To identify a tradeable crypto arbitrage opportunity, compare synchronized, executable bid and ask prices for the same asset and equivalent market on two venues, then subtract every cost and risk that applies to your order size. A displayed price gap is only a candidate: fees, slippage, transfer delays, quote-currency differences, hedging, and custody constraints can eliminate the profit before both sides fill.
The practical test is simple to state and difficult to execute: can you buy the required amount at the available ask on one venue and sell it at the available bid on another, within the same time window, for a positive net result after costs?

What cross-exchange crypto arbitrage actually is
Cross-exchange arbitrage is the attempt to exploit a temporary price difference for the same crypto asset on separate trading venues. The usual spot route is to buy on the cheaper venue and sell on the more expensive one. If the two orders execute as planned, the difference between the sale proceeds and purchase cost is the gross spread.

Prices shown on websites are often last-trade values, may be timestamped differently, and may represent only a tiny amount at the top of an order book. You need to establish all of the following before treating a gap as actionable:
- The asset, contract type, and quote currencies are genuinely comparable.
- Both venues have current bids, asks, and sufficient depth for your intended size.
- The data is timestamped closely enough that the prices refer to the same market state.
- The orders can be placed, filled, and settled under your account, geographic, and compliance constraints.
- The spread remains positive after trading fees, market impact, transfers or hedges, foreign-exchange effects, and operational risk.
A persistent discrepancy is not automatically free money. It can reflect different local rules, participant populations, exchange operations, or restrictions on moving capital between markets.
Start with comparable markets, not ticker symbols
Match the instrument
Compare spot with spot unless you are deliberately modeling a derivatives basis or another strategy. A spot BTC market, a perpetual swap, and a dated futures contract have different funding, margin, liquidation, and settlement mechanics. Their prices are not interchangeable for a simple cross-exchange spot calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfirm the asset’s contract and network details as well. A venue may list a token under the same symbol while supporting a different wrapped version, deposit network, or withdrawal asset. A price comparison is meaningless if the asset cannot be transferred or redeemed along the route you intend to use.
Match the quote currency
BTC/USDT and BTC/USD are not automatically the same price. A stablecoin is intended to track a fiat currency, but its market value can move above or below that target. A 2019 SEC-filed Bitwise document cautioned that data aggregators may assume a stablecoin is exactly $1 when converting displayed prices, even though its value can fluctuate.
For a quote-currency conversion, use the contemporaneous exchange rate that your account can actually obtain, and include conversion spread and fees. If you cannot reliably value both sides in one numeraire, label the apparent gap as a currency discrepancy rather than an arbitrage spread.
Check market status and account eligibility
Before calculating, verify that both markets accept your order type, jurisdiction, identity level, and account balance. A quote from a market that is paused, restricted to certain residents, or unavailable to your account is not executable for you. Withdrawal availability, network maintenance, minimum amounts, and destination-address rules matter just as much as the headline price.

Record more than the last trade
For each venue, capture the best bid, best ask, quantity available at each level, recent trades, and a precise timestamp. A benchmark filing describes continuous trade data with the pair, price, volume, and accurate timestamp as criteria for exchanges it monitors. The point is not the filing’s particular benchmark; it is the discipline of comparing observations from the same moment.
Last-trade prices are especially dangerous. A single small trade can leave a stale price on one screen while the other venue has already moved. For a route that buys on venue A and sells on venue B, the relevant starting prices are:

- Buy side: the ask levels on A that your purchase will consume.
- Sell side: the bid levels on B that can absorb your sale.
Never use the bid to estimate a purchase or the ask to estimate a sale. That reverses the direction of the spread.
Synchronize clocks and observations
Store the exchange timestamp and the time your system received each update. A feed that arrives seconds late can produce a visually attractive but already vanished gap. If the venues publish different timestamp conventions, normalize them and retain the original values for auditing.
For manual checks, refresh both order books immediately before submitting orders. For automated screening, reject observations older than your chosen age limit and flag periods when one feed stops updating. A missing update should be treated as unknown, not as a stable price.
Model the order book at your intended size
Suppose you want to trade 2 BTC. If the first 0.1 BTC is offered at one ask and the remaining amount is offered at progressively higher levels, your average purchase price is the volume-weighted price across all consumed levels. The same calculation applies to the bids receiving your sale.
Calculate a volume-weighted executable price for each leg:
buy_cost = sum(price_level × quantity_filled) on the ask side of venue A
sale_proceeds = sum(price_level × quantity_filled) on the bid side of venue B
Then compare those totals for the same asset quantity. A top-of-book spread that disappears when you include the second or third level is not large enough for that order size.

Calculate gross and net spread
Gross spread
For a simple spot route, the gross result before costs is:
gross result = sale proceeds on B − purchase cost on A
Express it as a percentage of the purchase cost when comparing opportunities:
gross spread % = (sale proceeds − purchase cost) ÷ purchase cost × 100
Use the volume-weighted execution prices, not a single displayed quote. If the quote currencies differ, convert both sides first using rates available to your account.

