NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide is a practical starting point for animals seen on the seafloor, but a visual resemblance is a candidate identification—not proof of a species.
Start with evidence, not a species guess
A species-level identification is only as strong as the features the image actually shows. Deep-sea footage may be dim, distant, partially obscured, or captured from an angle that hides diagnostic anatomy. Begin by separating what you can see from what you suspect: for example, “soft-bodied, radial shape, several visible arms” is an observation; a species name is a conclusion that needs support.

Keep the original image or video file whenever possible. Save the sharpest full-resolution frame and, for video, a short sequence around the observation. Multiple frames can reveal the animal’s outline, appendages, orientation, and movement, details a single still may not show. Note whether it is resting on the seafloor or moving through the water column; NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide is specifically a reference for benthic animals.

Preserve the sequence as well as the still so another person can revisit the same moment and evaluate the same evidence.

Keep the original resolution rather than relying only on a cropped, compressed, or annotated copy. A crop can make a detail easier to inspect, but it also removes context and may make a subject seem larger or more sharply defined than it is. If you make a crop or mark a feature, retain the unaltered source and make clear which version is being discussed.
Make a short observation record
- Write down visible features in neutral language: body shape, symmetry, apparent number and arrangement of appendages, texture, and any distinctive structures.
- Record whether the animal is on the seafloor or in open water, and whether the video shows movement or more than one angle.
- Keep the timestamp and original resolution with the frame so the observation can be checked against its source footage.
- Do not treat color alone as decisive. Lighting, camera illumination, distance, and image processing can change how a subject appears.
A compact observation note can be as simple as: source file and timestamp; visible setting; body outline and structures that can actually be resolved; known depth and location; and any details that remain uncertain. This is not a formal taxonomic description. Its purpose is to make the evidence and the limits of that evidence clear before a name influences what you notice.
It is useful to keep observations and interpretations in separate lines. “Several arms are visible” records what the frame shows; “this may be a particular group” records a hypothesis. If you later find a better comparison, you can revise the hypothesis without rewriting the underlying observation.
Record location, depth, and observation context
Context narrows the set of plausible matches. Note the depth, coordinates or locality, ocean basin or region, and the video or dive timestamp. If available, also preserve environmental information such as temperature, salinity, or oxygen. NOAA’s guide associates animal observations with latitude and longitude, depth, ocean, region, and locality, and includes environmental conditions where known. NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide provides the reference context and search options.
Keep the observation’s provenance attached to the image. A frame separated from its dive, location, or depth is harder to compare responsibly, even if it looks clear. If you do not know the exact coordinates or environmental conditions, record what is known rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
For instance, if the footage identifies a locality and depth but not temperature or oxygen, retain the locality and depth and mark the other fields as unavailable. Missing metadata should not be replaced with a guess. It is better to compare a candidate using the context you have and be explicit about what is missing than to imply that the match has been checked against information you do not possess.
Location and depth are filters, not diagnoses. A record from a similar setting may make a candidate worth comparing, but context alone does not establish identity. Likewise, a record from a different setting is a reason to examine the match carefully, not necessarily enough by itself to rule it out. Give the visible anatomy and the documented context their proper, separate roles.

The guide’s images come from seafloor video recorded by the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer during Okeanos Explorer expeditions. They are in situ images clipped from ROV video, rather than isolated illustrations. The guide can be searched by taxon, keyword, depth, and location; NOAA also makes images downloadable by ocean basin with an associated CSV file. Start with the guide as a way to locate comparable observations, not as a guarantee that every deep-sea animal will be represented. Its taxonomic organization can help you move from a broad visible body plan toward a narrower set of possible groups. Its keyword, depth, and location searches can then help you compare records with the setting of your own observation. If you are working from downloaded images, the associated CSV gives you a way to retain and consult the records alongside the visual material.
- Choose a broad group first. Use the visible body plan and appendages to decide what broad taxonomic group is plausible. Avoid jumping straight to a genus or species based on overall resemblance.
- Search by context. Use the guide’s keyword, depth, and location options to find records from comparable settings. If you know the taxonomic group, browse its organization as well.
- Compare several records. Look for matches in anatomy and body structure, not just similar color or silhouette. Prefer references that show comparable in situ views and include observation context.
- Check what the reference actually identifies. Record the identification level and any available context rather than treating every image label as a confirmed species determination.
- Keep the candidate record. Save the reference entry or its identifying details alongside your frame, timestamp, location, and depth.
When a search returns no convincing match, change the search approach rather than forcing a name. Try a broader taxonomic group or a descriptive keyword, and consider whether you have the right depth or location information to use the filters effectively. A failed search is useful information about the limits of that comparison; it is not a finding that the animal is new or absent from a region.
The guide’s images are valuable partly because they show animals in situ. Even so, compare like with like where possible: the subject’s orientation, distance, visibility, and view of diagnostic structures matter. A similar-looking image taken under very different viewing conditions may be less informative than a less striking image that clearly displays the relevant anatomy.

