If people struggle to understand you on earbud calls in a noisy place, start by reseating the buds and clearing their microphone openings. Then check mute and call routing, move the phone closer, and adjust any call-specific ambient or transparency setting. The noise cancellation you hear is not necessarily the noise reduction your earbuds apply to your outgoing voice.
Why noise cancellation may not help the other caller
Active noise cancellation (ANC) primarily reduces the sound reaching your ears. Call noise reduction processes sound on your side of the conversation to help the recipient hear your voice. They are separate functions: earbuds can make a train quieter for you yet still transmit train noise to the person you call. Huawei explicitly distinguishes wearer-focused noise cancellation from call noise cancellation in its support guidance.

Ambient or transparency modes can also affect calls on some models by letting more surrounding sound through. The behavior and controls vary by earbuds, firmware, phone, and calling app, so look for call-specific settings rather than assuming the ANC control governs the microphone.

Reseat and orient the earbuds
Remove and reinsert both buds, then follow the maker’s wearing instructions. Samsung recommends using the correct left and right buds, positioning the microphones toward the mouth, and rotating the earbuds until they fit comfortably. Sennheiser similarly advises rotating its earbuds so the outer microphone openings align toward the mouth. These are model-specific directions, not a universal orientation rule. Check the fit and ear tips
For in-ear models with removable tips, try the supplied size that sits securely and comfortably. A poor fit can make pickup less stable and compromise noise control. Keep microphone openings unobstructed. Open-ear designs do not isolate outside noise in the same way as in-ear designs; Huawei notes that FreeArc and FreeClip cannot match in-ear or open-fit earbuds for noise isolation in its support article.

Inspect and clean the microphone openings
Check the microphone meshes and openings for wax, dust, moisture, or visible damage. Debris can muffle calls, according to Samsung and Huawei. Clean only as the manufacturer directs; do not push a pin or other sharp object into a mesh, where it could damage the microphone.

Confirm the call is not muted and routed elsewhere
Check the mute control in the calling app and on the earbuds, then confirm the phone is sending call audio to the earbuds. On some older Galaxy Buds, an earbud control can mute the microphone without an on-screen indication, Samsung warns. Huawei also identifies incorrect phone audio routing as a possible cause. The exact menus and controls depend on your phone and app.

Keep the phone nearby and assess the connection
Keep the phone close to the earbuds, particularly in a crowded area or when it would otherwise be in a bag or pocket. Samsung’s guidance is direct: “Keep your phone close to your earbuds to maintain a stable Bluetooth connection.” If audio from both sides is distorted or cuts out, a connection or signal issue is plausible. If the other caller mainly cannot understand your voice, first revisit fit, microphone openings, mute, and routing.

Try call-specific sound settings
On some Galaxy Buds, Ambient sound can pass surrounding noise through to the other party; Samsung recommends temporarily turning it off or moving somewhere quieter. Sennheiser advises disabling Transparency during Calls in very noisy settings. Find the equivalent control in the relevant earbud app or phone settings, if your model offers one. ANC may also make you speak more quietly because you hear less of your surroundings, so speaking clearly and a little louder may help on affected models.

Get out of the wind
Wind hitting a microphone directly is a particular challenge and can degrade call quality or change how noise control behaves. Move indoors or to a sheltered spot if possible. Sennheiser cautions that “wind may impact the quality of the phone call” in its MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 phone-call guidance; other manufacturers also flag wind as a concern. Avoid exposed, high-wind calls when being understood is important.

Isolate the fault, then seek model-specific help
Try another call or number. If convenient, switch the call to the phone itself or another audio route. If the problem remains after reseating, cleaning, checking settings, and installing any firmware update supported for your model, follow the manufacturer’s service guidance for that model.

What to compare if you need different earbuds
Do not use ANC branding as a proxy for how clearly your voice reaches someone else. When comparing replacement options, look for evidence about the outgoing call microphone in the places you actually call, as well as practical details that affect whether those microphones work for you.
- Outgoing voice pickup: Seek call samples or credible tests in settings similar to yours, such as a busy street or public transport. Manufacturer feature descriptions are claims, not independent head-to-head results.
- Fit and microphone position: Consider stability, tip sizes, and whether the openings remain clear and correctly oriented when worn.
- Wind handling and call controls: Check how the model handles wind and whether its app offers call-specific ambient or transparency controls.
- Phone and app compatibility: Confirm that the earbuds, phone or other device, and calling app support the advertised call features. Sennheiser says super-wideband call quality requires compatible support across the earbuds, device, and app; a narrower call mode limits the result. See its support information.
- Connection reliability: Consider how reliably the earbuds stay connected with your phone in the places you intend to use them.
For example, Jabra documents call-focused features for the Elite 7 Pro, but that does not establish that it outperforms other models in every noisy environment. Jabra also notes that microphones closer to the mouth, such as those on a boom arm or cord, may provide higher noise reduction on the receiving end of a call.