Trading fees and market impact
Apply the actual fee tier for each account and order type. Maker and taker fees can differ, and a limit order that does not fill is not equivalent to an immediate execution. Include the price movement caused by consuming the book as market impact, even if the venue calls it slippage rather than a fee.
Transfers, hedges, and financing
If you buy on A and plan to transfer the asset to B before selling, include the withdrawal fee, deposit or network cost, minimum amount, and expected processing time. The transfer may complete after the spread has disappeared. You may instead pre-position assets and cash on both venues, but then you must account for the cost of holding idle balances and the risk that one venue is inaccessible.
If you sell before an asset arrives and use a hedge, include the hedge’s trading fee, funding or borrowing cost, liquidation exposure, and the cost of closing it. A 2019 SEC filing identifies withdrawal processing time, hedging costs, and foreign-exchange movement as structural cross-exchange frictions; it does not provide current exchange-specific rates.
Foreign-exchange conversion
When one side is quoted in a fiat currency or a stablecoin with a different market value, include the conversion rate, spread, and settlement delay. Small conversion costs can consume a narrow crypto price gap. Record whether the rate is executable for your amount rather than relying on a reference rate.
Net result formula
A useful screening equation is:
net result = sale proceeds − purchase cost − trading fees − market impact − transfer costs − hedge or financing costs − FX costs
For a conservative screen, also assign a monetary allowance for failed fills, partial fills, delayed settlement, and emergency unwinding. Keep that allowance separate from the observable spread so you can see which assumption makes a route viable.

- Define the route and size. Write down the exact asset, instrument, quote currencies, buy venue, sell venue, and quantity. Decide whether the asset will be transferred or whether balances will be pre-positioned.
- Validate account access. Confirm that both accounts can trade the pair, deposit and withdraw the required asset, and operate in your jurisdiction. Check limits, maintenance notices, minimum order sizes, and available balances.
- Collect synchronized data. Capture bids, asks, depth, recent trades, and timestamps from both venues. Reject stale or incomplete observations.
- Normalize currencies and units. Convert quote currencies using executable rates. Confirm that token decimals, contract addresses, and network routes match.
- Simulate fills through the book. Consume asks on the buy venue and bids on the sell venue until the intended quantity is filled. Calculate volume-weighted prices and identify the residual quantity if the book is too thin.
- Apply every known cost. Deduct both trading fees, slippage, withdrawal and network costs, conversion costs, and any hedge or financing expense. Use the account’s current fee tier rather than a generic industry estimate.
- Test timing. Estimate how long each order takes to submit, match, confirm, transfer, and settle. Model what happens if the spread narrows during that interval.
- Stress the route. Recalculate with a wider spread, less depth, a delayed transfer, a partial fill, and an unfavorable currency move. If the result turns negative under a small deterioration, it is fragile.
- Check data quality and venue conditions. Investigate unusual volume, mechanically repeating trades, unreliable timestamps, or a gap isolated to one venue before committing funds.
- Set an execution and abort rule. Specify the minimum net spread, maximum slippage, maximum age of data, and action if one leg fails. Do not improvise a larger position to rescue a losing trade.
How to screen data quality and false opportunities
Volume is evidence, not proof
Reported volume can be inflated, non-economic, or disconnected from the liquidity available to your order. A 2019 Bitwise Index Services analysis of more than 80 exchanges estimated approximately $273 million in real daily Bitcoin spot volume as of March 8, 2019, compared with approximately $6 billion in widely reported volume at that time. The filing described nearly 95% of previously reported volume as fake or non-economic according to that analysis. Those are historical estimates, not current market statistics and not findings by the SEC.
The lesson is to verify what can actually be traded. A venue showing large volume but little executable depth should receive a low confidence rating.
Use order-book and trade-pattern checks
The same historical filing describes collecting order-book and recent-trade data four times each second and examining trade-size distributions, volume behavior relative to other exchanges, and spread patterns. You can use the concepts without treating them as a present-day safety certification:
- Look for natural variation in trade sizes rather than repetitive, mechanically identical prints.
- Compare volume changes with broad market activity; an isolated surge deserves investigation.
- Flag spreads that are unusually wide, perfectly constant, or disconnected from related markets.
- Check whether displayed depth remains after small test-size calculations; disappearing liquidity is a warning.
- Track feed gaps, duplicated messages, and timestamp reversals.
These checks can identify unreliable data, but they cannot prove that an exchange is solvent, secure, or suitable for your funds.

