Improve the homelab by measuring what it does today before buying replacement parts. The available description identifies an HP G3 Mini as a lightweight virtualization node and a UniFi Dream Router 7 as the gateway, firewall, and inter-VLAN router, but it does not establish the full inventory, power use, temperatures, storage layout, or workloads. That is not enough to recommend a specific CPU, cooling solution, or replacement server.
Start with the services and constraints
Write down what the lab runs and what each component does. Separate services that need to stay available from experiments or periodic jobs, then note any performance or reliability issue you have actually observed. This prevents a parts upgrade from solving a problem the setup does not have.

The known setup includes an HP G3 Mini used as a lightweight virtualization node and a UniFi Dream Router 7 handling gateway, firewall, and inter-VLAN routing duties. The available description does not establish how many systems are present or what services run on them, so those details need to come from your own inventory.
- Record each system’s model, CPU, RAM, installed drives, and network links.
- List the services running on each host and whether they must be available continuously.
- Note observed symptoms such as slow jobs, memory pressure, storage limits, network congestion, noise, or high temperatures.
- Identify backup and recovery requirements, including how quickly important services need to return after a failure.
Measure power before choosing an upgrade
Measure the complete system at the wall during idle and during representative work. An outlet power meter is a straightforward way to get a baseline; homelab owners have described using one for spot checks, but those reports are not benchmarks for your hardware (community discussion of homelab power use; community discussion of energy-focused lab design).

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
If a server has redundant power supplies, account for the whole appliance or both feeds; measuring only one supply can misstate total draw. CPU TDP is not a reliable substitute for wall measurement: the motherboard, memory, drives, PSU efficiency, firmware settings, and workload all affect system consumption.
Record idle and workload readings alongside the time and the task being run. Then estimate the ongoing cost using your local electricity rate and the hours the equipment operates. A used server’s purchase price alone does not capture electricity, heat, and noise; a recent used enterprise hardware buying guide cautions that newer, more efficient equipment can be cheaper overall once recurring power costs are included.
Decide whether every host needs to run continuously
For a machine used only for periodic backups, experiments, or media work, scheduled operation may reduce the hours it consumes. Homelab owners have described switching infrequently needed hosts on for relevant tasks, but that approach is unsuitable when a service must be continuously available or when a delayed backup would violate your recovery needs (owner discussion; owner discussion).

Before scheduling a host, check what depends on it, whether jobs can be reliably triggered, and how you will know a backup or other scheduled task completed. Do not use a smart plug or schedule to cut power to active storage or workloads. Remote switching is only a fit for non-critical equipment that can safely be shut down and brought back online.
Choose used hardware by total cost and fit
There is no evidence here establishing two specific replacement candidates or a bottleneck that would justify one. Compare any proposed server or node against the current system using measured figures and the role it must fill, rather than ranking products from specifications alone.
| Decision factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Power | Measured idle and representative-workload wall draw for the complete system. |
| Capacity | Whether CPU, RAM, storage, or network resources address an observed limitation. |
| Expansion | Available memory slots, drive connections, and PCIe capacity for the intended use. |
| Home suitability | Noise and heat in the room where the equipment will run. |
| Compatibility | Operating-system, firmware, storage-controller, and network compatibility. |
| Total cost | Purchase price plus expected electricity and any required supporting equipment. |
| Recovery | How a change affects backups, restore access, and the ability to recover services. |
A cheap enterprise system may be a poor fit in a living space if its noise or heat is unacceptable, or if its power use erases the purchase savings. Conversely, replacement is not automatically an improvement if the existing machine already meets the workload and reliability requirements.

Treat cooling and CPU changes as diagnosis, not a shopping list
The available information does not establish that the HP G3 Mini is overheating or thermally throttling. If you observe reduced performance or high temperatures, first capture the temperature and workload conditions and check whether airflow, dust, fan operation, or firmware behavior explains the symptom. A cooling change or CPU alternative should follow evidence that temperature or processor capacity is the limiting factor, and only after confirming physical and firmware compatibility for the exact system.
The original community question asks, “What second-hand cooling solutions or CPU alternatives have you implemented to address thermal throttling without replacing the entire node?” That is a useful request for other owners’ experiences, not proof that this node is throttling or that a particular part will fit.

If Proxmox Backup Server is part of the plan, use the requirements for the specific release rather than treating its recommendations as requirements for every homelab. The official Proxmox Backup Server 4.2 system requirements recommend at least four CPU cores and 4 GiB of RAM for the operating system and services, with additional memory per TiB of storage. They describe redundant ZFS as an option and state that ZFS is incompatible with hardware RAID.

Before selecting a storage layout, identify the actual controller and confirm whether it is operating in hardware RAID or another mode. Backup design also needs to account for what must be restored and how a failure will be handled; a controller or storage change can affect both the backup path and recovery process.
Be cautious when updating older production hardware
Proxmox Backup Server’s upgrade guidance says, “Compatibility of old hardware (released >= 10 years ago) is not as thoroughly tested as more recent hardware.” Its older-hardware guidance recommends testing the target release on identical or similar hardware before upgrading production systems. If an update could disrupt networking, make sure you have a way to regain console access if the system does not come back onto the network.
Quick Recap
A practical improvement sequence
- Inventory: document each host, its hardware, services, and availability requirements.
- Observe: record the specific performance, temperature, noise, or reliability symptoms you want to address.
- Measure: take whole-system wall readings at idle and under representative workloads.
- Prioritize: distinguish always-on services from tasks that could safely run on a schedule.
- Compare: evaluate a change against measured power, capacity, expansion, home suitability, compatibility, total cost, and recovery implications.
- Test safely: validate storage-controller settings and software compatibility before making a production change.