Guide coverage is bounded by the expeditions and animals represented in it. Not finding a match does not show that an animal is new, absent from that region, or impossible to identify; it may simply be outside this image collection.
Compare candidates by diagnostic traits
When two or more animals look plausible, compare them systematically. Start with the feature most likely to distinguish them and ask whether it is visible in your own footage. A trait that is hidden, blurred, or too distant to resolve cannot support a confident identification.
| Comparison | What to check |
|---|---|
| Visible anatomy | Does the frame show the structures that distinguish the candidate groups, or only a general outline? |
| Additional views | Do other frames or movement reveal features that the still conceals? |
| Depth and geography | Is the candidate documented in a comparable depth range and ocean or locality? |
| Reference type | Is the comparison an in situ observation rather than an image with substantially different viewing conditions? |
| Identification level | Does the reference support a broad group, a genus, or a species, and how confidently is it recorded? |
Use the same questions for every candidate rather than giving the first plausible match special treatment. For each one, note which visible traits support it, which expected traits cannot be checked, whether other frames add useful evidence, and whether its depth and location context are comparable. That makes it easier to see when a candidate is supported by several independent clues and when it rests mainly on a general resemblance.
Do not let one striking resemblance outweigh conflicting evidence. A candidate that matches color but not visible structure, or that is a poor fit for the recorded location and depth, deserves less confidence than a candidate supported by several independent traits.
Color can help you describe an image, but it should not carry the identification by itself. Illumination, distance, and image processing may affect apparent color, so ask whether the structural features that distinguish the candidates are actually visible. The same caution applies to silhouette: a partial view can make different forms look alike, especially when key structures are hidden.

There is also a difference between a reference record being a close visual comparison and that record establishing the same species. Check the identification level recorded by the reference and how its identification was supported. A guide label may give you a useful candidate, but the strength of your own conclusion still depends on what your footage shows.
Use scale carefully
Apparent size in an underwater image depends on distance and camera geometry, so a subject that looks large or small is not a dependable measurement by itself. NOAA describes paired red laser dots on the ROV, spaced 10 centimeters apart, as a way to measure organisms when those points are visible. NOAA’s explanation of collecting and visualizing deep-sea data describes the laser scale reference.
Use that spacing only when the dots and the animal are in a suitable imaging relationship. Without a known reference in the same imaging geometry, report apparent size cautiously or leave it unmeasured.
The presence of two dots is not a reason to estimate size if their relationship to the animal in the image is unclear. If you cannot use the reference confidently, omit a precise measurement rather than treating apparent image dimensions as a real-world size. A cautious note that size is unknown is more useful than a measurement whose basis cannot be checked.
Know when to stop at a broader identification
NOAA says guide identifications were made during live ROV dives and afterward through close examination of images and collected samples. Its guide is periodically updated to correct errors, reflect accepted taxonomic revisions, and incorporate newly described species. Those practices matter because an image can support different levels of certainty: a broad animal group may be recognizable even when the details needed to establish a species are not.
If your footage does not show diagnostic features, label the observation at the highest level the evidence supports—for example, a broad group—or mark it unidentified. Do not turn a close visual match into a definitive species claim. Expert confirmation may require clearer imagery, additional views, environmental context, or a specimen.
Think of identification as a ladder rather than a forced choice between a species name and no information at all. A broad group may be defensible when the image shows its general body plan; a narrower identification requires the features that distinguish that narrower group. If those details are not visible, stop at the broader level. This preserves what the observation does establish while avoiding certainty that the image cannot support.

It is also reasonable for confidence to differ among parts of a record. You may be confident that an animal is benthic because it is shown on the seafloor, while uncertain about its taxonomic group; or you may recognize a broad group while lacking the detail to name a species. State those limits directly rather than using a single confident label to conceal uncertainty.

