How to Improve FPS and Reduce Stuttering in PC Games

Low FPS and brief stutters have different causes. Learn how to identify a CPU or GPU limit, account for shader compilation, and choose low-risk settings before buying hardware.

To improve low FPS, first find out whether the game is limited by the GPU, CPU, or another constraint; to reduce brief stutters, check for shader compilation—especially after a graphics-driver update or on a game’s first run. Record a repeatable scene, change one relevant setting at a time, and compare frame rates and frame-time consistency before considering new hardware.

Why FPS is low—and why stuttering is different

Low average FPS is a sustained performance problem: the game consistently renders fewer frames than you want. Stuttering is an interruption in frame delivery, often felt as a brief hitch even when the average FPS looks acceptable. The causes can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows game titles discusses both CPU- and GPU-limited performance, while Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA identify shader compilation as one possible cause of intermittent stutter. A setting that helps a GPU-limited game may do little for a CPU-limited one, and lowering graphics quality will not necessarily stop a shader-compilation hitch. Diagnose the symptom before changing settings.

Establish a repeatable baseline

Use the same game scene or a repeatable built-in benchmark for each comparison. Record average FPS and, if available, frame-time behavior: uneven frame times can reveal hitches that an average hides. Note whether the problem is persistent or occurs only at particular moments, and whether it began after a graphics-driver update or on the game’s first run.

Use the game’s performance display or a driver overlay, where available, to observe CPU and GPU load, clock speeds, temperatures, and frame times. Treat these as clues rather than a diagnosis based on one moment; workloads change as a scene changes. Microsoft notes that CPU limits are common among the Windows game titles it analyzes, while high resolution and pixel-shader demand can push a game toward a GPU limit.

If stuttering began after a driver update or on first launch

Give shader processing time to finish before deciding that the update made performance worse. A game may compile shaders in the background or when it encounters effects for the first time, causing temporary pauses or lower performance.

  • NVIDIA: NVIDIA says installing a driver clears the shader cache, so a game may stutter on its first run afterward. NVIDIA Control Panel Help: Manage 3D Settings
  • AMD: AMD says background shader compilation can lower performance until it completes. For affected titles, AMD recommends playing for approximately 15 minutes before capturing performance measurements and excluding the first benchmark run of a new session. This is vendor measurement guidance, not a promise that performance will recover by a particular amount or that every stutter has this cause. AMD Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 FAQ

If hitches persist after shader processing should have finished, return to the baseline and investigate other causes rather than repeatedly clearing caches or assuming the driver is responsible.

Match the change to the performance limit

If the GPU appears to be the limit

Test a lower resolution first, then reduce the visual settings that place the greatest demand on the GPU. Microsoft identifies resolution and pixel-shader demand as sources of GPU pressure. Compare one change at a time in the same scene so you can see whether average FPS or frame-time consistency improves, and decide whether the image-quality trade-off is worthwhile.

  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

If the CPU appears to be the limit

Lowering resolution or graphics quality may produce little improvement when the CPU is the constraint. Microsoft’s discussion of Windows game titles points to CPU performance and game systems as relevant limits; the useful next step depends on the particular title and system. Do not assume that every CPU/GPU reading or setting behaves the same across games.

Choose frame pacing and synchronization settings for your display

Frame-rate caps, V-Sync, and variable refresh affect more than the FPS counter. A cap can limit excess rendering and may help make delivery more consistent, but its effect depends on the game and system. V-Sync and variable-refresh features change how frames are presented; settings involve trade-offs around tearing, latency, smoothness, power use, and compatibility.

Check temperatures before buying cooling hardware

Temperature and system power can affect CPU clock speeds. If monitoring indicates high temperatures or throttling when the slowdown occurs, inspect case airflow and confirm that any cooling component you consider is compatible with your case and system. A compatible case fan may be worth considering only when measurements point to a thermal constraint; a fan is not a general FPS upgrade and will not fix shader compilation. AMD’s CPU troubleshooting guidance discusses operating temperature, system power, and custom settings as factors affecting CPU clocks. AMD: Troubleshooting CPU Performance and Temperature Issues

What shader caching can—and cannot—do

Shader precompilation and caching depend on the platform and its support. Intel says distribution of its precompiled shaders is disabled by default on supported systems. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery requires compatible Windows, GPU, driver, and storefront support; it is not a universal switch that every PC gamer can enable. Intel Precompiled Shaders · Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery overview

AMD also documents default-settings and shader-cache guidance for Radeon software. AMD: Configure AMD Radeon Settings for Ultimate Gaming Experience Availability and behavior vary, so caching guidance should not be treated as a guaranteed remedy for every hitch.

A practical order of operations

  1. Reproduce: Choose a repeatable scene or benchmark and record average FPS and frame-time behavior.
  2. Classify: Note whether performance is persistently low or interrupted by brief hitches, and check whether the issue followed a driver update or first launch.
  3. Observe: Use available overlays to check CPU/GPU activity, clocks, temperatures, and frame times across the scene.
  4. Wait when shader compilation is plausible: Allow processing to finish; for affected AMD titles, follow its approximately 15-minute gameplay recommendation before measuring.
  5. Test one matched change: Reduce resolution or demanding visual settings for a likely GPU limit; evaluate pacing and synchronization settings for smoothness.
  6. Consider hardware only with evidence: Pursue cooling changes only if temperature or throttling readings support that branch.
