To make a fitness tracker last longer between charges, start by adjusting its display, notifications, GPS use, and background measurements. Turn off only the features you can do without: exact controls vary by brand, model, and software version, and there is no guaranteed number of extra hours from any one change.
Which settings should you check first?
Look for features that keep the screen active, connect the tracker to your phone or other services, or collect data continuously. Change one setting at a time and observe whether runtime improves without losing something you rely on. Manufacturers describe these as possible battery drains, but do not provide a common test that ranks the changes or predicts added hours across devices.

Display and screen wake
- Lower screen brightness if your tracker offers a brightness control.
- Shorten the screen timeout or reduce how long the display stays awake after a wrist raise or tap.
- Turn off Always-on Display if supported and if you are comfortable raising or tapping the tracker to see the time and data.
These adjustments trade at-a-glance convenience for less display activity. Garmin’s fēnix E manual recommends reducing screen timeout; Fitbit and Apple document Always-on Display controls on supported devices. The precise menu path depends on the model. Notifications and alerts
Disable wrist notifications from apps that do not need to interrupt you. If the tracker lets you choose between sound and vibration for alerts, consider keeping just one: Garmin says using both can consume more power. Keep alerts you depend on, such as calls or important messages, rather than silencing everything by default. Samsung also provides app-notification management guidance for Galaxy Watch users. How do GPS and connected features affect battery?
GPS during workouts
GPS use during an outdoor workout can be a demanding scenario, but keep it enabled when route or location data matters. Some Fitbit models—Charge 4, Charge 5, and Charge 6—can use a nearby phone’s GPS sensors. That is a model-specific option, not a universal tracker setting; consult the instructions for your device before changing how it records location. Fitbit battery-life guidance.
Phone connections, services, and watch apps
Turn off or limit connected functions you rarely use. Garmin identifies sustained use of calls, texting, music control, and weather updates, as well as some Connect IQ watch faces, apps, widgets, and data fields, as possible drains. The feature names and available controls differ by product, so use the maker’s guide for your exact model rather than applying another brand’s menu steps.

For Apple Watch specifically, Apple says it is most efficient when connected to its paired iPhone over Bluetooth. If battery life is a priority, keep the watch and that iPhone within Bluetooth range when practical. This advice applies to Apple Watch, not trackers generally. Apple guidance for Apple Watch battery drain.
Should you use a power-saving mode?
A power-saving mode can extend runtime by reducing or disabling features, but that may also reduce the data you receive. On Apple Watch, Low Power Mode disables selected features, including Always-on Display, certain background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. During outdoor walking, running, or hiking workouts, Apple says the watch takes GPS and heart-rate readings less frequently while Low Power Mode is active. Check the mode’s description on your own device before relying on it for a workout or health measurements. Apple Watch Low Power Mode details.

Why is my tracker battery draining faster than before?
Battery use depends on the model and which features are active, so a sudden change is not automatically explained by one setting. Review recently enabled displays, alerts, workout tracking, connected services, and background measurements against the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance. If runtime has deteriorated substantially despite reasonable settings changes, follow the official support or service route for that model; do not assume the battery is user-replaceable.
On Apple Watch, check Battery Health. Apple advises contacting Apple Support if it reports “Battery Needs Service.” This is an Apple-specific diagnostic and remedy, not a general instruction for other trackers. Apple Watch battery troubleshooting.
What battery-life improvement should you expect?
There is no supported universal estimate for extra hours or days from lowering brightness, limiting alerts, changing GPS use, or enabling a power-saving mode. Official guidance identifies potential drains and trade-offs but does not establish a cross-device improvement figure. Garmin’s 30 April 2025 blog says Garmin fitness and outdoor watches should get about a week at minimum before recharging, but that is general context for Garmin products—not a benchmark for all trackers or a promise for a particular model.
