For editable content, paste from Word into the block editor or use a DOCX importer plugin. WordPress’s standard Tools > Import feature is documented for content from other websites and publishing systems—not as a native DOCX-to-post command.
Choose what you want WordPress to do with the DOCX
- Create an editable post or page: paste the document into the block editor, or use a DOCX importer plugin.
- Offer the original document for download: upload the DOCX to the Media Library and link to it from a post or page. Uploading the file does not convert its text into WordPress blocks.
WordPress’s import handbook describes using Tools > Import to bring content from another WordPress site or publishing system; for a WordPress-to-WordPress migration, it specifies a WXR file. It does not document a built-in DOCX importer.
Make an editable post by copying and pasting
- In WordPress, create or edit a post or page in the block editor.
- In Microsoft Word, select and copy the content you want to publish.
- Paste it into the WordPress editor.
- Review the resulting headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links, images, and spacing. Fix anything that did not transfer as intended before publishing.
WordPress notes that material pasted from document editors such as Microsoft Word can contain formatting the editor does not recognize. If the editor offers Clear unknown formatting, you can use it and then inspect the layout again. Do not assume that every Word layout feature will be preserved exactly.
For images, select each one in the editor and check that it is stored in your Media Library. WordPress says copied images may upload automatically and documents an upload-to-Media-Library control for checking or saving them. See its block editor documentation for editor guidance.

Convert a DOCX with an importer plugin
The WordPress.org listing for DocxToPost describes a workflow for uploading and previewing a DOCX, then turning its contents into WordPress blocks. The listing says it supports posts, pages, and registered public post types permitted by the user’s role. It describes output for headings, paragraphs, lists, images, tables, and quotes, and says embedded images are uploaded to the Media Library. These are claims made on the plugin’s directory page, not independently verified results.
- Open the WordPress admin area and go to Plugins > Add New.
- Find DocxToPost, review its current compatibility and maintenance details, and install it—or upload its plugin files if you obtained them separately.
- Activate the plugin and open its admin menu.
- Upload the DOCX, inspect the preview, and create the post, page, or supported post type.
- Review the created content in the editor, including images and any complex or nonstandard formatting, before publishing.
Plugin features and version information can change. Check the current WordPress.org listing before installing, and consult WordPress’s plugin management guidance. WordPress recommends keeping a current backup before plugin updates.

Upload a DOCX for visitors to download
- Upload the DOCX through the Media Library or from the post editor.
- Add a link to the uploaded file, or use a File block where available.
- Open the published page and test the link to confirm the file can be downloaded.
WordPress supports document files as media and allows uploads through its admin media screens. This keeps the DOCX as a downloadable file; it does not turn its text into editable WordPress blocks. See the Media Library documentation for details.

Formatting looks wrong after pasting
Look for the editor’s Clear unknown formatting control if it appears, then review the content again. Recheck headings, lists, tables, links, and spacing manually.

Images are missing or not stored in WordPress
Select each image in the editor and verify that it is in the Media Library. Use the editor’s upload-to-Media-Library control to save it when needed.
The DOCX or an image will not upload
Check the file and upload process, and verify that the site has the permissions WordPress needs. WordPress notes that correct permissions for the wp-content directory may be necessary for media uploads.

A large import fails or appears incomplete
WordPress warns that large imports can exhaust server memory. A failed import may still have created some content, so inspect posts and pages before retrying; otherwise, a second attempt could leave duplicates. The import handbook covers these import cautions.
