Older MSI instructions refer to a mode called Super Battery; MSI’s current runtime guidance recommends using the power-saving scenario available for the particular laptop. If you do not see such a setting, check your model’s MSI support and download page rather than installing a different utility or following a menu path intended for another generation.
Use the utility that MSI supports for your exact product. A setting described for a different MSI laptop may not exist on your Modern, and the names of scenarios can change between software generations. If the utility shows several scenarios, choose the one identified as energy-saving or power-saving for battery use. Treat the scenario as an initial system-level adjustment, then decide whether the resulting performance is suitable for your everyday tasks.
Set Windows 11 to Best Power Efficiency
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best Power Efficiency.
- Use the laptop on battery and see whether its performance remains suitable for your work.
This mode favors lower power use over maximum performance. MSI notes that demanding workloads may be affected. If video editing or another intensive task becomes too slow, switch to a suitable power mode while doing that work, then return to Best Power Efficiency for lighter tasks or when battery runtime matters more.

The choice is a trade-off rather than a one-time commitment. Best Power Efficiency is the general power mode to try when you want to prioritize runtime. For a demanding task where performance matters more, select an appropriate mode for that task and switch back afterward if you are working unplugged. Do not interpret a temporary performance change in a heavy workload as evidence that the battery is faulty.
Use Energy saver when you want an additional reduction
Windows 11’s Energy saver can be turned on manually or configured to activate when the battery reaches a chosen level. It can limit some background activity and adjust system behavior; an option to lower screen brightness while Energy saver is active may also be available on your system. Treat it as an additional battery-saving mode, not as a replacement for choosing a general power mode.

Choose a brightness that remains comfortable and usable for your surroundings rather than dimming the screen so far that work becomes difficult. Then review the screen-off and sleep timeouts for battery use. A shorter timeout reduces the time the laptop remains active when you walk away; it does not change how much power an app uses while you are actively working.
Find apps and devices that are drawing power
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery and review Battery usage.
- Look for apps using a substantial share of battery power, especially ones you do not need running in the background.
- Close unnecessary applications and reduce avoidable background activity.
- Disconnect peripherals you are not using. Turn off wireless features only when you do not need them.
This check helps distinguish workload-related drain from a battery that has lost capacity. A demanding app, several background processes or an attached device can increase power use even when the battery itself is functioning normally. MSI identifies background activity and peripherals as possible sources of consumption, but Battery usage is a diagnostic clue rather than proof that a particular app or component is faulty.
Use the list to prioritize what to investigate, not as a reason to close every app shown. An app you actively need may account for substantial use simply because you have been using it. For a clearer check, note the settings you changed and the apps or devices you were using, then compare another ordinary battery session. There is no universal number of hours to expect from these steps: results depend on the laptop, display and workload.
Tell settings-related drain from battery wear
If the laptop still runs for unexpectedly little time after reducing power use, check its reported battery condition. MSI Center may show battery condition through System Diagnosis. Availability and presentation depend on the model and installed software.
This is the point to compare evidence from two different checks. Battery usage can help identify whether apps or activity are drawing power during use. A battery report compares the battery’s reported capacity with its design capacity. A laptop can show substantial app usage with a battery that still reports close to its design capacity, or a worn battery can run down quickly even when you have reduced avoidable activity.
Generate a Windows battery report
- Open Command Prompt.
- Enter
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Use the file location reported by Windows to open the generated battery report.
- Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity. Make sure you compare values in the same units.
Design Capacity is the reported capacity when the battery was new; Full Charge Capacity is the capacity Windows currently reports as available at a full charge. A lower full-charge figure indicates reported capacity loss. The report is an estimate of battery capacity, not a direct measurement of how many hours your particular workload will run.

Calculate reported wear
MSI’s short-battery-life troubleshooting guidance gives this formula:
(Design Capacity − Full Charge Capacity) ÷ Design Capacity × 100%
For example, MSI’s 2024 worked example uses a Design Capacity of 51,368 and a Full Charge Capacity of 49,304: (51,368 − 49,304) ÷ 51,368 × 100% = 4% reported wear. Those are figures from MSI’s example, not measurements of an MSI Modern in general.

MSI’s 2024 troubleshooting article suggests calibration when its calculated wear rate exceeds 50%. That threshold is MSI’s troubleshooting guidance; it is not a guarantee that calibration will improve runtime or restore capacity. If the reported capacity is unexpectedly low, use the calibration guidance for your exact model before deciding whether the battery needs service.
Read that figure as reported wear, not as a precise measure of remaining hours. A report that shows substantially reduced Full Charge Capacity can help explain why the laptop no longer lasts as long as it did when new, but it does not identify every cause of short runtime. Continue to account for workload and app use. MSI’s greater-than-50% calibration suggestion is a troubleshooting instruction, not a rule that a battery below that threshold is healthy or that calibration will repair a physically aged battery.
Calibrate only when the gauge or capacity report calls for it
Calibration is intended to reset battery power reporting. It may help when the displayed charge or reported capacity appears abnormally high or low, but it does not restore battery health lost through aging. MSI advises following the procedure in the utility installed for the specific laptop.
That distinction matters: calibration addresses the battery gauge or its reporting, whereas reduced physical capacity from aging is not undone by resetting the reported value. If the remaining-charge display or capacity estimate seems abnormal, calibration may be an appropriate model-specific troubleshooting step. It is not a way to add back chemically lost capacity or a substitute for service when a battery is damaged.

- Open the MSI utility supported by your laptop and locate its battery calibration instructions.
- Connect the AC adapter and leave it connected until the calibration process is complete, as MSI instructs.
- Follow the utility’s prompts rather than interrupting the process or substituting a procedure written for another MSI model.
MSI’s guidance includes two schedules based on usage: calibration every three months for laptops used mainly while plugged into AC power, and once a month for users who regularly alternate between AC and battery. These are MSI’s maintenance recommendations, not a requirement that every owner calibrate on that schedule. Calibration is a reporting and troubleshooting measure, not a routine way to increase a worn battery’s physical capacity.

Because calibration procedures are tied to the installed utility and model, do not rely on a generic sequence found for another MSI generation. Keep the adapter connected for the duration specified by the utility and let the process finish. If you are unsure whether your laptop supports a particular calibration procedure, check its MSI support information before starting.
Choose charging behavior for how you use the laptop
Charging limits are intended to manage how the battery is charged over time. They are not a way to gain more runtime from the current charge: a lower charge ceiling means the laptop will hold less than a full charge when unplugged.

Check the controls on your laptop before relying on a feature being present.

If you usually work plugged in and do not need a full charge for your next unplugged session, a supported Balanced or Best for Battery limit may suit that pattern. Remember the trade-off: a laptop capped at 80% or 60% starts an unplugged session with less stored charge than it would at 100%.
These thresholds describe charge behavior, not a promise of extra runtime during the current session. Basic overcharge protection is not the same thing as a custom Battery Master limit, and the custom options are model dependent. If Battery Master is absent, do not assume the feature can be enabled through another MSI utility or that a particular limit applies to your laptop.

Stop using a swollen or deformed battery
MSI identifies a swollen or deformed battery as abnormal and advises contacting its service center. Do not try to correct physical swelling with calibration, charging limits or power settings. If a battery replacement is needed, it must match the exact laptop model; “MSI Modern battery” is not enough to establish compatibility across generations.
Do not treat swelling as ordinary fast drain or continue troubleshooting it as a settings issue. MSI advises contacting its service center for a swollen or deformed battery.
