Reg-suit compares image files; its documented core configuration does not provide a per-element or per-region ignore setting. To keep changing content from creating noisy diffs, make it stable or hide or replace it in the browser capture step, then give the prepared screenshot to reg-suit.
Where dynamic-content handling belongs
Reg-suit is a command-line interface for visual regression testing. Its workflow takes current screenshots from the configured actualDir, fetches expected images into its working directory, compares the images, and produces an HTML difference report. The official README’s documented core options include comparison thresholds and other comparison settings, but do not list a selector, rectangle, or region-ignore option: reg-suit README.

The official Puppeteer demo likewise creates screenshot files first and then configures reg-suit to compare them: Puppeteer demo. That places handling of timestamps, rotating ads, live counts, and similar content in your page setup or screenshot-generation code—not in reg-suit itself.
Choose how to stabilize the changing area
| Approach | When to use it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Use fixed data or state | The changing value can be controlled by a fixture, stable test account, or test environment. | This preserves the element and its layout while making its content predictable. |
| Freeze a relevant clock | The difference is caused by time-dependent content and your test setup can control the clock. | Keep the frozen time relevant to the behavior under test; time-dependent behavior may need separate tests. |
| Hide or replace the element before capture | The content must remain live in the application, but is irrelevant to this particular visual comparison. | Prefer preserving its space if dimensions affect alignment. Hiding or removing it can mask real layout or style regressions. |
Use the narrowest intervention that removes the unwanted variation. If the live count itself is under test, for example, do not hide it in the comparison intended to verify that count.

Prepare the screenshot before reg-suit compares it
- Identify the source of variation. Determine which element changes independently of the UI under test, and decide whether the test should verify its content, its layout, both, or neither.
- Prefer deterministic inputs. Use fixed fixture data, a stable account or state, or a controlled clock when feasible.
- Otherwise target only the volatile element. In your browser automation or capture code, hide it or replace its content before taking the screenshot. Preserve its dimensions when surrounding alignment is part of what the test should check.
- Write the prepared image to
actualDir. Keep the expected baseline generated under equivalent conditions. - Run reg-suit normally. It compares the supplied image files; it does not need to know how you stabilized the page before capture.
The exact selector and code depend on your page and screenshot framework. The reg-suit README and Puppeteer demo establish the image-directory workflow, not a built-in masking API.
Do not use thresholds as region masks
Options such as thresholdRate and thresholdPixel adjust tolerated image differences; they do not mean “ignore this timestamp” or exclude a selected rectangle. Raising tolerance can also make unrelated visual regressions easier to miss. Keep threshold tuning separate from the task of suppressing one known volatile element.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
Likewise, reg-suit’s S3 and GCS publisher plugins concern snapshot storage. They do not change which screenshot pixels are compared.
Troubleshoot noisy or misleading diffs
- The same region changes on every run: Check whether its data, time, account state, ad, or recommendation is uncontrolled. Stabilize the source or handle that one region before capture.
- Content is stable but nearby layout shifts: Check whether your hide/remove step changed the element’s dimensions. Preserve its space if the surrounding geometry matters.
- A broad threshold makes the report quieter: Reconsider it. A global tolerance is not a targeted ignore rule and can hide changes outside the dynamic region.
- You cannot find a selector or rectangle setting in reg-suit: The documented core configuration does not list one. Apply the change in the screenshot-generation step instead.
- The report differs despite using fixed data: Check that the baseline and current image use equivalent page state and capture preparation. Reg-suit compares the files it receives, so inconsistent upstream capture conditions remain visible as image differences.
Or skip the browser setup
