To import a list of locations as map features, use Google My Maps on a computer. Create or open a map, add a layer, and import a supported file or Google Sheet with a header row and a location column. My Maps is the custom-map tool; its maps can also be viewed in Google Maps on a computer.
What you need before importing
A supported file or source
Google My Maps lists CSV, TSV, KML, KMZ, GPX, XLSX, and Google Sheets as supported data sources. It also supports importing photos from Google Drive or Google Photos. For data files, keep the first row for column titles.

A column that identifies each location
Include a column containing latitude and longitude, an address, a place name, or WKT-formatted geometry. CSV files and Google Sheets can use WKT geometry; Google says the WKT column should be named WKT. During import, select that column when prompted so My Maps reads it as geometry.

Google’s stated import limits
- Google says not to import files with more than 2,000 rows.
- Unzipped KML and KMZ files can be up to 5 MB; other supported file types can be up to 40 MB.
- You can import up to 100 photos at a time.
These limits are listed in Google’s My Maps import help; the help page does not state when the figures were published.

Import a spreadsheet or file into My Maps
- Prepare the data. Choose a supported format, add column titles in the first row, and include a location column. For WKT geometry, use a column titled
WKT. - Open My Maps on a computer. Sign in and open a map you created, viewed, or that someone shared with you, or choose Create a new map. Google’s instructions for opening and creating maps are at Create or open a map.
- Add a layer. In the map legend, click Add layer and give the layer a name.
- Start the import. Click Import beneath the new layer.
- Select the source. Upload the file or select the available source and confirm. If asked which column contains WKT geometry, choose the WKT column.
- Inspect the map. Check that the imported features appear in the expected places and that the layer contains the intended records.
Choose the right option when refreshing a layer
For CSV and Google Sheets data, My Maps offers several reimport choices. They change what happens to existing features, so choose based on whether you want to replace, update, or append data. Google documents these behaviors in its import instructions.

| Merge matching items | Combines datasets using a shared or matching column. | Joining related data where both sources contain a reliable shared key, such as state codes. |
For matching or merging, use a stable shared identifier when possible. Google’s instructions ask you to select corresponding columns; they do not promise fuzzy matching for differently formatted versions of the same address.

Fix common import problems
The file will not import
Confirm that the file type is supported, the data file has a header row, and at least one column contains a recognized location format. If you are importing from Drive and it does not open, Google advises allowing https://mymaps.google.com/ to open Drive.

WKT text behaves differently after import
My Maps interprets the selected WKT column as geometry during import, rather than treating it as ordinary text. Google cautions that editing that column afterward may be difficult.

A complex KML file loses content
Some KML content may not carry over, including HTML or JavaScript in info balloons, tours, time-based elements, image and screen overlays, MultiGeometries, 3D models, and folders. If those elements matter, do not assume the imported map will reproduce the full KML file.
You cannot find My Maps in the phone app
The documented import workflow is for a computer. Google says My Maps is not available on Android or iPhone and iPad; see its platform availability help. This is not an import workflow in the Google Maps phone app.
