For other standalone headsets, look for equivalent settings and check the manufacturer’s current instructions—menu names and available controls vary by model and software version.
Enable Battery Saver on Meta Quest
Meta says Battery Saver extends runtime by reducing overall power consumption. On Meta VR devices, open Settings > General > Power and toggle Battery Saver on. The feature is designed to reduce power use, not to preserve the same display and performance settings.

- Brightness gradually drops to 40%, so the image may look dimmer.
- Fixed foveated rendering is set to level 3, which reduces rendering detail in peripheral areas.
- Display refresh rate drops to 72 Hz, which may make motion look less smooth than at a higher rate.
- Certain CPU and GPU boosts are disabled, which can affect performance.
These effects are documented for Meta VR devices; other brands may offer different controls or tradeoffs. See Meta’s Battery Saver mode guide for feature details. Do not expect a specific number of extra minutes: Meta does not give a general runtime gain for this setting.

Battery use depends on the headset, software, settings and workload, so there is no reliable runtime estimate that applies to every standalone VR session. Meta says higher CPU and GPU performance levels consume more battery and produce more heat; the system manages resources to balance performance, thermals and battery life. That explains why a demanding workload can affect runtime, but it does not establish that one particular game or mode always drains a battery fastest. Meta’s performance and hardware guidance explains the relationship.

Published runtime figures need to be read in context. Meta reported that Link efficiency improvements in a March 6, 2024 update reduced power consumption by approximately 30% during Link sessions; for Air Link, it estimated a change from 90 minutes to about 140 minutes. Meta said USB Link could see similar results depending on how much power the PC can provide. Those figures concern Quest Link sessions, not ordinary standalone play. They are not a benchmark for comparing current headsets.
A 2022 research paper introduces the Oculus Quest 2 as operating for 2–3 hours on a full charge. That is background context in the paper, not a current guarantee for every Quest 2 session or a runtime estimate for other models. The paper also reports up to 24% lower display power with little to no perceptual-fidelity degradation from an experimental gaze-contingent color-optimization technique. That is not a user-accessible setting or a promised whole-headset runtime increase.

Consider external power for longer sessions
If built-in settings do not provide enough runtime, an external USB-C battery pack or a compatible battery head strap can be an option. Check the headset maker’s current specifications and the accessory’s compatibility and output requirements before buying. A Meta Community Forums discussion mentions a Quest 3 owner using a BOBOVR external battery strap; that example does not establish fit, performance or added runtime for other headsets, nor does it constitute an official endorsement.
When battery life becomes unusually poor
If a battery that used to last normally now runs down unusually quickly, use the manufacturer’s or an authorized service provider’s guidance rather than opening the headset or attempting an internal battery replacement. PICO’s PICO 4 safety and warranty guide advises avoiding high temperatures and external pressure on the battery, and contacting PICO or an authorized service provider if standby time becomes obviously shorter than normal.
