To use class notes with a local AI study assistant, either attach a file to one chat or import it into a reusable knowledge collection. Start with a small, text-readable file, check that the assistant can retrieve a passage accurately, and confirm where the model, document extractor, and embedding service run if offline processing matters.
Choose: attach one file or build a reusable library?
A chat interface, language model, document extractor, and embedding service can be separate parts of a document-chat setup. Importing a course PDF into the interface does not, by itself, make it reusable across chats or prove that every processing step stays on your computer.

Use a direct attachment for a short, self-contained file. Choose a knowledge collection when you need the same notes in separate chats. Full-text input can provide the whole short file to the model, while retrieval selects portions of an indexed collection; neither approach removes the need to check the answer against the source.

Start with one readable file
- Choose a small, non-sensitive note or PDF. A plain-text document is a useful first test. For a PDF, try selecting and copying a sentence; if the result is garbled or empty, the file may be image-only or poorly extracted.
- Import it using the path that matches your goal. In AnythingLLM, drag a file into a chat or use the prompt’s plus control for a thread-scoped attachment. To reuse it, add it as an embedded document in the workspace. In Open WebUI, create a Knowledge Base, upload the file, and wait for processing to finish.
- Ask a question with a visible answer. Ask for the supporting passage, then compare it with the original page or note. Follow up with a question whose answer is not in the file and see whether the assistant says so.
The AnythingLLM instructions describe the attachment and embedded-document behavior for version 1.8.5 and above. Open WebUI’s documented workflow is to upload a small text-based PDF or text file, wait for processing, then refer to the Knowledge Base with # in chat or attach it to a model. Make scanned PDFs searchable before importing
A scanned PDF may contain page images rather than selectable text. A language model cannot reliably answer questions about words that the extraction step never captured. Run OCR or another text-extraction step first, then inspect the extracted output—not just whether the import completed.
- Check whether sentences, headings, and page order survived extraction.
- Inspect tables, multi-column lecture slides, and notes with labels or diagrams; these are especially vulnerable to scrambled reading order.
- Correct or replace a poor OCR result before relying on answers drawn from it.
If your notes are on paper, scan them into a searchable PDF using OCR; a scanner with OCR is an optional way to create that file, not a requirement when you already have readable digital notes. A larger chat model cannot reconstruct text omitted by OCR or extraction. LocalAI.computer: Chat with your documents locally.

Verify answers instead of trusting retrieval alone
Retrieval can surface useful passages, but a citation or source reference is a lead to check, not proof that the answer is correct or complete. Keep the original notes and verify important claims in context.

- Ask one narrow question whose answer is plainly stated in the source.
- Request the passage or source reference supporting the answer.
- Open that location in the original file and check wording, page context, and any table or surrounding text.
- Ask about a detail absent from the file and check whether the assistant acknowledges that the source does not say.
For tasks that require a complete inventory, every record, or an exact total, do not treat a conversational answer as proof that every page was inspected. Check what “local” means in your setup
“Local AI” can describe the language model without describing every service that handles the document. Extraction, embeddings, and model inference may use different providers. Confirm each provider’s configuration if keeping course files on your computer or chatting offline is important.
- Open WebUI: its slim image requires an embedding provider for knowledge retrieval and an external extractor or cloud engine for PDFs and Office files. Its standard image can perform extraction in its own container. These are configuration-specific differences, not a guarantee that all processing is local. Open WebUI: Quick Start.
- Offline check: after configuration, disconnect from the network and try a sample import and question. A successful sample is a useful check, not a full privacy audit; verify provider settings and any other services your installation uses. LocalAI.computer: Chat with your documents locally.
- AnythingLLM model setup: importing a language model is separate from importing class documents. AnythingLLM’s documentation says its desktop version can load a text-based GGUF model directly; for browser-based AnythingLLM, it recommends loading a model into a local provider such as Ollama or LM Studio. AnythingLLM: Importing Custom LLMs into AnythingLLM.
A desktop application may simplify a single-computer workflow, while a self-hosted web setup can expose more provider and extraction configuration. Neither label alone establishes where every document-processing stage runs. Open WebUI’s product-authored comparison lists features, but it is not an independent product evaluation. When an import fails or answers look wrong
- The assistant cannot find text in a scanned page: inspect whether text can be selected or extracted, then OCR the file and check the result.
- A short attachment yields incomplete or confused answers: the file may be too large for full-text insertion in the model’s context. Use a knowledge collection for retrieval, or split and check the material when you need focused answers.
- A knowledge-base answer omits a detail: inspect the retrieved sources and original pages. A collection does not guarantee that every relevant chunk was retrieved.
- Offline use fails: check the configured model, embedding provider, and extraction service. The interface and model being on your machine does not mean the other processing components are.