The guide’s scope is useful but not exhaustive. It documents animals recorded on particular Okeanos Explorer expeditions and across represented ocean basins, and its coverage is expanded over time. A missing match is not evidence that the animal is new or that it does not occur in the area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep an identification trail others can check
A defensible identification should be reproducible. Keep the original image or video, selected frame and timestamp, available location and depth metadata, the candidate reference record, and your confidence level together. If you share an identification, distinguish direct observations from interpretation—for example, list the visible traits first and then say which guide record appears closest.
One practical way to do this is to preserve a small record for each candidate rather than only writing down your preferred name. Include the source frame, the time in the video, known setting and depth, the reference entry you compared, and the traits that do or do not match. Note whether a feature is clearly visible, partly visible, or not visible. That simple distinction helps a later reviewer understand why you chose a broad identification or stopped short of a species name.
Keep the record even if you later change your mind. Taxonomic understanding and guide entries can change, and a transparent trail lets someone see what evidence was available when the identification was made. If the candidate is revised, the original observation remains useful as long as the frame and its context are preserved.
NOAA invites corrections and expert input on the guide. If you believe a guide entry is incorrect or can contribute a correction, provide the frame or record in question and enough observation context for an expert to review it. The guide’s landing page describes its scope and how to provide input: Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide, Version 4.
What NOAA’s guide can—and cannot—establish
NOAA reported that the guide had grown from 1,685 images at launch to 6,322 still images in its January 31, 2024 update; that figure is a dated count, not a current total. The same update said there were over 3,000 identified species of deep-sea coral, which is a coral-specific statement, not a count of all deep-sea animal species. NOAA’s January 2024 guide update provides those figures.
Those counts show the guide’s development and the scale of the coral group NOAA discussed; they do not turn the image set into a complete checklist. The guide is built from particular expeditions and taxa represented in the collection. Its usefulness is that it gives a traceable, expanding set of in situ comparisons with observation context—not that every animal can be found there or that every image resolves to species level.
NOAA also says the imagery is being used to train AI for automated detection. Detection is not the same as a reliable species-level identification, and that use does not establish that AI can identify every animal. For a visual observation, the careful process remains to preserve evidence, compare anatomy and context, and state uncertainty honestly.
Best Value
For an identification task, start with NOAA’s freely accessible online reference and downloadable imagery rather than assuming you need to buy a tool. No current official listing identifies a specific product, paid service, or commercial partner as improving identification of a photo or video already in hand. The essential work is careful documentation, relevant comparison, and appropriate restraint about the level of certainty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I identify a deep-sea animal from a photo or video?
Save the original, clearest frame or a short video sequence; record the timestamp, depth, location, and whether the animal is on the seafloor or in the water column; describe visible anatomy before choosing a name; then compare it with relevant in situ references such as NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide. Treat a close match as a candidate, and use only the identification level the image supports.
Can I identify a deep-sea animal from a still image alone?
Sometimes a still shows enough anatomy to support a broad identification, but a single view may hide diagnostic features. Other frames can reveal shape, appendages, orientation, or movement. If the needed details are missing, report a broader group or leave it unidentified rather than claiming a species.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat information should I record with an underwater observation?
Keep the source image or video and timestamp, depth, coordinates or locality, ocean or region, and whether the subject is on the seafloor or in open water. Preserve environmental information such as temperature, salinity, or oxygen when available. Record unknown fields as unknown instead of guessing.
Is NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide exhaustive?
No. Its images come from particular Okeanos Explorer expeditions and the taxa represented in those observations. A missing match does not show that an animal is new, absent from a region, or impossible to identify.
How can I tell the animal’s size from an ROV image?
Apparent size alone is unreliable because distance and camera geometry affect how large an animal looks. NOAA describes paired red ROV laser dots spaced 10 centimeters apart as a scale reference, but use them only when the dots and animal have a suitable imaging relationship. Otherwise, leave size unmeasured or describe it cautiously.
Does NOAA’s AI work mean AI can identify every deep-sea animal?
No. NOAA says the imagery is being used to train AI for automated detection. Detection is not proof of reliable species-level identification, and it does not establish that AI can identify every animal.

The Bottom Line
Preserve the original image and its context, describe what is visible, and compare several relevant records rather than naming an animal from resemblance alone. NOAA’s guide is a useful, traceable starting point for represented benthic observations—not an exhaustive checklist or a substitute for expert review. When diagnostic features are missing, a broader identification or “unidentified” is the more defensible result.
