There is no reliable visual clue, voice test, writing-style checklist, or detector score that proves a piece of media was made by AI. Treat identification as evidence gathering: preserve the original, check available provenance, assess any watermark or detector result within its limits, and corroborate the content and its source before drawing conclusions.
What “AI-generated” means—and what identification can establish
NIST defines synthetic content as “information, such as images, videos, audio clips, and text, that has been significantly altered or generated by algorithms, including by AI.” In practice, media may be fully generated, partly generated, or edited with AI. A provenance record may describe some of that history, but a single clue rarely establishes how an entire item was made.

It also helps to separate two questions: How was this content created? and Is what it depicts or says true? An authentic recording can be presented out of context; synthetic text can contain accurate information. Origin evidence is not a truth test.
Start with the original and follow the evidence
- Preserve the item and its source. Save the original file or link when possible, along with where and when you encountered it. Screenshots, re-uploads, cropping, transcoding, compression, denoising, and copying text can remove metadata or weaken watermarks. If you only have a transformed copy, treat missing signals as especially inconclusive.
- Check for provenance. Look for Content Credentials or another origin and edit record. Note what the record says, which content and edits it covers, whether its signature validates, and who signed it. A technically valid signature establishes that a recorded claim has not been altered since signing; it does not prove the signer is right or trustworthy.
- Interpret watermarks and detectors according to their method. A watermark check is meaningful only if the content and detector support the same scheme. A classifier result applies only within the kinds of media, generators, languages, transformations, and thresholds on which it was evaluated. Neither is a universal authorship test.
- Corroborate the claim independently. Find the earliest available source, compare independent accounts, and consult primary records where relevant. Check whether a clip is complete and whether its caption or surrounding context changes its meaning.
- Describe the evidence precisely. Say “the available provenance indicates,” “one detector flagged the file,” or “we could not verify the origin,” rather than declaring something AI-made on the strength of one clue. Avoid public accusations or consequential decisions without stronger corroboration.
What the main identification methods can—and cannot—tell you
| Evidence type | What it can indicate | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance or Content Credentials | A recorded source, creation claim, or editing history, if the information is present and the record validates. | Coverage is incomplete; the record may not capture the full history, and a credible signature does not make every claim or the content itself truthful. |
| Watermark | A signal associated with a particular watermarking method, when a compatible detector finds it. | Detection depends on the scheme and may be weakened by transformations or adversarial editing. A result does not establish truth or prove every aspect of authorship. |
| Automated classifier | A model’s assessment of whether the input resembles material in its evaluation setting. | Results can include false positives and false negatives, and may not transfer to unfamiliar models, formats, languages, genres, or edits. |
| Human or forensic review | Contextual assessment of the file, source, and surrounding evidence. | Quality depends on the evidence available and the reviewer’s expertise; consequential cases may require qualified forensic analysis. |
NIST groups transparency approaches into provenance tracking, labeling such as watermarking, and synthetic-content detection. Its 2024 report, updated April 8, 2026, cautions that none is a complete solution by itself; usefulness depends on implementation and context. A missing credential or watermark therefore means only that no such signal was found—not that the content was made by a person.

How to assess an image
Begin with the original image file, then inspect any available Content Credentials or relevant metadata. If a credential is present, check its validation state, signer, creation information, and recorded edits. NIST notes that image provenance techniques are comparatively developed, but adoption and coverage are still incomplete.
Visual irregularities—such as inconsistent reflections, anatomy, rendered text, or repeated textures—can justify closer checking, but they are not proof. Such artifacts can fade as image generators improve, occur in ordinary photography or post-processing, or be introduced by compression and editing. A visual impression is a prompt to seek better evidence, not a verdict.

NIST’s 2025 image-discriminator evaluation plan defines a specific task: deciding whether a target image was generated by a generative-AI system. It describes a system evaluation, not a blanket accuracy guarantee for every detector, image, or real-world situation.
How to assess audio and a claimed speaker
Check for an intact provenance record or a recognized watermark only where the format and relevant tool support it. Then compare the claimed speaker or source with independent, trusted recordings and contextual evidence. A convincing voice alone is weak evidence of identity, and a detector result is only one clue.

Excerpting, denoising, compression, or reposting can affect signals, while a short clip without context can be difficult to authenticate. The NIST material considered here includes audio among the relevant synthetic-content modalities, but does not establish a universal consumer test or a current general accuracy figure for synthetic-audio detection. In a high-stakes case, preserve the file and seek qualified forensic analysis rather than relying on a web detector alone.
How to assess text
There is no dependable style checklist that proves a passage was AI-generated. Predictable wording, polished grammar, repeated structure, and generic phrasing also occur in human writing. Watermark methods can be weakened by editing or paraphrasing; classifiers may fail to generalize to unfamiliar generators and can be affected by language, genre, or length.

NIST’s 2024 text-to-text pilot overview, published June 25, 2025, evaluated systems on curated human- and machine-generated summaries using metrics including AUC and Brier scores. Performance varied substantially: some generators deceived most tested discriminators, while some discriminators detected outputs from almost all tested generators. Those findings describe that pilot’s task and dataset—not a portable accuracy rate for arbitrary writing, languages, detectors, or current models.

When authorship matters, verify factual claims and seek drafts or source records where appropriate. A detector score should not be sole evidence in grading, hiring, discipline, or a public accusation. NIST warns that false positives can wrongly label human work as AI-generated and cause reputational or other harm.

What Content Credentials mean
C2PA describes Content Credentials as tamper-evident, machine-readable labels that help audiences discern when media has been created or modified by generative AI. Its AI/ML specification, version 2.2, describes credentials that can carry claims about origin or modification and information such as a model credential, inputs, timestamps, and prompt. The useful question is what the particular credential records and who signed it—not simply whether a badge is present.
A credential is provenance evidence within the recorded chain, not a universal AI detector, a guarantee of trustworthy content, or proof that a claim is true. A signer may be mistaken, the record may omit parts of the history, and authentic media may still be misleadingly framed. C2PA’s July 2026 resources describe implementation and deployment guidance; the description of the standard is not, by itself, independent proof of effectiveness in every use.
How to judge a detector or provenance tool
Before relying on a result, ask what evidence the tool uses and what its evaluation actually covers. NIST’s text-to-text program describes measures including AUC, equal error rate, and true-positive rate at a chosen false-positive rate; these measures matter because lowering one kind of error can affect another.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Coverage: Does it support this modality, file format, language, generator family, and type of editing?
- Evidence type: Is it checking a signed provenance record, an embedded watermark, a classifier pattern, or the file through human forensic review?
- Validation and signer: Can a credential be cryptographically validated, and can you assess who made the recorded claim?
- Error profile: What false-positive and false-negative rates were measured, on which data, and at what threshold?
- Robustness: Has the method been evaluated after routine export, cropping, compression, reposting, or—in text—paraphrasing?
- Decision stakes: The more harm a mistaken call could cause, the stronger the case for independent corroboration and qualified review.
NIST’s evaluations use measures such as AUC and error rates because no score has meaning apart from its test setup and error tradeoffs. Do not convert an uncalibrated score into a categorical claim.
