To explode TNT in Minecraft, place a TNT block and use flint and steel on it. For a remote trigger, use redstone to power the TNT directly or power a neighboring block. Once lit, move clear: the Microsoft Minecraft Creator guide gives redstone-activated TNT a 40-redstone-tick fuse.
Ignite TNT with flint and steel
- Place a TNT block where you want the explosion.
- Hold flint and steel and use it on the TNT. Minecraft’s official flint-and-steel article confirms this ignition method.
- Move away from the TNT after lighting it.
Flint and steel is a direct, hands-on method. Because it uses fire, avoid lighting TNT beside wooden structures, forests, or other flammable blocks; fire can spread.

Trigger TNT with redstone
- Place TNT and set up a redstone signal for it.
- Power the TNT directly, or power a block next to it. The Microsoft Minecraft Creator redstone guide describes both activation routes.
- Move clear once the TNT is activated.
The Microsoft guide states a 40-redstone-tick fuse for redstone-activated TNT. That figure is specific to the guide’s described mechanic; it is not a fuse time for every ignition method.
Which ignition method should you use?

Keep clear and account for edition differences
- Give yourself room to move away after priming TNT, especially in Survival.
- Do not assume fire-based ignition is safe near wooden builds or forests.
- Underwater behavior can depend on the edition: the community tutorial says ordinary TNT underwater damages entities but not terrain, and notes a separate underwater TNT variant in Minecraft Education. Check the exact edition before relying on that behavior.
- Snapshot mechanics are not general rules for stable releases. In Java 26.2 Snapshot 5, TNT absorbed by a Sulfur Cube has special priming rules: redstone or fire sources produce a six-second fuse, while a nearby explosion produces a randomized fuse from 0.75 to 3 seconds. Those details apply to that snapshot-specific case, not ordinary TNT.
For ordinary TNT, use flint and steel for a straightforward manual ignition or redstone for a trigger that can be built into a mechanism. In either case, move away after activation.
