How to Identify and Remove Malware from a Device

Symptoms like pop-ups and redirects can be clues, not proof. Use the trusted cleanup steps for your device, then secure your browser and accounts.

Pop-ups, browser redirects, unexplained slowdowns, unusual battery or data use, and unexpected account activity can be clues to malware—but none proves a device is infected. Don’t click a warning’s phone number, payment button, or download link. Instead, use the device’s built-in security tools or the platform maker’s documented instructions, then check your accounts and update the device.

How to tell whether a device might have malware

Look for changes you can’t explain: persistent pop-ups, unfamiliar browser settings or extensions, redirects to unexpected sites, a sudden performance change, unusual battery or data use, or account messages you didn’t trigger. These are reasons to investigate, not a diagnosis. Similar computer symptoms can have non-malware causes, and an unexpected account message may point to a compromised account rather than an infected device.

Be especially cautious with alerts that appear inside a web page. A page telling you to call a number, pay to remove a virus, or install its “security” software is not a trusted diagnostic tool. Close the page without following its instructions and start an investigation through the device’s Settings or built-in security interface.

Start with the cleanup method for your device

Use a method that matches both your device and the warning you received. These platform workflows are not a product ranking: Windows provides Defender scans, Android guidance centers on Play Protect and app removal, and Apple’s instructions address specific alerts or flagged downloads.

Windows PC Run a scan in Windows Security with Microsoft Defender; consider an offline scan for a more thorough check. You suspect malware or want to check whether a previous infection appears to be cleaned.
Android phone or tablet Use Google Play Protect, check updates, and remove apps you don’t trust or recognize. For suspected harmful apps, including apps installed from outside Google Play.
iPhone or iPad Delete the app named in Apple’s malware alert. Only when iOS or iPadOS presents Apple’s alert that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened.
Mac Move the item macOS identified as malware to Trash, then empty Trash. When macOS reports that a downloaded item is malware.

Remove malware or unwanted software on Windows

Run a Microsoft Defender scan

  1. Open Windows Security and choose Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Quick scan to check common locations. For more choices, open Scan options; choose a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan as appropriate. Microsoft identifies the offline scan as its most complete scan option.
  3. If Defender detects a threat, follow its quarantine or removal action. Defender may block and try to remove malware, but it can sometimes require you to quarantine or remove a file or process.

Microsoft’s scan instructions are at Stay protected with Windows Security. Available labels can vary with the Windows version.

For persistent unwanted software

  • Uninstall software you don’t need or trust.
  • Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then run a full scan; consider Defender Offline if the problem persists.
  • Don’t run two real-time antivirus products at once. Microsoft warns that multiple programs can reduce performance or destabilize a PC. If you remove unwanted security software, keep protection enabled.

See Microsoft’s Microsoft Defender Offline and unwanted software removal guidance for those steps.

Check an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then open Play Protect. Turn on app scanning. If you install apps from outside Google Play, check that Play Protect’s harmful-app detection is enabled.
  2. Install available Android, security, and Google Play system updates from the device’s Settings.
  3. Uninstall apps you don’t trust or recognize.
  4. Review your Google Account’s Security Checkup.

Menu names and locations can vary by Android version and device maker. Google’s Android guidance for removing malware or unsafe software describes these steps. If warning signs remain after cleanup, Google says a reset or help from the device maker may be needed.

Respond to Apple’s malware warnings

iPhone or iPad: follow the specific app alert

If iOS or iPadOS says a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, delete that app from the alert or from the Home Screen or App Library. Apple warns that re-enabling the app could harm the device or compromise privacy. This instruction applies to that specific alert; it is not a universal iPhone malware-diagnosis procedure. See Apple’s guidance for an iPhone or iPad malware alert.

Mac: remove the flagged download

If macOS reports that an item downloaded from the internet is malware, put that item in Trash and empty Trash. Don’t open downloads from sources you can’t verify. Apple’s instructions are at Protect your Mac from malware.

Secure browsers and accounts after cleanup

  • Install available operating-system security updates.
  • Remove browser extensions you don’t recognize or trust. If unwanted browser changes continue, restore the browser’s settings. Google outlines these steps in its computer guidance for removing malware or unsafe software.
  • Review the security page for accounts used on the device. Google account holders can use Security Checkup.
  • If you may have entered a password on a compromised device or site, change it from a device you believe is clean. Enable multi-factor authentication where available.

If the device is actively sending messages or showing ongoing suspicious activity, avoid sensitive logins on it until you have run the trusted cleanup steps and checked account security.

What to do if the warning signs continue

A scan or app deletion does not guarantee that every infection is gone. If suspicious behavior remains after the documented platform steps, consult the device maker’s support guidance or consider a factory reset. Before resetting, back up only important personal files; don’t restore suspicious apps or executable files from a backup. Google specifically recommends considering a reset or manufacturer help when Android warning signs persist.

For unresolved malware concerns, CISA advises seeking help from a security expert or a legitimate technical-support provider. Avoid anyone who contacts you unexpectedly and demands payment or remote access to “fix” a virus.
