To identify a vintage Kenner Star Wars figure, examine the character and sculpt, record its copyright and country-of-origin marks, then compare paint, construction and accessories with a character-specific reference. No single stamp, color or accessory proves that a figure is original: a copyright date may predate manufacture by years, and weapons can be reproductions.
Start by identifying the exact figure
First record the character, clothing, pose, sculpt details, paint colors, construction and any accessory present. A character name alone is not enough: one character can have multiple production variants, and licensed products made outside Kenner, bootlegs and modern reproductions can resemble vintage figures. Variant Villain’s 101 Reference Guide distinguishes original production variation from age-related changes, non-Kenner licensed production, bootlegs and newer reproductions.

Photograph the figure from several angles, including its face, hands, feet, back and any markings. Keep accessories separate while you identify them; an apparently matching weapon does not establish that the figure itself is authentic or that the accessory originally came with it.

Copyright or date stamp
Look for a copyright or date mark, often on a leg. Record its exact wording and location. A date generally identifies the design-patent year, not necessarily the year that particular figure was made. In a guide dated October 27, 2021, Chihuahua of Variant Villain explains: “A figure with a 1977 date stamp could be produced many years later in 1983 for example, but the copyright is still in effect from 1977.” A 1977 mark, by itself, therefore does not establish manufacture in 1977.

Country of origin and stamp layout
Record the country-of-origin (COO) wording as well as the copyright mark. Examples reported by Variant Villain include Hong Kong, Made in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Made in Taiwan, Macau and China. Some later releases may have no COO, or an area where a mark appears to have been removed or modified. Note whether the mark is intact, absent, altered or difficult to read instead of treating “has stamp” as a complete identification.
Mark position and spacing can vary: the collector guide notes that tools were distributed among factories and that mould cavities could carry hand-stamped dates and COO marks. Those differences can help compare figures, but a mark’s wording or location alone is not a universal factory, date or authenticity test.

Compare more than one production clue
Once you have recorded the marks, compare the figure with a reference for that specific character and variant. Check whether the sculpt details, paint and mark layout agree with the reference together. The collector guide also points to sculpt differences as clues for tracing figure or accessory production.

A paint difference is more persuasive when other details also line up with a documented variant; color alone cannot distinguish production variation from later change.

Identify weapons and accessories on their own
Accessories need their own comparison because original pieces have variations and reproductions exist. The Imperial Gunnery presents a visual guide to original items and reproductions and warns that improved reproduction quality and materials can make identification harder. Its overview describes the vintage action-figure line as running for eight years; that broad span is not a production count and says nothing by itself about an individual item.
- Confirm the expected accessory. Use a character-specific figure and accessory reference rather than assuming that a familiar-looking weapon belongs with the figure.
- Compare its mould details and form. Look for the visible shape and detail that the reference shows; do not decide from a single superficial feature.
- Consider material and uncertainty. Compare the material where the reference provides a basis, but do not treat appearance alone as conclusive when reproductions can be difficult to detect.
The Imperial Gunnery’s reference site is one resource for comparing original items and reproductions. If a piece remains ambiguous, describe it as unconfirmed and seek comparison with a specialist reference or an experienced collector rather than presenting a guess as authentication.

Why character-specific examples matter
The High As A Koit Luke Skywalker Farmboy variant comparison illustrates why a label such as “Hong Kong” is too broad on its own: it distinguishes examples using stamp placement, paint and hair details, and lists examples across different card-back eras. Use it as an illustration of the kinds of clues to compare, not as a current or exhaustive catalog; its displayed last-updated value appears broken.
A Smithsonian collection search result describes a Kenner A New Hope Jawa dated 1977 and made in Hong Kong, and says both the vinyl-cape and cloth-cape versions included a blaster. This is a useful example of why the precise variant and accessory matter, but the full item page was unavailable for review, so the record should be treated only as described in that search result.

What you can—and cannot—conclude
- A mark is a clue, not proof. A date stamp can refer to the design-patent year rather than the figure’s production year.
- A single visual difference is not enough. Paint, mould, markings and accessory form are most useful when compared together against a character-specific reference.
- Age and authenticity are separate questions. Wear or discoloration may reflect aging, while an old-looking figure may still be a bootleg, another licensed product or a modern reproduction.
- Accessories can be reproductions. Even a plausible-looking weapon should be identified separately from the figure.
Without examining the physical item and comparing its details with appropriate references, a remote identification should remain provisional. The evidence here does not establish a universal test, current market value or rarity for any particular figure.
