate if it exceeds the upload capacity the connection reliably sustains, then test again.
Reducing bitrate can make the picture less detailed. The aim is a stable setting your connection can maintain, not the largest number your encoder allows.

4. Use Ethernet when feasible
For computer-based live streams, YouTube recommends Ethernet. A wired connection is a useful first step when Wi-Fi fluctuations or interruptions are suspected. It does not increase the capacity of your internet plan or resolve congestion at your internet service provider.
If Ethernet is impractical, test from the location and Wi-Fi network you will actually use. For a mobile stream, YouTube advises checking signal strength. A better signal may help, but test the live path rather than assuming a strong indicator guarantees stable upload.
5. Match resolution and frame rate to the content
Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate and encoding capacity. Choose settings based on the destination platform, the type of content, your connection, and the computer’s available headroom—not simply the highest available option.

- A talking-head broadcast may not need the same frame rate or bitrate as fast-moving content.
- If a higher resolution makes delivery unstable, lower the output demands and test again rather than treating maximum resolution as automatically best.
There is no single best resolution, frame rate, or bitrate for every platform and setup. Confirm the destination platform’s current encoder guidance and test the combination you plan to use.

6. Use the destination platform’s current encoder guidance
Do not copy a preset just because it worked for another service, device, or older platform limit. YouTube and Twitch publish their own encoder recommendations and constraints, and those can differ. Check the current guidance for your destination before setting resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or other encoder options.
YouTube Help puts the trade-off plainly: “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.” Treat platform recommendations as a starting point; your representative test and stream-health feedback show how your own connection and system behave.
7. Reduce output demands if the network drops frames
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as connection problems between the broadcaster and the ingest server. If those symptoms appear, investigate the connection and stable upload capacity before buying new equipment.
- Check whether the upload path is stable and whether other network use is competing with the stream.
- Compare the stream bitrate with the upload capacity you can sustain, rather than relying on download speed.
- If the bitrate is beyond what the path reliably supports, lower it and run another representative test.
- Check stream health again during the test to see whether dropped frames or disconnections continue.
A lower bitrate may reduce picture quality, so evaluate both stability and the resulting image. If the connection is stable but the stream still stutters, investigate encoding performance instead of continuing to lower bitrate blindly.

8. Check encoding performance and computer load
Resolution and frame rate consume encoding and system resources. If the stream stutters despite a stable connection, inspect the encoder and system load, then reduce output demands or competing workloads as needed.
- Close or reduce unnecessary workloads that compete with encoding while live.
- If system or encoder strain persists, test a lower resolution or frame rate.
- Retest after each change; a network adjustment will not solve an encoding bottleneck.
Higher output settings need more encoding capacity. A faster connection alone cannot compensate for a computer that cannot encode the selected stream smoothly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Improve microphone signal and room sound
Check that the intended microphone is routed into the stream, then listen to the broadcast for room echo, traffic, appliances, wind, clipping, or sync problems. YouTube notes that a microphone can improve audio, but microphone choice alone does not correct poor placement or a noisy room.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Test in a quiet location and listen to a recording or test stream at normal playback volume.
- Move the microphone away from noisy equipment and address avoidable background noise.
- Soft furnishings can help reduce echo in a reflective room.
- A USB microphone is generally a plug-and-play connection; an XLR setup needs an interface or mixer. Choose based on the audio problem and setup you actually have, rather than assuming one connection type guarantees better sound.
Check routing and levels again after reconnecting or changing audio devices. A microphone that works locally may still be absent from the live mix if the wrong source is selected.

10. Stabilize the camera and monitor stream health
Check framing and focus before the broadcast. If the camera is shaking, a tripod or similar support can steady it; it will not fix weak lighting, poor focus, network trouble, or encoding load.
During the stream, watch the platform’s health messages and identify the symptom before making an adjustment. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing its messages. When a warning appears, determine whether it concerns delivery, audio, or picture and encoding; then change the relevant setting and verify the result.
Troubleshooting: symptom, likely area, next check
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections | Connection to the ingest server or insufficiently stable upload | Check upload stability and competing network traffic; reduce bitrate if it exceeds what the path reliably sustains, then retest. |
| Stutter with a stable connection | Encoder or computer load | Inspect system and encoder load; reduce resolution, frame rate, or competing workload and test again. |
| Blurry or pixelated picture | Bitrate, output resolution and frame rate, or platform compatibility | Check current platform guidance and test a combination the connection can sustain reliably. |
| Missing or poor microphone audio | Microphone routing, levels, placement, or room noise | Confirm the intended source is in the stream, listen to a test, and address noise, echo, or clipping. |
| Shaky camera picture | Camera movement | Stabilize the camera with a tripod or similar support; assess lighting and focus separately. |
| One viewer reports buffering or poor playback | Possibly that viewer’s device, connection, or playback rather than the outgoing broadcast | Compare platform health feedback and another playback device before changing encoder settings. |
