One clue may narrow the possibilities, but a fragment, isolated tooth, or footprint often cannot establish an exact species. And not every prehistoric reptile was a dinosaur: pterosaurs, for example, were a separate group.
Start by deciding what kind of evidence you have
Fossils can preserve an animal’s body or evidence of its activity. That distinction matters because each type supports different conclusions.

- Body fossils include bones, teeth, armor, and some impressions of soft tissue.
- Trace fossils record activity rather than body parts. Footprints and coprolites (fossilized waste) are examples. The National Park Service describes dinosaur trace fossils as “records of the activity of a living dinosaur.”
- Eggs are a less straightforward case: they preserve evidence of reproduction, but an egg-shaped rock is not necessarily an egg.
A fossil’s color or size alone does not identify it. Mineralization, breakage, and the surrounding rock can all affect how a specimen looks.
Use a careful identification sequence
- Record the find’s context. Note where it was found and the geological setting, if known. Location can help narrow possibilities, but it is not proof of identity.
- Classify the evidence. Ask whether the object appears to be a body fossil, a trace, or a rock feature such as a concretion.
- Document it before handling. Photograph it in place and from several angles, with a scale nearby. Note visible details such as surface texture, symmetry, joint surfaces, tooth shape, or toe impressions. These observations are useful records, not a validated diagnostic test.
- Compare preserved anatomy. Use a reputable museum reference and compare more than one character where possible. An American Museum of Natural History teaching activity shows how selected bone features can support evidence-based classification; a single bone may narrow the possibilities to a group or branches of the dinosaur family tree rather than a species.
- Check for look-alikes. In particular, distinguish dinosaurs from pterosaurs, which were flying reptiles but not dinosaurs.
- State the narrowest identification the evidence supports. If key features are missing, retain the uncertainty rather than assigning a species.
What common dinosaur fossils can—and cannot—tell you
Bone fragments
Dinosaur bones are mineralized fossils, and fossil remains are often incomplete. A fragment may preserve useful anatomical details, but color and size are not enough to identify it. Even large bones can be fragile or fractured, so an apparent solid surface does not guarantee that a specimen is safe to move.

Teeth
Tooth shape can offer clues about diet and broad animal groups, but it is not an automatic species label. The American Museum of Natural History describes many theropod teeth as pointed, slightly backward-curving, and serrated. Plant-eating dinosaurs had varied teeth: some had ridged cutting surfaces, some broad grinding surfaces, and others pencil-like teeth suited to raking leaves. These are broad patterns, not a standalone identification rule.
Footprints and trackways
A footprint is a trace fossil. Its shape and its position within a trackway can preserve evidence about locomotion or behavior, but usually do not identify the maker’s exact species. The Natural History Museum cautions: “Without bones nearby, we can’t be certain what species made these fossilised footprints.”

Egg-like objects
Concretions—mineral deposits that form rounded shapes in rock—can be mistaken for dinosaur eggs. Genuine fossil eggs may also be squashed or distorted, and fragments may be more likely to survive than an intact egg. Embryo remains that could link an egg to a particular dinosaur are rare, so an egg’s shape alone cannot establish its maker.
Do not mistake a pterosaur for a dinosaur
Pterosaurs were flying reptiles and close relatives of dinosaurs, but they were not dinosaurs. One visible distinction is the elongated finger that supported a pterosaur’s wing membrane. A museum comparison also notes a difference in the hip socket: bone forms the pterosaur socket, while dinosaurs have an open hole. These features can help when they are preserved, but a fragment may not retain enough anatomy to make the comparison.

Pterosaur bones are fragile and are often preserved only as fragments, which makes confident identification harder. Other prehistoric reptiles, including marine reptiles, also should not be labeled dinosaurs merely because they lived in the same broad prehistoric world. The features described here are not a complete identification key for those groups.

Stop at a broad identification—such as “possible fossil bone” or “trace fossil”—when diagnostic features are missing or the evidence points in more than one direction. A museum identification service or qualified paleontologist is a better next step for an unusual or consequential find than a species-level guess.

Do not pry an unknown fossil out of rock, scrub it, or try to remove the surrounding matrix. Fossils may be fragile or fractured internally; specialists carefully remove them with surrounding rock and protective field jackets. Collecting rules vary by location, so check applicable local requirements before collecting or moving material.
