Is the slowdown happening on one device, over Wi-Fi throughout the home, or across the satellite connection? Start by narrowing down where it begins: pause other internet use, compare devices, and check your plan and local conditions before buying new equipment.
First, find out how widespread the problem is
Check whether one device is slow or whether every device has trouble. On the affected device, restart it and make sure it is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use. If only one device is affected, the cause may be that device or its Wi-Fi link; if several devices are affected, look beyond the device.

- One device: Try another device in the same location. Check the affected device’s Wi-Fi connection and restart it.
- Wi-Fi throughout the home: Test close to the router, then compare from another room. Distance, obstacles, router placement, and other connected devices can affect Wi-Fi.
- All devices, including wired devices: Check plan usage, service conditions, modem status, weather, and provider outage information.
If your router and device have Ethernet ports, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable can help compare wired performance with Wi-Fi. A wired test isolates the Wi-Fi link; it does not increase satellite capacity or resolve congestion, weather, or plan data limits.

Measure speed under useful conditions
Before running a test, pause streaming, downloads, cloud backups, and other household internet use. Viasat specifically recommends stopping other internet activity before testing and points customers to Speedtest.net; use your provider’s own app or test if it offers one.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Run the test on one device near the router.
- Repeat it on a second device, if available, and use Ethernet for comparison if your equipment supports it.
- Record the time, download and upload results, and latency or packet loss if the test reports them.
- Repeat at a different time if performance varies, especially if the problem is worse in the evening.
A Wi-Fi test measures the connection as experienced by that device in that location. Do not treat it as a direct comparison with an advertised maximum, which may describe a different test setup or conditions.
Check your plan’s data rules and congestion
Sign in to your provider account and look at current data use, allowance, and any rules about high-speed data or reduced priority. Satellite plans do not all handle usage the same way, and terms can change.
- HughesNet says that customers who exceed their plan data may remain connected but experience slower speeds during high-traffic periods until the next billing cycle. See its slow or no connectivity guidance.
- Viasat describes plans where using high-speed data leads to slower standard data, with congestion potentially reducing speeds or priority further. Its Unleashed plan has separate language about priority when a customer’s usage trends above typical network usage. Check the terms for your own plan in the current Viasat support guidance.
If the problem follows heavy household use or a recurring busy period, reduce simultaneous high-bandwidth activity and compare results after it stops. A slow test alone cannot establish whether data rules, congestion, Wi-Fi, or another factor is responsible.

Separate Wi-Fi problems from the satellite connection
Test near the router, where the Wi-Fi signal is less affected by distance and walls. If performance improves there, try moving the router to a central, open location and away from obstacles, as Viasat advises. Also consider how many devices are active: streaming, downloads, and updates can compete for the connection.
HughesNet lists router age and capability, device Wi-Fi settings, concurrent users, and modem placement among possible factors. These are checks, not proof that a router needs replacing. The provider recommends keeping its modem upright with airflow; follow the placement and ventilation instructions for your own equipment.
Consider weather and obstacles in the signal path
Note whether interruptions coincide with severe weather. HughesNet identifies weather disturbances and objects such as trees as possible disruptions to line of sight. Viasat says light rain or snow generally should not interrupt service, while severe thunderstorms or heavy snowstorms can cause temporary loss. Weather at a distant gateway can also affect service when skies are clear at home; heavy snow or ice buildup on an antenna may impair reception. See Viasat’s weather guidance.

Look for visible changes, such as new tree growth, but do not climb onto a roof or adjust a provider-installed dish as routine troubleshooting. Contact your provider about installation or alignment concerns. Viasat says accessible antenna accumulation can be wiped off; only consider that if it is safely reachable and consistent with your provider’s instructions.
Weather-related service may recover as conditions improve. If it does not, or if the issue persists in clear conditions, contact support rather than assuming weather is the only cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check connections and restart equipment safely
- Check that the modem has power, inspect its status lights, and confirm that accessible cables are seated.
- Restart the modem using your provider’s instructions. HughesNet’s listed procedure is to unplug the modem from the wall, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in; follow your own provider’s current directions if they differ.
- Wait for the equipment to reconnect, then test again with other household activity paused.
Viasat also recommends briefly unplugging the modem. Do not repeatedly factory-reset equipment or attempt dish repairs unless provider support tells you to.

When to contact your provider
Check your provider’s outage and support channels if the connection remains slow or unstable after the basic checks. HughesNet advises contacting customer care if service does not resume after weather clears or its troubleshooting steps do not restore connectivity. Viasat directs customers to its customer-care outage channel. Starlink’s indexed support guidance recommends checking obstructions and network conditions, then opening a support ticket when basic troubleshooting does not resolve slow speeds.
When you report the issue, share information that helps support distinguish a home Wi-Fi problem from a service fault:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- When the trouble began and the times it occurs.
- Which devices are affected, and whether a wired test differs from Wi-Fi.
- Speed-test results and whether other household use was paused.
- Relevant weather and any visible obstruction changes.
- Your account’s data-use status and any modem status lights or messages.
For Starlink, the referenced slow-speeds guidance and intermittent-internet guidance were available as official indexed results; follow the current instructions in the Starlink app or support site for your account.
