For a better Google Meet call, check your camera, microphone, and speakers before joining; turn on noise cancellation for unwanted non-speech sounds; and lower video send quality if your connection, battery, or data is strained. Background and appearance effects are optional: they can use device resources and may not be available on every account or device.
Check your camera, microphone, and speakers before joining
Start in Meet’s pre-join screen, before changing effects or video quality. Select the camera, microphone, and speakers you intend to use from their device menus. Speak and check that the microphone meter responds, play the test sound, and confirm that the camera preview shows the expected image. A wrong device selection can make a call seem faulty even when the equipment works.

Google warns that using a microphone and external speakers that do not work well together can cause echo. If you hear echo or have poor audio and video, Google Meet Help recommends a headset with a microphone. This is an option if your existing setup is inadequate, not a requirement for every caller.

Turn on noise cancellation for non-speech sounds
Noise cancellation is intended to reduce sounds such as typing, a door closing, room echo, or construction. Google describes the feature as filtering non-speech noise; it does not remove voices from a TV or people talking nearby. Turn it off if participants need to hear music or another non-speech sound.
You can look for the noise-cancellation control in Audio settings before or during a meeting. If it is missing, availability may depend on your account edition, device, region, client, or administrator settings. Google documents both cloud-based availability for certain Workspace editions and device-based cancellation on many Android devices, so access and defaults are not the same for everyone. Lower video send quality when the connection or device is struggling
On desktop, open Settings, then Video. Choose the camera you want and adjust the send resolution. Reducing video quality may help when you have delays, a poor connection, limited data, low battery, or other call-quality problems. It is a trade-off, not a guaranteed fix: the picture sent to others may be less detailed.

Use backgrounds and appearance effects only when they help
Meet may offer background blur, static or custom backgrounds, and other appearance effects, depending on the device, account, client, and administrator configuration. Use them when they solve a specific problem, such as distracting surroundings; they are not necessary for clear audio or video.
- Check privacy: Changing or adding a background can reveal sensitive information if the selected image or scene is inappropriate.
- Watch performance: Effects can use more battery, and some may slow a device.
- Check eligibility: Desktop effects and automatic lighting or processing have compatibility and plan or region conditions. On Android, Google says background effects require Android 9 or later and a supported device; its examples include Samsung Galaxy S9 and later and Pixel 3 and later.
For current device and account requirements, consult Google’s desktop effects guidance or Android effects guidance. If a control is absent, check eligibility and administrator settings rather than assuming a setting is available to every Meet user.

Troubleshoot the connection if settings do not solve the problem
In-app controls cannot compensate for every network or hardware problem. If a call still looks or sounds poor, work through the connection and device conditions:
- Check bandwidth and latency. If possible, try wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Close unused browser tabs and apps, and reduce the Meet window if your device is under load.
- Check headset compatibility. Some Bluetooth headsets may perform poorly with Meet.
- If the call remains unstable, turn off your video or switch to another device.
- Consider whether VPN routing or network equipment inspecting or prioritizing Meet traffic is affecting the connection.
