If callers hear noise or cannot hear you clearly
Turn on Voice Isolation during the call
Voice Isolation prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise picked up by the microphone. For a phone call, it requires iOS 16.4 or later and a compatible iPhone XR, iPhone XS model, or later. While on the call:
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the controls for the app you are using for the call.
- Under Audio & Video, choose Voice Isolation.
The mode applies to that app and remains selected there until you change it. Standard uses standard voice processing. Automatic chooses a mode for the situation; Apple’s example is Voice Isolation for calls through the receiver and Standard for speakerphone calls. Automatic Mic Mode requires iOS 18 or later. Wide Spectrum is not available for regular phone calls.

Check the built-in microphones
If Voice Isolation does not solve the problem, check for something physically blocking the microphone or an app-specific permission issue. Apple recommends:
- Remove the case, film, or screen protector and clear debris from the microphone openings.
- For a basic microphone check, open Voice Memos and speak at the bottom of the iPhone, then play the recording.
- If the problem occurs on speakerphone, record a video while speaking at the top of the iPhone with each camera, then play both videos back.
- If only one app has the issue, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and confirm that app has permission.
If recordings remain unclear after these checks, the iPhone may need service.

If calls drop or service is poor indoors
Set up Wi‑Fi Calling
Wi‑Fi Calling can route calls over Wi‑Fi where cellular coverage is little or absent. It depends on carrier support, regional availability, and a Wi‑Fi network that works with the feature. To enable it:
- Open Settings > Cellular > Wi‑Fi Calling.
- If you use multiple SIMs, select the line you want to configure.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- Follow any prompt to enter or confirm an emergency-services address.
When Wi‑Fi Calling is in use, Apple says “Wi‑Fi” appears with the carrier name in the status bar. Availability varies by carrier and country or region. Emergency calls use cellular service when available; if it is unavailable, they may use Wi‑Fi Calling, and location information may help responders. Some carriers may use your registered address, and emergency alerts may not be received while connected to Wi‑Fi Calling. It does not guarantee emergency-call connectivity.

If Wi‑Fi Calling will not turn on or work
Check whether your carrier offers the feature in your region and make sure iPhone software is current. Then try these steps in order:
- Restart the iPhone.
- Try a different Wi‑Fi network.
- Turn Wi‑Fi Calling off and on again.
- Consider Reset Network Settings only after the simpler checks. This is a broader network reset, not the first troubleshooting step.
If you hear the other caller too softly
This is an incoming-volume problem, not a microphone problem. With supported headphones, Headphone Accommodations can adjust frequencies or amplify soft sounds. Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations, turn on the feature, and enable Phone so the adjustment applies to calls. The available options depend on the headphone model.

Phone Noise Cancellation is available and on by default on iPhone 12 and earlier, with an option to turn it off for comfort. Do not expect this setting on newer iPhone models.
When a headset may help—and when it will not
A headset can put the microphone closer to your mouth or help with background noise in some situations. Apple lists AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 as compatible with Voice Isolation during calls on iPhone, iPad, or Mac; Apple says this can remove background sounds such as wind for the listener. Start with the built-in Voice Isolation and microphone checks before buying an accessory. A headset cannot restore cellular coverage or repair a damaged iPhone microphone.
