Make Google Maps directions easier to hear
Google Maps has a guidance-volume setting on iPhone, and the car’s volume controls can adjust navigation audio while a direction is being spoken.

On your iPhone, open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.

Go to Settings > Navigation > Guidance volume, then choose Softer, Normal, or Louder.

When Google Maps is connected to CarPlay, adjust the vehicle’s volume while navigation guidance is speaking. This lets you change the guidance level at the moment you can hear it.
Google says voice navigation can provide traffic alerts, turns, lane guidance, and notice of a better route. The volume control changes how loud those spoken directions are; it does not determine which kinds of messages Google Maps speaks.
Choose spoken directions, alerts only, or mute
During a route, use the sound control in Google Maps to choose what you hear:

Mute: Navigation sound off.
If you want to keep incident updates but do not need every turn spoken, choose Alerts rather than muting navigation. If directions have stopped speaking unexpectedly, check this control before changing other settings.
Add a stop or search while navigating
Google Maps for CarPlay lets you add a destination to an active route. The available nearby categories can vary by location.

While navigating, tap the CarPlay screen to reveal the menu.

Choose Add Stop.

Select a category, such as gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, or coffee shops, or search for a particular business or type of place. You can use the microphone in the Add Stop flow for voice search.

Choose a result and add it to your route.
To remove a stop, use the CarPlay exit menu or edit the route from the route list on your iPhone.
Report an incident, with local availability in mind
Google Maps provides an on-screen Report control during navigation, along with alert options in Settings. Available report types depend on country, so the same controls may not appear everywhere. Google says a report may appear on the map as you approach the location and can trigger an alert depending on your alert settings.

Apple says CarPlay turn-by-turn navigation requires the iPhone to have an internet connection and Location Services enabled. If Google Maps is not visible in the CarPlay Dashboard’s recent-app area, tap Home and look through the CarPlay app pages.
Dashboard behavior depends on what is navigating: when no app is navigating, it shows the last navigation app opened; when navigation is active, it shows the active app. If multiple supported navigation apps are navigating, Dashboard shows the last opened app that is actively navigating. This is display behavior, not evidence that one app has better directions.

Use CarPlay Voice Control for visible controls
Apple’s CarPlay Voice Control can open an app, tap controls visible on screen, and pan a map by voice. To enable it, go to CarPlay Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control. Availability depends on supported languages and regions.
This is separate from Google Assistant or Gemini. Google’s iPhone help page says Gemini is not currently available for CarPlay, so instructions for using Gemini while navigating on an iPhone should not be treated as CarPlay instructions.
Google Maps or Apple Maps: what these steps do and do not show
The Apple and Google support guidance establishes the controls and requirements described above, not a direct comparison of the apps’ accuracy or overall quality. Which app works better for a particular driver can depend on the route, vehicle, software, and the controls that matter to them. Compare the relevant tasks—such as spoken-alert options or adding a stop—on your own setup rather than assuming either app is always superior.
