You have two ways to turn Markdown into a Google Docs document: open the .md file with Google Docs (File > Open > Upload, or Open with > Google Docs in Drive), or copy the Markdown text and use Paste from Markdown. Both convert Markdown syntax such as headings, bold, italics, strikethrough and links into native Docs formatting. A newer option, announced October 5, 2026, lets you edit the .md file itself without converting it. Which route you want depends on whether you need a Google Docs document or want to keep the Markdown file.

Import a Markdown file as a Google Docs document
From Google Docs
- In Google Docs, choose File > Open > Upload and select your Markdown file.
- Google says the file uploads and opens automatically.
- Check the headings, links and any complex elements before sharing.
From Google Drive
- Upload the Markdown file to Drive.
- Right-click it and choose Open with > Google Docs.
- Review the result.
Both steps are described in Google’s Use Markdown in Google Docs, Slides & Drawings help page. Google documents the workflow but doesn’t publish a full compatibility list for every Markdown dialect or extension.

Convert copied Markdown with Paste from Markdown
- Copy the Markdown source text.
- Open a Google Doc in a computer browser.
- If the option is missing, go to Tools > Preferences and enable Markdown.
- Right-click in the document and choose Paste from Markdown.
Google says this converts the Markdown to Docs content as it pastes. When Google announced Markdown import and export on July 16, 2024, import and export were on by default, while Copy as Markdown and Paste from Markdown were off by default and had to be enabled in preferences. Your own settings may differ if they were changed since.

On October 5, 2026, Google announced that you can view, edit and collaborate on .md and .markdown files in Docs without changing the file type, and that Drive can show rendered Markdown previews. This applies to Google Workspace customers and personal Google accounts.

This is not conversion. Google’s help page View and edit Markdown (.md) files in Google Docs states: “Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file.” The file remains an .md file. If you need a native Docs document, use the import or paste methods above.
Rollout began October 5, 2026 and can take up to 15 days across Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, so your account may not have it yet. Until it appears, opening a .md file may follow the older import behavior.

If a Docs feature alters your file, use version history to restore the original.

Google’s Markdown documentation describes support for italics, bold, strikethrough, links and headings. It gives no exhaustive fidelity statement for tables, embedded images, task lists, fenced code blocks, front matter or dialect-specific syntax. If any of those matter, inspect the converted document and keep your original .md file as a backup.

A quick check after converting
- Heading levels match the original hash marks.
- Links are clickable and point to the right URLs.
- Tables, code blocks, images and checklists still look right.
- No raw Markdown symbols (such as asterisks or backticks) remain visible.
