Mask one element in a Playwright screenshot assertion
Use a stable locator for the specific element you want to exclude, then include it in the mask array passed to toHaveScreenshot():

Choose a locator that identifies only the target
The example uses a test ID, but any locator that reliably selects the intended element can be used. Prefer a stable, specific selector over a broad selector that might match several elements or change as the page layout evolves.

What the mask changes
By default, the mask paints the element’s bounding box pink (#FF00FF) in the screenshot used for comparison. It hides the element’s visual content under a solid rectangle; it does not preserve the element and compare its appearance. Because that area is excluded visually, a regression inside it will not be detected by this screenshot assertion.
Hide the element instead of covering it
If you want the element removed from the screenshot rather than covered by a mask, use the assertion’s stylePath option to apply a stylesheet during capture. The stylesheet can hide a dynamic element or adjust its appearance for the snapshot. Keep the selector narrow, and remember that this changes the page’s visual styling for the screenshot.

For example, create a stylesheet such as tests/screenshot.css containing a rule for the target selector, then pass that stylesheet to the screenshot assertion:

What Playwright does to stabilize screenshot assertions
Before comparing a screenshot with its expected snapshot, Playwright waits until two consecutive page screenshots produce the same result, then compares the last capture. Screenshot assertions also disable animations by default. These measures help with capture stability, but they do not make changing application data deterministic: use a controlled test state when the data itself should be predictable.
When to use another visual-testing workflow
The built-in mask is usually the simplest choice when you already use Playwright Test and need to exclude one locator. Teams using a hosted visual-testing integration can also use that service’s region-exclusion features:

These are optional routes for teams adopting those broader workflows; neither is required to mask a locator in a Playwright Test assertion.
Troubleshoot a mask that does not behave as expected
- The element is still visible in the comparison: Confirm that the locator points to the changing element and that it is passed in the
maskarray on the screenshot assertion. - The wrong area is covered: Make the locator more specific so it targets only the intended element. A mask covers the selected element’s bounding box.
- The baseline still fails: Masking suppresses visual differences only within the covered area. Check the rest of the page for other changes, and make changing application data deterministic where appropriate.
- You want no rectangle in the capture: Use
stylePathwith a targeted stylesheet rule to hide or alter the element rather than masking it.