Choose between transfer-based and pre-positioned execution
Transfer after buying
In a transfer-based route, you buy the asset on the cheaper venue, withdraw it, wait for the destination to credit it, and sell there. This uses less capital on the expensive venue but exposes the trade to network congestion, withdrawal review, maintenance, address errors, and price movement during transit. The opportunity can close before the sale is possible.
Pre-position balances
With pre-positioning, you hold the asset on the venue where you intend to sell and the quote currency on the venue where you intend to buy. Both legs can be submitted nearly simultaneously, reducing transfer latency. The trade-off is that funds remain on multiple platforms and may be unavailable during an outage, withdrawal freeze, account review, hack, or exchange default.
Rebalancing is a separate operation. After a series of trades, one venue may hold most of the asset and the other most of the cash. Schedule rebalancing only after checking current transfer costs, limits, and the risk that moving funds will take longer than the original trade.

There is no universal weighting or minimum spread that works for every trader. Your threshold depends on size, fee tier, transfer method, capital cost, and tolerance for execution failure.
Why price gaps persist
Temporary gaps can arise when news moves one market first, liquidity is uneven, or traders submit orders at different speeds. Persistent gaps often have structural explanations: local regulation, exchange operating constraints, different participant composition, restricted capital flows, or a quote currency trading away from its intended value.
In written input dated May 8, 2025, SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce warned in the context of evaluating an exchange-traded product: “Conversely, prolonged or persistent price discrepancies may signal market fragmentation or capital flow constraints, which could impact the effectiveness of an ETP’s arbitrage program and the reliability of its pricing.” This is a policy observation, not individualized trading advice. It is a reminder that a gap lasting longer than expected may indicate that the route is difficult to close, not that the market has overlooked a guaranteed return.
Common failure modes and what to do
The gap vanishes when you place the order
Likely causes include stale data, a fast market, or insufficient depth. Require fresher timestamps, reduce size, and use a pre-trade book simulation. Do not chase the price by widening both orders without a defined limit.
Only one leg fills
Decide in advance whether to cancel, hedge, or complete the second leg at a capped price. Record partial-fill rules in the execution system. An unhedged asset position can turn a small expected spread into a directional bet.
Best Value
The transfer is pending
Check the network, withdrawal status, destination credit requirements, and transaction identifier. If the strategy relies on a transfer completing within a certain time, stop opening new positions until the delay is understood. A pending transfer is an operational incident, not a reason to assume the original spread still exists.
The stablecoin price is responsible for the difference
Recalculate both markets in a common fiat or crypto numeraire using executable conversion rates. If the difference disappears after that adjustment, it was quote-currency exposure rather than asset arbitrage.
Displayed volume cannot be traded
Lower the confidence rating and test smaller quantities. Persistent mismatches between reported volume and executable depth suggest unreliable data or non-economic activity. Do not infer safety from a volume ranking.
Withdrawals or access are restricted
Remove that venue from the route until the restriction is resolved and independently verified. A nominal spread cannot compensate for an inability to settle or recover funds.
Build a monitoring and record-keeping process
A spreadsheet can support occasional manual checks; a larger process needs a market-data collector, normalization layer, cost calculator, alerting, and an execution log. Regardless of tooling, preserve the inputs that led to each decision:
- Venue, pair, instrument, and quote currency.
- Bid and ask levels with quantities, not just the top price.
- Exchange and receipt timestamps.
- Account fee tier and order type.
- Conversion, withdrawal, network, hedge, and financing assumptions.
- Expected fill, actual fill, partial-fill events, and final settlement.
- Reason for rejecting an opportunity or aborting execution.
Review rejected alerts. If most are rejected for stale data, improve feed handling; if most fail on transfer time, pre-positioning or a different route may be the binding constraint. Keep a separate risk register for outages, withdrawal freezes, and counterparty exposure rather than burying those issues in a percentage-spread column.
What the evidence can and cannot tell you
Historical SEC-filed material is useful for understanding why data quality, depth, latency, and capital movement matter. It does not establish current fees, withdrawal status, geographic eligibility, or a live profitable opportunity on any particular venue. A separate SEC filing reports constituent exchanges and trading-volume shares for a HYPE-USD benchmark as of March 26, 2026; those figures are specific to that asset, benchmark, and date and should not be treated as a universal exchange liquidity ranking.
Before acting on any live signal, verify the exact pair, current fee schedule, order-book depth, withdrawal route and status, account permissions, and applicable rules directly with the venues involved. Treat every alert as an estimate that must survive an executable-fill and settlement check.
A concise pre-trade checklist
- Same asset, contract, network, and market type?
- Quote currencies normalized, including stablecoin deviations?
- Bids, asks, depth, trades, and timestamps current?
- Volume-weighted fills calculated for the full intended size?
- Both trading fees and market impact deducted?
- Transfer, network, hedge, financing, and FX costs included?
- Funds and withdrawals available under your account and jurisdiction?
- Latency, partial fills, and one-leg failure stress-tested?
- Custody and counterparty exposure acceptable for the balance held?
- Minimum net-spread and abort rules written before execution?
The Bottom Line
A credible cross-exchange arbitrage opportunity is a synchronized, executable, net-positive route—not a difference between two last-trade screens. Compare order-book depth, normalize quote currencies, subtract every cost, verify that funds can move or are safely pre-positioned, and reject signals that fail data-quality or settlement tests.
