Start with the game’s own Performance or frame-rate mode, then enable 120Hz output or variable refresh rate (VRR) only if the game, console, display and HDMI connection all support it. Higher frame rates can come at the cost of internal resolution or visual detail, so compare modes in real gameplay and keep the one whose trade-off you find acceptable.
Start with the game’s frame-rate settings
Open the game’s video, graphics or display settings and look for options such as Performance, Frame Rate, Visuals or Quality. These are usually the most direct way to choose between smoother motion and richer detail. A console’s system-level preference may influence a game, but it does not guarantee that every title offers or follows the same options.

Compare modes in a demanding section of the game, not only in a menu or quiet area. Look for changes in motion smoothness and responsiveness, but also check fine detail, lighting, effects, crowds and image stability. If the faster mode makes an important visual difference for you, switch back; there is no universal best setting.

Understand what a faster mode can change
A game has a limited rendering budget. To target a higher frame rate, it may lower its internal rendering resolution, simplify effects or lighting, or reduce detail such as crowd density. The image sent to the TV can still be 4K even when the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs or upscales the picture. Output resolution and internal render resolution are not the same thing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Upscaling and dynamic resolution can help preserve a clear-looking image while making a higher frame rate possible, but the result depends on how each game implements them. For example, Bethesda says Starfield’s Performance priority lowers internal resolution and detail for effects, lighting and crowds, while Visuals priority keeps the highest resolution and full detail. Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically in heavier scenes.
When a game offers several modes, judge the whole experience rather than relying on the mode name. Compare the frame-rate target and its consistency alongside resolution, reconstruction, ray tracing, effects and other detail. A mode labelled Performance is not guaranteed to look identical to a quality-focused mode.
Enable 120Hz output only when the whole setup supports it
A 120Hz output setting lets a compatible console send a signal at up to 120 refreshes per second. It does not make every game render 120 frames per second: the game must offer a matching mode, and the display and signal path must support the intended resolution and refresh rate.

For PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. PlayStation says the console detects supported TV capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; you can inspect or change the output there. A 120Hz-capable display and a game that supports 120Hz output are both required. PlayStation’s display guidance also covers VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM); ALLM switches a compatible TV into a low-latency mode during gameplay.
On Xbox Series X|S, settings vary by game. In Fortnite, Epic’s instructions require enabling 120Hz under TV & display options and then enabling 120 FPS in Fortnite’s Video settings. On PS5, Epic says to choose the Performance Mode game preset and then turn on Fortnite’s 120 FPS option. If the setting is missing, the game or connected display setup may not support it; Epic also warns that an AV setup without 4K at 120Hz could affect output resolution. See Epic’s Fortnite 120 FPS instructions.
For Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo says 120Hz output is supported only at 1080p or 1440p, and only when both the TV and software support it. The system’s display settings also list output up to 2160p; 120Hz is not supported at that resolution according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 display instructions. The original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED have documented TV output options of Automatic, 480p, 720p or 1080p; Switch Lite does not support TV Mode. Do not assume Switch 2’s refresh-rate options apply to the earlier models. See Nintendo’s original Switch TV settings.

Use VRR to smooth supported frame-rate variation
Variable refresh rate (VRR) synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the console’s graphical output. PlayStation describes VRR as a way to minimize or eliminate presentation issues such as screen tearing and frame-pacing irregularities. It can make variation feel smoother, but it does not promise that a game will render more frames or hold a higher frame rate.
VRR requires a compatible console, display and game or supported mode. Its effect can differ by TV, game and visual mode. PlayStation says VRR can be applied to unsupported PS5 games, but results vary; if you see unexpected behavior, turn that option off. The PS5’s VRR and display options are covered in PlayStation’s 4K and video-output guide.
Check Starfield’s frame-rate options as a game-specific example
Starfield demonstrates how refresh-rate support and graphics choices can interact on Xbox Series X|S. Bethesda documents 30, 40, 60 or Uncapped frame-rate targets when using a 120Hz VRR display setup; without that setup, 30 or 60 targets remain available. These are Starfield-specific options, not a general Xbox menu or a guarantee for other games.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Bethesda recommends Performance priority for 60 fps and above. Visuals priority retains the highest resolution and full detail for effects, lighting and crowds; Performance reduces internal resolution and those details. Either mode can adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes become heavier. Bethesda also notes that a 60 fps target on a non-VRR display may tear. Check Bethesda’s Starfield graphics-mode guidance for the game’s documented options.

If the console or display will not offer 4K at 120Hz, check the signal path before buying anything. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes these checks:
- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports 4K at 120Hz and has current firmware.
- Connect the console to the display’s HDMI port that supports the required format; some TVs have only specific compatible ports.
- Check whether the TV’s settings require an enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI format to be enabled for that port. Sony’s HDMI signal-format guidance explains that some models need this setting.
- Use the cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K at 120Hz. A replacement is not automatically necessary.
- Connect directly to the TV where possible, or check that any receiver, soundbar, switch or other intermediary supports the same signal.
- Review the PS5’s resolution and transfer-rate settings under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
These checks address the output signal, not a game’s rendering performance. A correct 4K 120Hz connection cannot add a higher frame-rate mode that the game does not provide.

Decide whether a display upgrade would help
Try the available in-game and console settings first. A 120Hz VRR TV or monitor is useful only if your current display is the limiting part of a setup and the games you play support the features you want. The display enables compatible output; it cannot make a console or game render faster on its own.
Before considering a purchase, verify the display’s supported resolution and refresh rate, the HDMI port you would use, the console’s output capabilities and the specific game mode. Those details can vary by display model, hardware revision, region and software version. Official support pages can change as software and products are updated.
